Since When Has The 'Orange' Look Become Fashionable?

Do you know the look I mean? It's the 'fake tan' look where all young women look the same and insist on making their whole bodies it seems take on an orange hue. This is white women by the way. I guess black women look on and smile to themselves as they are saving a fortune on fake tan (and I don't mean to be catty when I say that), I think you all know what I mean.
When did it all start, this 'fake tan' lark? In my day we would much rather get a proper tan than douse ourselves in all that crap. Why do they all have to look the same? What has happened to individuality? What's wrong with looking pale and interesting?
I don't know if Marilyn Monroe is buried anywhere but if she is I bet she's spinning in her grave.

I'm not into tanning. I'm very light skinned and don't tan. I burn (in 20min) and peel, so I'm not impressed with anybody's tan. But to walk around like a bunch of orange hued creatures is laughable. I really think they don't realize how they look. But then that's just our opinion. As far as individuality goes, there isn't any. A few years back (maybe more than a few) there was a trend with the kids of wearing mismatched socks. A reporter was asking a high school girl if she didn't feel odd wearing socks that didn't match. She exclaimed "It's my right as an individual to be different. Besides, all the other kids are doing it". So much for individuality. I remember when fake tan lotion first came out. I think it was the early 60's. I was a teenager and all my friends had tans. I never did. So I bought this stuff and, along with a friend, we applied it. Good thing I only tried it on my arm. It ran a little and caused streaking. And it was orange. Horrible. Then It wouldn't come off for a few days.

That really made me laugh, the comment about the socks. They've not changed over the years have they? Follow the crowd lol.
I don't like the false eyelashes either and Mum told me the new trend now is having really thick eyebrows painted black.
Lovely! Er..not!

Yeh, you see it a lot now. I mean, my eyebrows are slightly on the bushy side as I take after my Dad but I tend to just tidy them up a bit (if I can be ar*ed) lol. I really couldn't make them more prominent by painting them black; now that would be stupid.
Haha!

Katie Price is another one. Oh, and all the 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestants, even the men.
I would like to see Roger Federer compete in that so he can say, "No, I'm NOT having a fake tan, I'm nice and tanned naturally with all the tennis I play and no, I'm NOT waxing my chest, thank you very much!"
I can't understand why he doesn't get whistled at at Wimbledon when he takes his top off. What would YOU choose? A night with Rog or Andy Murray?
Mmm, it's a toughie!!

I'd probably describe myself as fashion UNconscious-but I thought people by now had wised up to how tacky the fake tan look was? (especially in those shades of dayglo Oompa Loompa !) Plus,The effect is kinda spoiled when you see the ruboff on the clothing they're also trying to impress with..

I suppose if they'd happen to hook up with someone who's wearing the exact same shade,it's all good...

Then they'd blend into one, especially if they had beige sheets.

I think the orange fake tans look so ridiculous. I see celebrities doing this and I think with as much as they have to look amazing why would they ever let themselves look like that. You would have to pay me a lot of money to walk around like that. What gets me is that these people think they look good lol.

Oooh, that was sooo annoying. I'd just written my response to your comment and the bloody thing went "poof" lol. Grr.
I shall have to copy this and paste it if it goes off again.
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes.
If I were slim I'd want to look like you my friend. Simply because you have a more natural look - even with make-up - than the orange people. And I'm really pleased you haven't gone down that route because I don't think ANYONE suits it. Even Simon Cowell is orange now. What's he playing at? And Louis Walsh has paid thousands to get his hair sorted out. Not everyone has that kind of money and the ones that try to copy him won't have the cash and resort to a comb-over wig instead.
It's such a shame how vain some people are becoming.
I remember the tinted moisturiser. Do you? If you overdid it, the pumpkin look would ensue. So I gave up in the end. Mind you, it's gone the OTHER way now, hasn't it?
The more orange the better. All very strange I must say.

I think the orange look is horrible. Women who go through this are throwing their money away!! I can understand wanting to get a tan but to come out looking like a blasted pumpkin is crazy! I must confess that I am one of those pale and interesting people. Very pale and don't tan what so ever. I care enough about my skin and my health to keep it that way too. Getting my share of Vitamin D from the sun is one thing but getting skin cancer is quite another!

Yes, I believe ricketts is on the increase for youngsters because they are spending way too much time indoors (blame the gaming industry for that one) so Kelloggs, as an example, are putting more Vitamin D in their cereals!

Is it possible that they are trying to stay healthy by staying out of the sun?
Many people dislike the pale look. I think it only suits woman who have beautiful alabaster skin which is soft and smooth with no blemishes.
It's just another form of make-up I guess. Some people are good at applying it and some are not.

Well, they have been known to wear it during the daytime so I think it's a fashion thing. Someone, somewhere in a glossy magazine has told them it's cool to look like an orange. That's my guess anyway.

well, the black ladies are spending that money on straightening or corn rowing their hair...
Well, back in the day we didn't know the link between the Sun and skin cancer - oh, the doctors probably did, but us youngsters didn't. I never really got into the whole tanning thing, probably because I flash burn!

I believe the chemicals in fake tan products aren't very good for the skin. Over time there will probably be as many incidents of skin cancer than there are now..say, in 10 years time.

It is funny that people with fair skin are trying hard to color their bodies while their counterparts in the east are spending tons of on whitening or bleaching creams to whiten their skins. In our culture we have always preferred the fair skinned. The prettiest girls are always the fairest and got hooked up for marriage faster than the dark girls.

Why can't we be satisfied with what we've been born with? It's all very odd.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being pale. lol Well, i think its sily that darker skinned people are told how beautiful they are and they should be proud of their dark complexion but us light folk are ugly and we need to get out there and burn our skin and catch some cancer so we look acceptable to everyone else standards. I absolutey refuse to go out looking like oompa loompa or even getting a real tan for that matter. Its my way of giving those people the middle finger. This is the skin God gave me. I will keep it how it is.

I think that would probsbly because they wanted to look way different from the skin color thst they have which they might think is getting to be boring, well maybe for them. while these fair skinned women eant sone color on their skin , some dark-skinned Asian women get out of their way to make themselves look almost paper-white!hahaha! Don't we just get satisfied with what skin color we have?

They get their bodies take on an orange hue, what for? Whether for health or beauty. They say that those who expose their skin to the sun too much are apt to suffer from skin cancer. As for the fact that the doctor advise parents to take the children out to get as much sun as possible,it is because it can prevent children from calcium deficiency. When it comes to beauty, different people, different views.Over here most people regard fair complexion as beauty. Many people put on sunscreen lest they should be suntanned if they go out in summer.

The fake tan I speak of is a lotion that is usually sprayed all over the body, usually in a salon of some kind. We're still advised not to stay out in the sun without sunscreen for too long (usually around 20 minutes) but it seems people are resorting to the lotions instead.
At least the orange thing in the sky is free.

hi Janey I have heard some doctors joke that young women with that fake orange tan look like they have yellow jaundice,
I think its looks horrid and have read that some of that stuff they use is not even healthy to put on their skins,.Some of us
just do not get a real tan so lets enjoy a different look
pale and wan with blue eyes and in my case white hair, but my
eyes are blue green so I play up my eyes with green or blue in my clothes a lot,I am also a bit anemic but I am fair and come from one parent who was fair on the clark side.

I wish you'd post a pic Hatley. I have this vision of loveliness in my head now, especially of your eyes and hair.
Aww!
I bet you're better looking than Liz Taylor, who had amazing violet eyes, apparently.
Men have ALWAYS preferred voluptuous women so it's about time they came out of the closet and strutted their stuff lol.

And you get the sun over there too. Over here they make the excuse that it's never sunny but in Oz? How odd!
I believe the chemicals in the products are just as bad as going onto one of those artificial sunbeds. Thinking about it, I reckon this is why these products have taken off. Younger women especially aren't allowed to go into tanning booths, so out comes the fake tan lotion.
Yuk!
I really couldn't be bothered.
Give me pale and interesting any day of the week...and believe me, my John is the palest guy in the known universe..but it's all natural lol.

I used to live in Asia where the view is completely opposite. Girls there were obsessed with making their skins whiter. I worked in a cosmetic company there where our no.1 product was a skin whitening cream.
And then here in the west, young people are going for the fake tan look. It just seems funny to me. And I bet to other people who've seen the other side.

It's so strange isn't it? Do stars on the Bollywood circuit do this to their skin? Is that why it's so popular?

Im so glad some one has mentioned this. I thought i was the only one thinking this. I thing it looks ridiculous. Your skin shouldn't be orange, the color isn't natural. I am a Black woman of light color and have seen women of my race even try it. My skin tone is a light almost tan color and when you put orange on top of that, well it just looks like the crayon box had a fight on your skin.
We all look different and should. I like different shades of people, Not the "Orange Stepford Wives look"

Hello there and welcome to MyLot.
You're so right; we're all different and should celebrate that fact.
I thought it odd that so many female athletes at the Olympics had make-up on. Can't see the point myself; it's all gonna run down the face once they get sweaty, otherwise they're not trying hard enough!
