How do you rationalize a speeding ticket?

cops with radar guns - ticket for over speeding

I am a very impatient person. I want everything done fast. I expect this from myself and with the people I work with. Being impatient that I am, I impose a lot of restrictions on myself. Specially when it comes to driving. Yes I might go over the speed limit a few times, but it’s always never more than 10 mph. And that I’m always extra careful driving when I have my kids with me. Two weekends ago, I finally had my first speeding ticket. $206 – ouch! I’ve been trying to rationalize why I got caught speeding. Was it bound to happen? My impatience plus the restrictions, reaching a tipping point? I didn’t have the kids with me in the car, so was it just me trying to live a little? Have you ever been caught speeding? Have you rationalized why you got caught? If so, how do you feel about speed-limit signs now? Or cops with radar guns hiding in bushes?

I wouldn't bother trying to rationalize it. Actually that statement is advice, I would probably try to justify myself for awhile first. Then when the sting of the ticket wore off a little I would shrug, admit I screwed up and move on.

Now that I have a few days after that ticket, the sting has worn off a bit. Specially today when I checked online that they did get the money order I sent to pay off the fine. I've also done the 'shrug', and slowly admitting that I screwed up, so I can move on. Thanks!

I don't think one can really rationalize it. Though I suppose that you getting caught was just a way to say "be careful, you could very well be killed next time." There are speed limits for a reason.. That being said, as you know I don't drive much. I don't have a car nor a license (though I do have my permit). I remember going down this one highway (country highway) and not even wanting to go the speed limit, it was my first time really driving and I was scared. Though a few times after that, I went FASTER then the speed limit, just wanting to get home... Yeah Yeah, I know I shouldn't have.. Would you like to know what the speed limit was? I believe ti was 55 MPH and I was going 60 MPH, or it was 60 MPH and I was going 65! I forget which, either way... I am impatient too and would most likely speed as well.

I think I could live with that rationalization: ...be careful, you could very well be killed next time. It makes paying the $206 fine not so painful. Thanks SCG!

Thankfully I have never gotten a speeding ticket. If I got one I would be really mad at myself becuse it is such a waste of money. I try to never go more then 5 miles over the speed limit. Sometimes when I am really in a rush I do go more then that. I wouldnt try to ratiomalize it though I would just say well it was my fault for speeding and pay the fine.

Yes, it was my fault for speeding and I have paid the fine. But it was exactly what I was feeling when I got caught. I was mad at myself for getting caught, and doubly mad for having to shell out $206 for a momenatary lapse in judgement. Thanks!

My rationalization is that the speed is ridiculous for the area I got one once in the morning on the way to work. The speed limit on this particular highway is very low when compared to like areas. I think it's a speed trap There is usually very little traffic on my way in..barely a soul. Maybe that is why I got his attention.

To be honest, I also think that the speed (limit) is ridiculous for the area where I was caught. It used to be just a two lane road with some areas not very well paved. And it's mostly farm land. And last year they've expanded it to 4 lanes, and paved everything. When there is only a few cars on the road, it screams SPEED! And then there is the cop hiding in the bushes. Thanks Jen!

Stop trying to rationalize. We all know you were going faster than 10 miles over the limit to get a $206 ticket, unless it was in a school zone or something equally dangerous. Being caught speeding just teaches you to be more considerate of others next time. If you're careful when the kids are in the car, you should use that same caution when alone, other people have their kids in their cars.

Thanks for the advice teamrose! It's a bit tough reading your response, but I guess this just means there's a lot of truth in what you've put in here. I'll keep that in mind.

I would be lying if I said I never speed while I drive lol. For the most part I try not to go past driving 5 mph over the limit. Sometimes I catch myself going a little more than that and I slow down when I realize I'm doing it. It just doesn't feel like I'm going that fast in my car and sometimes I speed without even knowing it. So far I haven't been caught and hopefully I won't. I should be good as long as I don't go more than 5 over lol

I hope you keep it that way! That you never get caught. Or always correct yourself if you realize that you're speeding. Believe me, it's not a pleasant feeling getting caught. Thanks!

I also used to think that when I speed, it isn't that much. I think this what has gotten me over 15 years before I got my first ticket. I guess it's just nature's way of telling me to slow down. Thanks Visdude!
