What to do about itchy fingers

Sometimes, my fingers itch. I am not sure whether it has anything to do with the weather, or maybe the material I use for washing the dishes. I normally use gloves, but a couple of days ago I was out of gloves, so I did the dishes without. One thing is for sure, it's not an allergy to any jewelry, since I usually don't wear any. (No rings, for example.) Did you ever have itchy fingers? How did you manage that? How do you stop them from itching without destroying your skin by scratching?
