I wanted to bring it to the attention of others a new technique that bill collectors are using. They call you claiming to be a lawyer/attorney and say that you will be arrested sometime that day over a debt you owe. The claim has been filed in their office. First off, there are laws regarding this type of situation. In the United States, you can not be sent to jail for being unable to pay an old bill. The first thing you should do is to do an internet search on the phone number calling you. Lately, I have had this call a lot. My husband has received the same call and my mother. When I looked up the number that is calling me, it is not even a business in the United States. That number is registered to a mobile phone in India. If I was to call that number back, the company could keep me on the phone and run up my cell phone bill.
I suspect it is the same company that I won a lawsuit against before because they harassed me over an old payday loan. However, I never saw a penny of that money because that company cleaned out their bank accounts and disappeared. I am now wiser to this scam and do not call these people back. I research to find out who is calling first. Please be careful when answering the phone calls from companies or businesses you do not know. When I was duped before, I had called the company back and the phone representative told me that I had two hours to come up with $500 or a police car would be dispatched to my residence. The representative was very argumentative so I hung up and she kept calling me back to argue with me. This woman claimed she did not care I was a heart patient that I owed the money and would have to pay it and harassed me by calling back my cell phone continuously for hours. I finally borrowed the money from my mother-in-law to get the harassment to stop. Later, I learned that this tactic is being used a lot and I filed and won a lawsuit against this company.
Remember if you are really being sued, you will receive a summons to appear in court. This will come through the mail or be served to you by a police officer. There are a lot of crooked bill collectors out there. The latest tactic is scare tactics.

People who have evil intentions are really becoming more and more common nowadays. They will try to device means in order to get what they want to the extent of others. What we can do is to be very vigilant so as not to be victimized by these kind of people.

There are a ,lot of ways these kind of people work on just to be able to get money from innocent people like you. You should always be in the look out for this. If somebody calls you up and tells you that you need to pay this and that amount coz of something that you are really not aware of, try to extract all the information from the caller- his name, contact number, the company he works with and other useful info. Then have it verified before taking any further step. Keep safe!
