I would like to ask you mylotters about staying in hostels because I'm planning to stay in one in the future. Have you tried staying there during your travels? What are your experiences there?

When I was in the junior high school I stayed at boarding school , and when I became undergraduate student I have been living at hostel. I think it depends on where you will stay , I mean not every hostel offer you the propriate facility . I have ever stayed at a poor hostel where you could take a bath with the water full filled of muds and moss. The landlord couldn't care about it. So, I suggest you to search a hostel which has a good facility including the cleaning service. How much is your budget for staying in a hostel per month?

It will just be a very short stay. I don't have a specific budget in mind but I think less than $30 per night is a reasonable amount. I've never stayed in a hostel so I'm not sure what kind of things to expect. For now, I am looking for hostels with bathrooms that can accommodate to more guests (I don't want to spend several minutes waiting in line just to take a bath every morning). It's interesting to know that hostels in your country accept local residents. I am planning to stay in Singapore and I've learned that many of their hostels are exclusively for foreigners only.

Yes, I'm from the Philippines. I am planning to go to Singapore for a short vacation during one of our holidays. I see you're friend also stayed there. I've heard Singapore is an interesting place, but the things there are quite expensive. I will check out the sites you gave me, as well as information about Five Stones Hostel. Thanks a lot!

Oh I see... then you must look forward some guest houses (in my country it is called guest house, where you could stay for about USD9 per person per night, min 4 person in a room). Well, so you are planning to stay in Singapore, rite? And you are from Philipines? My friend ever went to Singapore for attending a seminar for a week. Eventhough he didn't stay at hostel/guest house (he stayed at his friend's apartement) , he told me that he was offered some cheap hostels for backpacker from USD10 to USD 60 per person pernight. You should see www.hostelworld.com to compare all range price of hostels in Singapore. And please to go to www.tripadvisor.com to see the testimonials from the people who have stayed in there. Ps. I heard Five Stones Hostel has an affordable price for it's facilities

I have never stayed in any hostel, but my son has.Last year he had been to a distant city for further studies and there he had stayed in a hostel with his friends who had accompanied him.I came to know from him that staying at a hostel is extremely uncomfortable. They charge less than what hotels do,but they offer rubbish food and very small rooms to live in.As he told me,it is very uncomfortable to stay in a hostel.

You can't expect a kind of "hotel service" in a hostel simply because it is a hostel. It is way cheaper than hotels but rooms are smaller and there are less facilities, however you can still find clean and nice hostel to stay in, truly a value for your money but I guess you have to do your search and read reviews and all before booking.

I don't have any experience of staying in a hostel.Hyderabad, where my son specialized in dot net,is not a small city.I too had been to Hyderabad and all the hostels I visited there were not worth staying in.May be there are better hostels, but I would never like to stay there.I agree with you that hostels can't give you better facilities, but I won't like to stay there.

Hi else22, I am already expecting to get less service/facilities from the hostels since they generally cost less than a hotel. I'm on a tight budget so I am planning to stay on a hostel but I have some doubts too since I've never spent a night there. Too bad your son didn't enjoy his experience there. I guess hostels from different places vary in many ways. Thanks cafaz and else for the feedback.

I stayed in youth hostels and backpacker hostels in my younger days. I know the price for a bed in a dorm is low. Sometimes a dorm is for 4, 6, 8 or 12 people in bunk beds. The smaller dorms are usually quiet compared to a larger dorm. Some hostels have in addition have double or twin rooms available too. The youth hostel or backpackers hostel usually has a kitchen for guests to use. Self catering is a cheap way to travel. I met other travelers at the hostels I stayed at and made new friends. In South Africa a backpackers bus stopped off at the hostels. It was better than going on a local coach that drops the passengers at the fuel station. I hope that you will really enjoy staying at a youth hostel or a backpackers hostels. In my day of youth hosteling I traveled with my own sheet sleeping bag.

Sounds fun. It's like an adventure, then you'd get to meet other travelers as well and make friends with them. I do hope I would enjoy staying there.

I have stayed in hostels in Latvia and Lithuania and in my own country (Denmark) Hostels are much cheaper than hotels, and they don't offer the same facilities as hotels. In some hostels you can get a private room and a private bathroom, but in many hostels you have to share the bathroom with the other guests. If there are many guests and only one bathroom you often have to wait in line and it might be difficult to take to shower in the morning. I experienced that when I stayed in a hostel in Lithuania. In Latvia I stayed in a very small hostel. There was a nice common room where we met the other travellers and there was a kitchen when you could make your own breakfast. Some hostels have private room and dorms and some hostels only have dorms. There are dorms for women, dorms for men and mixed dorms. My husband and I stayed in a private room.

Bathrooms are one of my main concern. I have only a few days allocated for my travel so time is a critical issue. Waiting in line in bathrooms could delay our day's plans. But currently, I am looking for hostels that could accommodate a lot of guests so that I wouldn't have to wait a long line. Thanks for sharing.

No problem for staying in hostel but be careful because some students are not good. You should pay attention only on study not on girl friend.

Hi surekharathi. I'm not sure what you mean. I'm no longer a student, and I'm a girl. I am staying in a hostel because it's much cheaper than a hotel.
