I guess having TV can be both stress giver and stress reliever but which of the 2 is more pronounce?
Lately I have skip watching news at night. Though it is good to know the happenings throughout the day, the news are simply stressful and can add more garbage to your mind. See,you need to know all the evil crimes of the day, learn more about celebrities everyday which seem to shout to the world that you need to care what is going on with their lives...as if who are they anyway? and watch all the problems brought by corrupt officials. You have been tired the whole day and you will be dumped with bad news every night?

hi there averygirl72.
i think it really depends on the shows that you watch on tv if it will be a stress reliever to you or contribute more to your daily stress. i watch the news diligently at night to be updated on what has happened throughout the day not just locally in my country but globally as well. although, most of the news is really negative, that is the harsh reality of the world. i just tend to seek out more positive news. i'm really grateful that there are segments in news programs even whole news programs that focus on the good and positive things and events.
anyway, as a stress reliever, i also watch my favorite shows like 'grimm' and 'suits' plus if there are movies airing in hbo that i fancy, i tend to allot time to watch these as well.
one good stress reliever are the children's shows and cartoons as well as the cooking shows that air in cable tv. i find myself more relaxed after watching these types of shows.
cheers and happy mylotting!!!

Hi Allen, I completely concur with your point. We cannot put TV on task for our mood fluctuations.

That is true, there are times that my stress is actually relieved by TV as I somewhat escape the reality or the real world as I am entertained by TV. However, there are times that it can really make my mind more cluttered.

hi varunkrishna007 and averygirl72.
glad that you guys agree with what i wrote.
it is really up to the person if the tv becomes a stress reliever or a contributor of stress. i choose to make it a stress reliever and it seems to work wonders for me.
cheers and happy mylotting!!!

I rarely watch the news anymore, except maybe to catch the weather. That doesn't mean I don't stay informed. But I can pick and choose what news to read on the internet. I am so tired of all the negativity in the news. So I don't let television be my stress giver. I just let it be my stress reliever. I use it to enjoy sports, comedies, and a good drama now and then.

Right, too much negativity cannot help at all. I actually do not like the spirit of the local news here, I actually watch American news and it is much better. You know yes we need to know them but they must not fill 90% of the news program. Why not focus on the good news happening around the country?

TV used to be a way to relax but more and more the programs that are aired do not promote relaxation. I do not watch reality TV at all. I think that kind of programing is so stupid. There are a lot of programs that seem to be real popular that I just can't see what the attraction is. And yet it costs more and more to get TV reception.

I used to open the TV after a tiring work but lately I enjoy the silence brought by not having the TV turned off. Some programs are really plain stupid that it is better not to watch them at all.

I think no stress giver or reliver if use limited time but if use excess time then may stress giver. Because watching TV is not bad but spend more time for it is not good.

Could be right, if we just limit our exposure, it can be good.

There are actually great shows on TV and great news programs. Maybe I should just choose between networks.

I think celebrity news is too much sometimes, it can get us if we let it, and also investigation series, it makes us think so bad how the case can be solve, so for me I only watch TV if when I like to and most of the time I only listen to radios for 80s-90s songs.

Nice, that is better listening over songs in the radio than be bombarded with news. Sometimes showbiz news is really so much, all the gossips, the whereabouts, the love life of this celebrities are the top of the news like can it affect my life?

I stopped watching TV when I started living on my own. I do not really want to hear about negative news over and over again because I can't seem to live a normal life thinking that anytime, those things can happen to innocent people like me. There was even a time when I had nightmares after watching news about a horrible crime. I really do not want that to happen again because that is really terrible I do not even want to sleep again because I fear that I might have a nightmare again.
But there are also disadvantages when you don't watch TV or news. There was this time that I've read an article about Pope Benedict's message. I paused for a while and asked myself - Pope who? Who's Pope Benedict? What happened to Pope John Paul II? Imagine my colleague's reaction when I told her that I learned that there's a new pope when in fact, this news was more than a year old already.

Exactly, it is just that every night the news are terrible mostly crime news. I cannot do something about them anyway it is very far from my place and even if there is a crime news near our place, they simply sensationalize it to catch public attention. I just surf the internet to keep with important news.

I regard TV as a source of information and I can keep in touch with the whole world by watching news. As for other TV programs, I only watch those that i enjoy or from which i can learn something. Therefore I can not say whether it's stress giver or stress reliever and it's completely up to what you choose to watch.

Yeah, it depends on the program or show, if the show is good, TV can be good.

I believe it depends on how you see it and the programs you are watching. Generally, I treat my TV as copanion when I'm alone. It puts me to sleep. I still like cartoon network and some kids stuff, though I'm in my 30s.
And also like you, avoiding those current events, though I'm still updated with those through newspapers
Thanks

Yeah that is true. When I am very tired and I open the TV, it even puts me to sleep and even tired my eyes and even the sound of it can put you to sleep, mysterious but true.

If you are stressed then I don't think TV is going to relieve your stress. Firstly it is not a good source of rest. It will not help you sort out whatever you are stressed about - in fact it will sap your time and leave you less time to do what you need to do which will make you more stressed. That is my opinion anyway.

Right, it makes you less active and it lessens your time as you glue your eyes on the TV.

Yep, TV can be both stress giver and stress reliever. It really depends on what you watch. If you want to be relieved then you must choose programs or shows that are of entertaining and cheerful themes and not those bad news that you watch late at night when you've been tired the whole day.

You cannot blame it on TV programmes if you feel stressed. But always you can choose which programs to watch and which not to. these days too many realty shows are being aired and I have to admit I have got sick of seeing them. They are mixed with so much melodrama that you feel a certain empathy for the participants. Its like you take all the pressure while your participant is ousted and it inturn has a very much negative effect. So better chose the programmes that you want to watch and you would you feel better.

True, we should not let the TV programmes affect us or stress us so much. It is within our control.

I don't let things I cannot control on the news get me depressed, Of course I feel for the people who die etc but I don't let them destroy my health with worry

Well depends on how you use this and how you accept things that you see on TV. If TV entertains you and makes you life informed one then TV is a stress reliever for you. But if you take everything on TV as a burden and makes your life miserable seeing all those things you watch then it is a stress giver.
One can watch TV the whole day and can find himself relieve from stress because he finds what he watch as entertaining. But for some it may be stress giver since he tries to assimilate every feelings that TV may bring him then it can cause him a lot of stress.

Definitely, it depends on every person. TV is really both of giver and reliever of stress.

It will actually depend on the shows you are watching. Of course if you watch those horrible news all the time chances are you will be stressed instead of getting relaxed. In the same way, if you watch tearjerkers chances are you will end up crying and sad while watching TV. This is the reason why I don't really watch such kind of shows. I prefer educational shows, those that teach about home and gardening improvement or cooking shows and the likes. I'd rather learn while being entertained and relaxed at the same time. If I can't find shows that fit my taste I'd rather just turn the TV off.

I will not say that news program we regularly watched but then I get really bored I look for other channels and I found their news reports better - more good news and less news about violence.

Yes, I worry too if I am a bad person coz' I don't care about the crime news everyday. But there is nothing I can do with those bad news. I exercise my right not to be exposed to these really, really bad news everyday. I check the world news but local crime news--I would like to skip all of them.
