What do you think is the average rate I could ask for web research work in oDesk? My present rate is at $3.75/hr, but I am wondering if I could raise my rate a little. Any ideas? TIA

Yes, maybe you can raise it but there are some or most of the clients who would prefer lower rate contractors. The higher your rate the lesser the chances for you to get hired. But maybe you could ask your present employer if it's okay with them to increase your rate. And only if you are working with them long enough.

I agree with you that many clients prefer low bid contractors and it is frustrating sometimes. I am contemplating of asking my client for a raise, but I am hesitant as it might turned them off. Thanks for your insight, chentunacao!

The first job I got from Odesk was $2 per hour It lasted for months. I increased my hourly rate after that and couldn't get any. What I did was every time I applied for a job, I would scan if that client already had previously hired contractors then I would check what are the usual hourly rate of the contractors she/he hired then that would be my bid. But of course not too low. I am doing web research also. For my client now. My bid was 2.50 I was working for months with that rate, but she voluntarily increased it to 3.33 afterwards, basing it to my performance.

That was great! I started at $1 and raise it gradually, my current rate on my active projects are between $3-3.75/hr, but I feel I am stucked at that rate and I am trying to raise it on my new job applications, and as you have said, all were rejected--they prefer low bidder.
