Reading newspaper on the way to work

When I was in London, I often looked at people engrossed in reading their newspaper while they were in the train on their way to work. It was amazing that they could finish reading all the contents of the newspaper less than an hour because when they got off the train they left the newspaper in the train. This never happen in my country. The people who read newspaper always bring it to their home. So, when I was abroad I never bought any newspaper. I just picked some up because people left it. At that time I just didn't dig why they didn't bring their newspaper to their home. They could have used it for other purposes, you know.

I need to ask my British friend about this. Though he never took the train, he must know the reason behind this. They probably got that paper for free. I don't think they have read through each content in the papers. They might just have skimmed read it. Maybe the don't see it fit to bring it with them as they only see it as a useless piece of trash.

When I was there I did not think of asking them questions about why they left newspapers they had read on the seat. I didn't see others pick it up either. What about in your country toni? Do you bring home newspapers you have bought, too?

Don't you read news from your smart phones? Do paper edition newspapers and the ones published electronically deliver the same information? If you think from smart phones you can read newspapers, don't you think it is a waste of money if we also buy the paper editons? Happy mylotting, toni.

We never buy papers on a news stand. They are delivered to our home. So we just read it from there and never take it anywhere.

I've seen that in movies but never actually in real life. Nevr been to London either. I know where Im from people dont do that. Newspaper are so expensive people dont just read them and practically give them away. I dont get why peopledo that, you spent your money on it, and moneys shouldnt be squandered. Why not find a different purpose for it..Guess some people have never heard of recycling in 2012

Recycling newspaper won't give them any benefit, I don't think. Perhaps, British people have much more valuable things to concentrate on rather than to think what they should do with the already read newspaper.

In fact, they left used newspapers at will. To companies, they may want to have used newspapers recycled and make money from it. Of course conserving and protecting environment are matters of importance. It should be brought to the public to make them realize how important it is to protect this planet. I was just thinking who would collect all those used newspapers travellers left on the train?

recycling is not beneficial to them? Conserving and protecting the environment is not a matter of importance? Well thats a bit backward dont you think?

I have seen this in movies actually.. maybe because their papers are free? somehow they leave it so others could read it too.. and here in the Philippines, people bring it with them to use for other purposes... like store and collect it to sell in junkyard shops!

I noticed British people always rushed. They had nothing to say in the train. They are really people of a few words. It might be that if they brought with them newspaper, it would be only a burden to them.

If everyone tries to bring it home then many people can't have newspapers to read. If people think of the others, they should not bring it to home even though no one prevent them bringing it.

Yes I also shocked when see the people finish their reading in train or in toilet. Some person has habit they not waste even a second and do some work in that time. I have also such habit while traveling in train read my books or newspaper.

Oh, it is the same in Korea. I see people pick up newspapers, after reading they leave it on a newspaper-shelf in a train station and the others can take it for reading. People never bring newspapers to their home even though it is totally free. Everyday they can read new newspapers and leave it back. I like it but i can't read Korean much then i never touch to it. I think people's behavior in there is very good.

Hi friend, good to hear that you don't buy news paper and used this kind of free papers, lot of persons will read the news papers in shops, libraries and in train or bus while traveling, they don't buy the news paper and simply get it from others for free, this kind of people are really smart, they read the new without spending any thing

Does that also happen in your country, vidhyaprakash_2? I think people in India are also busy people. They read newspaper and just throw or leave it on the train seat.

you will get the answer in the below reply, in my country persons are very careful, they don't throw away their paid papers, always keep it safe, if they got the paper in free manner, they will try their maximum to keep it safe and finally they will collect a lot of papers and sell them to a paper shop for a good price

I think this is just a habit. In the past when I went to work by bus, I liked reading the ebooks or watching the movies from my cellphone. It is similar with some people who read the newspaper. It may be strange for you, but I think I really take advantage of the time:) We live in a busy society, so we shall cherish every minute. I love China

I've seen this same case in my country several times. In my opinion, it's no need to read every word while reading newspaper, people only focus on their favourite information. Why they leaves newpaper in the train? Maybe they think their newpaper has no favourite information any more and it's worthless.

They just consider it useless. You are right that they think newspaper they read has no longer value in it, so they are better off leaving it there behind them.

That's what I'm thinking. Bringing the newspaper home for other purpose, like for wrapping things and right now, I sell it to the junk shop to earn several amount or cents. Recycle is the thing here. Nice discussion there. Thanks

Their way of thinking in terms of newspapers that have been read and what to do after that are surely different to other people who still think that used newspaper still can be benefited like you just said. You can keep them all and sell them later. That's great.

That's amazing if its true that they finished reading the entire new paper in less than an hour, but i guess some people do and some does not. Other might have just skipped on some pages. I seldom read new paper, i don't like so much reading comprehension.I would rather open the television and get the current news.

If you had to travel by train, would you just sit or have something to read? If you think reading newspapers would do you a lot of goods, would you buy the newspaper or pick up the one already left by someone?

I have never been to London. However I can make out an assumption to get you a clear picture of what they actually were doing. The people there have a very busy schedule as they need to catch up with many things (still the economy is fading away its shine). The people pick up these newspapers from any vendor or any magazine stand nearby the station. Then they must be only reading a page or two thoroughly that they regularly follow. This not reading actually they were keeping themselves busy in throughout the journey to avoid any mental distraction. Why did they then not kept or take the half read newspaper with them. It is because the newspaper is not an expensive stuff and had already been read or followed by the people. They just don't get burdened by it.

I agree with your point in this case, they wouldn't bother their heads thinking about what to be done with the newspaper they just read. You are right they just read things they like. They didn't in fact read all. Thank for responding.

Hey. I'm from London, although not living there now. You were probably seeing people read the "metro" on the tube. Its a free newspaper that you can pick up in the morning on your way to work, which is while people feel free to leave them behind on the seats for anyone else to pick up after they get off. I quite like that too and never see it on public transportation in Poland, that's where I moved to. People usually just scan through the news so they don't read the entire newspaper, they choose what they find more interesting. Plus, I guess, reading everyday like that gets you reading faster in general.

I see. I was there but was not aware that there were free newspapers there. I got on the train from bayswater station and didn't find any newspaper stands that provided free newspaper. Thank for the info. Say, by the way, are you a londoner?

well it happens because people are really busy or really idle in London so either you might see someone with no newspaper, relaxed and smiling and wondering. Or you could see busy people as you described. Well picking up newspaper someone left like in London....i was like kidding me right but yeah i would think of doing it if someone left it.[em]happy[/e

Reading is probably better than just sitting in a train doing nothing. So,I guess, they read it to just avoid their mind wandering away. What do you say about it?
12 Sep 12
hey yazalong, I once tried reading news paper in train and i actually miss my sspot:D, so since then i avoid reading in trains. how come they can finish the entire content in just an hour:S?? but yeah i second your thought that they can do alot with newspaper but i guess some people just dont like to carry things entire day or probably they have no plans to do anything with the paper:D.

Yes, perhaps, the already read newspaper becomes worthless to them, that is why they just leave them behind them. It's probably a custom to them to do so.

I have done that several time before. I have read a paper or a book on the bus or in places that I had to spend time at. I always take my paper home though, but I know in most places, people just pick up the paper, read the good bits, and leave the rest.

It's not usual here in our country too. People bring their newspapers at home for other purposes. They can sell it to junkshops (when they have collected a lot) Or use in other things. At least you've save some cents for having free newspapers on the train.

Yeah, in my countries, too. People who bought newspapers always bring them home to continue reading them and after that they keep the used newspapers under the table just in case their guests want to read them.

This reminds me of my several plane flights where we are given papers for free. We can pick any of them as we get into the plane and I too leave that paper behind when I get off the plane!. Back home we collect these papers and sell them to shop keepers who use them to wrap items bought by their customers. At home, we use them for different other purposes too.

Hello.. Ha ha.. In my country also people will not forget those newspaper..(not in all cases). Personally I only take around 15 minutes to read whole news paper. Well, I only go for topics which are interested to me, all other got skip. So that can be the reason that they can complete news paper fast, as different people have different habit. Some may only go for head lines.

Hi yanzalong! It's good to have new information here. I have no idea that this thing is happening as we in our place, we usually bring with us those papers for future reference or for any other purposes it may serve.

oh wow i have never seen that in real, I have seen it in movies though. And then I thought it would not be happening in real. Good you shared and I came to know it. yeah there are many things one can do with the new paper to reuse it. maybe those people leaving the paper in the train have no time for all that and they just prefer other to read it in the train. Good for you I guess. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

The same to you. I think they bought it. In London there was nothing for free. I wasn't sure if they wanted others to read it too. How nice they were to let others read it. However, I didn't see others pick it up. The newspaper just laid there on the seat.
