Anyone with experience using buddy pass while travelling?

I heard from a friend who work in the airlines were given a buddy pass. She offer one buddy pass to me where refuse to accept. I hard it is hard to have a seat on a plane first because people who use buddy get to be on the last list. I am very impatience when t comes to waiting. So up to now I have not experience traveling using buddy pass. Some tell me it less inexpensive?
