How safe is online banking?

Just recently, like yesterday, I applied for online banking. I've never done online banking before and I don't have that much money in my bank account, but still I am worried. How safe is our money in this system? There had been a problem when I first applied so I had to make personal follow-ups at our local bank which had to cancel my first application so they could repeat the whole application process so it can be activated. I was asked to log in to my bank account right there in the bank so I had to type my username and password as well. When I left I asked the bank personnel-in-charge if my account had been logged out and he replied yes, as it automatically logs out after some time. I am quite apprehensive though. How safe is online banking?

I'm not sure about this but when it comes to online banking, I don't let my money stay there for atleast a month. If it's just small amount yes I let it, but if it's thousand already I transfer it to my debit card. But I only trust EON and Paypal in online banking. It's easy to transfer funds, buy something online and to receive money from another person. :)

I wouldnt trust online banking at all, especially with all the different websites you visit daily, you never know when someone downloads a program in your system and those programs are so smart they know when your writing typing your credit card information in any text field because they can log the information.

Most of the banks have three layered security. So it's very safe.
Layer 1: Log in username and Password.
Layer 2: Transaction password for editing profile and adding beneficiary.
Layer 3: Linking our Mobile number to our account. (Each time a verification code to our mobile while doing online transactions.)
Besides the above, we are logged out every 20 minutes. Unless you give away all the information to another person, it's very much safe, even from a cyber cafe.

Just like what they have said, online banking nowadays is generally safe. Just don't do transactions using public computers. And if you are using your own computer, be sure to always clean it with antivirus software to protect you from being pry upon by people using malicious software and spyware.

The safety is in your hands. Not only online banking, everything is in our hands. As long as all the process are electronically processed and the man/human involvement has not much importance on remote processing.
I means to say, all the access proceedings and process handling which you carries are to be highly confidential and need to be kept secret from others. Of course, there may be certian least level percentage of errors which may happen from the banker side and it is quite common but very less.
I am doing most of the banking transactions for the last 14-15 years and not even a single error or issue come up in any of my transaction process. One issue took place was a mistake with from my end, where I didn't provided the necessary details.
So, if we take care of the relevant things, it is highly recommendable and you can do the transactions via online. They have various levels of security cheks and it can be get manipulated only for such a technically skilled people, but it is very rarely happens.
However, to open an account and to do the dealings by online, I think you may have to keep minimum balance in the account and few essential formalities to be completed. You can go for the online banking, and you have to do as it will improve and most of the people are done it so long back.

Online banking is very safe provided you heed the warnings given to you by your bank. FYI, I have an ATM account with a bank that is connected to Paypal. I am using online banking for more than a year now and I am satisfied with the results.
One important reminder when using online banking-- do not answer email claiming that you bank is updating their database and you have to provide your email and password. Your bank will not do that. Better still inquire with your bank personally if you receive email from them.
When transacting or asking personal matters about your account, go to your bank manager.
Yes. Please use your ATM card. Current technology call for online banking. Online banking is safe and reliable.

It depends where you are, in the country I am with, online banking is relatively new and thus banks have remained safe - like they would require you to fill out a form online but would request that you visit them for verification (which is actually the point that we do online transactions in the first place - so that it would be paperless and no need to do things on the branch). I have also noticed that most of the transactions are done online but were applied in person. So, I think it's relatively safe here.
But if you really have great apprehensions, then keep the bank account where you put most of your money not enrolled online. Only enroll those accounts with limited money supply. And don't put your credit cards online so to be sure.
I use debit card for online transactions since the money or funds there are limited according to how much I want it. Credit cards could reach up to the limit - so you'd be in trouble if those fall on the wrong hands.
Have a great mylot experience ahead!

Based on my experience online banking is safe. I've been doing that for the fast few years and I've not encountered any problem so far. Regarding automatic log out I think you should trust the bank personnel who told you it logs out automatically. I don't think they are there to give you false information after all.

online banking is pretty safe..as long as u keep your personal info.like password..pin numbers etc..unknown to other people..or even spywares from your computers//so u need to scan your computer once in a while for rootkit..spywares etc..if u detect something fishy going on with your account..

I haven't had a problem with online banking so far, fortunately. It saves a lot of time and even money, especially since there is no bank in the town where I live, so I would need to travel a lot to get things done. I think it's safe if you are careful with it. I only use my computer at home to log in to my account, not public computers, don't save the passwords and keep virus protection updated.

Hey Cutie18f,
I love using online banking, I would say maybe 80% of my banking is online. interac e-transfers are great to send money to other people, you can order cheques. I trust it completely. I signed up at my bank as well which would seem most reliable.
Hope you enjoy online banking!
Have a great day :)

I have been doing online banking since 2007. So far, I never have an issue with regards to using it. Actually, it is not only safe but also very convenient. I can check my balance, pay my bills, buy cellphone credits and transfer money safely online. Just follow the tips shared by our fellow mylotters to protect your account.
I also suggest that you change your password at least once a month.

I think it is safe I do some online banking and so far I don't encounter
any problems. Most of them has a high security maybe you should be aware
if you used public computer. Always make sure you log out and clear the
history and cache of the computer when leaving the shop.

I think if it's a well-known bank, then nothing to fear. I use the online banking system of BPI and Unionbank and they're safe. I can easily track all my withdrawals and deposits without leaving the house. I can see where my money is going and where it comes from.

Hello
Online banking is quite safe and easy way of banking these days. Yes it is quite safe if we follow some basic things. If we not, then surely it can create some measure issues later.
There are few basic rules like never share password, not to login net banking from public computer(like from cyber cafe), use proper antivirus so that virus not create problem, etc.. This are quite basic rules and if we follow it, I don't think we need to worry about our online banking account. My dad is using this facility since long and so far never faced a single problem.

I think online banking is safe rather than ATM card. I've used online banking for about 3 years, it hasn't occured any problems. But i have made several mistakes of using ATM card. One time, i just hurry up to withdraw money from ATM machine by using ATM card, after i done it completely, i just catched my money and then my phone was ring, i answered my phone and left my card without existing. Finally, i came back and i found my card was disappeared and i lost my $500 money in my card, certainly my money was stolen by this person who was the next one operating on this ATM machine.
I've heard this terrible news in TV that if our ATM card's account number and password were known by some people, they can made a duplicate card the same with our own, and by this duplicate card, they can withdraw our money at well.
