Heavy Metal Lyrics

I recently brought a friend of mine to her first ever metal concert and her first comment was, "But I can't understand a single word he's saying!" To which I laughed and replied, "you don't have to always understand what they're saying, it's more about the music and the tone." Does anyone else have that issue when listening to music, if you can't understand the lyrics, you'd rather not listen to it at all?
Personally it doesn't bother me at all, if I wanted to know what they were saying that badly, I could look up the lyrics or check out the jacket in their CD but apparently some people have a deep seeded need to understand what a singer is saying.

It was a local band called Faces of Bayon. They're big into doom metal, and while I generally prefer something a little faster, they're still a great band.

I never could quite get use to slower doom metal. There's something about it that almost makes me want to fall asleep and it almost doesn't seem quite right for metal.

One reason I can't stand most metal. It's always heavy music (no problem with that) but with vocalists who sound like they have lung cancer or something and scream at the top of their lungs gibberish that annoys me.
So yeah, I like to understand lyrics when I hear them. If it's about the music.... Make it instrumental!

It appears that you and my friend have that in common then! I tend to think that those types of vocals are just part of the whole "metal" experience though. I suppose it's an acquired taste.

Well heavy metal is my music of choice. Some metal is anyway. But I've always been interested in the music more than the lyrics. It's true that it's sometimes hard to understand the lyrics in heavy metal music. But then it's sometimes hard to understand the lyrics in any kind of music. And also, when you can understand the lyrics, what they are trying to say, in other words the meaning behind the lyrics, doesn't always make sense either. When I hear a song for the first time my only concern is whether or not I like the sound of the music. I couldn't care less what the lyrics say. Because if I don't like the way the song sounds then I'm not going to listen to it long enough to learn the lyrics anyway. I don't listen to music of any kind for the sake of the message of the lyrics. I listen to it purely for the pleasure and enjoyment I get from the music itself. The lyrics are only secondary.

That's exactly the point I was trying to my make to my friend. And it's not just metal, there are other types of music where there are certain songs that you can't understand the lyrics to. Take for instance R.E.M's song "It's The End of the World As We Know It," it's not a metal song but there are parts of the song where the lead singer sings the lyrics so quickly that many people have no idea what he's saying. And what about songs that aren't in your native language? Just because you don't speak the language doesn't necessarily make the songs any less beautiful.

I agree with you. I am in a band, I also listen to heavy metal music. Our type of songs are heavy too. If my friends ask me to hare my musics I will say that all of my songs are noisy, is that ok? then they will say, "where the hell on earth did you get that music?" and I will just laugh. hehe.

I personally love metal lyrics so I understand what they say it´s just a matter of time. But what´s metal without good riffs and drumms and bass and everything ? Nothing eheh. ;) Just because the first time peopl listen they dont´understand it doens´t mean they´ll abandon it they should read the lyrics and try to understand and so on ! \0/ enjoy metal as it´s full
