Hello fellow mylotters, I've been adviced by a gynecologist that I had consulted 4 weeks ago to undergo surgery to remove a uterine fibroid, because it is already grown as big as a 4 month old baby in the womb and it is really already causing me so much discomfort, I am even experiencing bleeding between periods, but I was also told by a concerned colleague of mine who is a professional Doctor, that it is not advisable for me to underwent this kind of surgery as there is a very very high risk of adhesions that can occur on my uterus and this will lead to infertility. I am still single and I still want to have a child of my own, but with this problem on my fibroid, I don't really know which decission I should make, that's why I wanted to know and get some infos on people here in mylot who had the same case as I have and if they went for surgery and had children after that. Please give me some piece of info regarding this. Thanks in advance.

PLEASE, PLEASE be sure it's a uterine fibroid. I was told by two doctors that I had to have uterine fibroids removed by having a hysterectomy. This was ten years ago, so hopefully that's changed now. But anyway, reading all I could about hysterectomies for fibroid tumors, everything pointed to NO. Still uncomfortable with this thing I went to another doctor, who said he would advise a hysterectomy, EXCEPT FIRST he wanted to do a couple of tests. In less than a week I found out that this was not a fibroid tumor, it was a tumor on my ovary and that a CA125 test was run, and my number was off the charts. I say an oncologist he recommended, and by the end of the week I was in surgery. It had in fact been ovarian cancer.
I do not want to scare you, calm down if you are, because I'm here now over ten years later to tell you just make sure they know what the actual tumor is. Not every surgeon can go in and deal with cancer, there's a very specific procedure and they need to have an oncologist on board to be sure.
PLEASE, I hope this doesn't frighten you but make sure what ever doctor you pick is 100% certain and I really don't see how without a few tests first.

hi,thanks for your immediate response. I've had several ultrasounds and it shows the fibroids on my uterus. But, i still want to know what are the tests that you underwent so that i can ask the other doctor that i plan to visit for a second opinion. thanks for your help.

I had an MRI, I thought, but then when i was there for some reason I think it was a CAT (PET), I'm so sorry, but it's the test where they see inside in much more detail. I had to get an IV of dye, if that's any hint.
I had ultrasounds and that just shows there's a huge something there and if it's large enough it distorts their view.
