Jails Providing Free Education to Inmates..

Once upon a time I used to be so against jail inmates recieving free education, it just seemed so unfair to me. When you think about it, it's probably a positive thing for the system because it's rehabilitating these people so that when they get out of jail they actually have a better chance of finding a job and staying out of the legal system. There are certain types of criminals that I don't think should be recieving this sort of treatment- child molesters for example. However, people who were poor and dealing drugs on the streets to survive or a hooker who was trying to provide enough money to care for her 5 children, I can justify this kind of criminal getting an education at no cost. What are your thoughts?

I think it is a good idea to try and educate most offenders. This could be a big plus for a lot of them. I have seen some real cool dogs that were trained by inmates. I am all for it.

I think most importantly, a solid education would give the offender a chance to rebuild their life when they are entered back into society and the chances of them reoffending should be less.

I so agree. Just think of the self-esteem it would give them knowing they have the skills to get a good job.

Well the self esteem would be important however I think the most important thing would be to keep them out of the legal system and onto living a legitimate lifestyle that is acceptable to society. In the end it's probably cheaper to pay for their education, than it is to have them in the courts hands.

I think that free education is a good thing, and I know from my country that some of the people who took an education while they were in jail managed to turn their lives around and they stayed away from crime when they got out of jail. Recently a very controversial suggestion was introduced in my country. Someone suggested that certain offenders should be able to take an education INSTEAD of going to jail. You would only get this offer if are young and if your crime wasn't very serious. If you have killed somebody or someone like that you will not be able take an education instead. The people who are in favor of this suggestion think that it will be an advantage for our society because some of the people who take an education won't commit crime in the future. Other people say that it is unfair that you can take an education instead of going to jail and that you need to get punished when you commit a crime.

I would disagree with getting an education instead of going to jail, I think it's still important for everyone to serve their time according to the law.

I'm for educating everybody, no matter who they are. I can't distinguish between hookers and child molesters, to be quite honest. Treat everyone the same and educate them, is my radical view, extreme as it may be to others.

I respect that opinion. I suppose it couldn't hurt anything to educatem them all, what could it really hurt?
