The best answer there may help you.
I had a dog with loud noises phobia and I know how it hurts to see them shaking and being so desperate.
I suggest you to help your dog find a quiet place to hide and rest during storms. Don't force him to leave the hiding place until he feels safe to get out.

Oh, poor pet. How about staying close to its side and comfort it. I hope it will stop thundering soon. I haven't had a long time with our puppy before. It only lived two months. I only saw him every weekend together with my husband and son. We didn't have much time to attend to his needs. I don't know if someone tried to feed him something or mistreated him because of envy. LOL. Take care of your cute pet. Thanks for sharing and happy mylotting.

Staying close to a frightened dog and trying to comfort it is a mistake. The frightened dog will understand that he does a good thing and he will repeat what he was doing: being afraid.
The right thing to do when a dog shows fear of noises is either to try to distract his attention with something he likes - playing games with him or something, or to let him hide in a comfortable place, where he can rest until the reason of his fear disappears.

I agree partially. If my dog is afraid and wants to sit on my lap I am going to let it. But I'm not going to reach out to him otherwise because when I have he just seems to get even more scared so I just tell him it will be OK, turn the TV up and try to not make a big deal about it. Works sometimes depending on how bad the storm is.

I think fire is not good near the pet they can sleep in thunder. You can put some small blanket for your poor pet.

I never heard of these vests. Do they really work? If so maybe I would try it on my little dog. He is a shitzu too and is afraid of a lot of things. If you try it let us know if it works O.K.

the vests for calming a pet work because they are slightly tight, they feel like a hug to us and it triggers your sympathetic nervous system to calm you down. children with autism use them as well. they do work but i cant say if its 100% to cure your dog, id give it a try though. :)
