In India it is a practice for us to pray to Lord Ganesha before starting any new venture. In fact other poojas are done after performing ganesh pooja. Every year in September comes Ganesh Chathurthi -- birth day of Ganesh. On this day we make vada, sundal(channa), sweet cake and offer in pooja along with fruits and coconut. A day after the pooja the Ganesh idol is immersed in the nearby well or sea.
this pooja is celebrated well in Maharashtra state-- wherein it is done for a few days after a week the Ganesh idol is immersed in sea. Now this practice is adopted in Chennai also.
Ganesh is one of the two sons of Lord Shiva. Ganesh was supposed to act smart. Once a sacred mango was there and in order to decide whether Ganesh will get it or his brother Muruga (Karthikeya) will get it-- his parents -- shiva and Parvathi told them go round the world and whoever does it first will be given that mango.
ganesh said "Mother and father are equal to God and hence it is sufficient I go a round of my parents to go around the world. He did that and got the prize mango. Muruga became angry and he sat on top of a hill. That is why many muruga temples are constructed on top of hills.
I have not added any photo in my discussions so far. I want to start that with affixing Ganesh photo with this discussion.
Hope you also do Ganesh Pooja before starting of any new venture. In case you belong to other religions what is the similar practice adopted before starting of new ventures. pl share.

Hi Ravisivan,
Ganesh Chathurthi is partied about Indians onto every part of the universe, I have viewed a Ganesh statue at Bangakok in the year of 1997. Now a days to my information each part of the India is partying about Ganesh Chathurthi, but this celebration more well known in Maharastra and Hyderabad. Ganesh Statues are orchestrated every hideout and corner of the avenues in whole Andhra Pradesh and party about it as Ganesh Navarathri and on final day the Ganesh statue will be plunged in the waterway or ocean.

surekha:
yes. you did not see this discussion earlier because you were not able to allot time for mylot probably.
Nowadays in almost all iNDIAN houses you find a lot of Ganesh statues--small ones. We always deisre that whatever work we begin should go on, come to a good conclusion without hurdles and get us the desired fruit. the enthusiasm with which we begin should continue till the end. It is prudent to always think of the pros and cons before actually beginning the work. But sometimes, even though we plan our wrok meticulously and execute it with great care and precision, we meet with unforeseen hurdles and our efforts do not succeed. There are forces beyond our control. they bring hurdles in our way and make our efforts futile.
So we pray Lord Ganesha before starting any new work.
Now Navarathri is fast approaching. enjoy. blessings.

surekha:
in south India we worship Lord subramanya -- younger brother of Ganesha. I think worshipping Karthikeya or subramanya is not that common in North India. Please share. discuss with your mother in law/mother if necessary and then tell us. good day.

Ganesh is the God of commerce and business. In Maharashtra, it is celebrated in a big way like Durga Puja in West Bengal is celebrated. It is nice to see that Chennai is also following the same.

Probably in another response, you asked me about K.C.Das' shop. Is it K.C.Das' shop at Esplanade? I have no idea of it. As for the price of rosogolla, I can give you the information of the prices in our area, it is- big size-Rs 10=00 and small size-Rs6=oo or 7=00; it depends on the shop. Singada in our locality is sold at Rs5=00 per piece.

Didi:
You must be very happy in welcoming the ensuing durga puja from 16th. Great. I am reminded of 1974 when I was in Kolkata -- S.R.Das Road -- I use to go round durga pandals -- and see the Goddess in kalighat, Gariahat.
Didi-- you have not answered my query - what is the price of rosogolla nowadays and singada?

Yeah I know this story.
Here in north India nowadays this festival is also gaining popularity.
And people are buying and decorating Lord Ganesha's idol which they will immerse in the Ganga (or any other river as there is no sea nearby) after 11 days.
Ganesh pooja on the other hand is much celebrated among Hindus all around the world.
It has a great importance in Hindu religion.
Thanks for starting this discussion.
