Some time ago I thought that I saw in a mouse in the basement. I didn't see it properly, but I assumed that it is was a mouse and we placed a mouse trap in the basement. Every time we checked the trap it was empty. Today my husband saw it and he laughed and said: "It is no mouse, it is a toad!" I have seen frogs and toads outside and but I have never shared my house with one of them. I am not sure how it got in, but there much be a hole somewhere. We don't intend to kill it, but we want it to leave the basement. How do you remove a toad from the house without killing it?

I'm trying to remember if toads like water.
Maybe you can put a small dish of water where you think the little guy's hiding by the stairs along with a dish of worms for him to eat. He might just come out long enough for you to throw a very light towel or if you're quick enough, a plastic bowl or pail over him. I would think he's hungry though so maybe the worms would work, but he has to be able to see them (glass bowl?) or something to that fact.
Good luck, I can imagine how hard this is but it is kind of funny too.

Oh good, then it wasn't such a goofy idea after all, lol! If you use the bowl that's great..if you use a tall, deep bowl or pail I would put something in it that he can climb on or hang on to. I don't know if they can get so tired swimming that they might drown. I know they drown in pools, just like frogs do because of this. If this doesn't work I would still try the worms, unless you have a lot of spiders and bugs down there for him to eat. I hope this all works out and he gets to go back outside where he belongs. Good luck!

My knowledge about toads is very limited but tonight when I talked to my mother on the phone I mentioned the toad in our basement and she told me that she had caught a toad in her living room. She had done the thing that you suggested. She used a plastic bowl of water and the toad jumped into the plastic bowl and my mother was able to carry it outside. We have filled a small bowl with water and we hope that our toad is going to do the same thing so that we can carry him outside.

My suggerstion will be to take to a distant park and let out the same into the park for it to manage itself. Is such an act not allowed in your place?

At the moment the toad is still hiding in the basement under the stairs so it is hard for us to catch it. We have placed a small pail with water in the basement and we hope that the toad will jump into the water. When that happens we will carry the toad outside.

You can always put gloves on and pick it up. The poor guy is probably trapped and cant find his way out. I had a toad in my window well once not sure how he got in there but he was not able to get back out I had to open the window in our basement and take him out that way. I am sure that if you let him go in your yard he will stay there and keep the bugs and pests away for you. Thats what we did with the toad we found. What ever you do dont hurt the poor guy. I hope that you guys are able to get him out with out to much damage to him. Also you could look up and see if there are any amphibian experts in your area that would come and get him for you.

Yes, we don't want to hurt him, we just want to help him get back outside. My husband went back to the basement and he tried to catch the toad and carry it outside, but it seems like the toad is hiding somewhere and he couldn't find it. He will try again later and hopefully we will be able to find the toad and help it get out of the basement.

Place a cartboard on the floor and when it gets on it, take a bucket(or something similar) and put it over it. Grab the cartboard and bucket and take it out.

We will try that when we see it next time. I hope that it isn't too fast and that we will manage to put a bucket over it and take it out. We don't need anymore animals in the house It sounds like it has found a hiding place under the stairs, but hopefully we will manage to catch it and take it outside.

Anyway getting back to you, Just try to put a cloth over it and then grab him or put him the bucket and throw in the garden. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

I think that I would also scream in that situation I hope that we will be able to pick up the toad and take it outside. We still haven't found it and I think it is hiding somewhere in the basement. My husband is a hoarder and we have plenty of stuff in the basement so there are many places where a toad could hide. We hope that it will leaving the hiding place so that we will be able to take it outside. We don't want to kill it, but we don't want it in the basement either.

i experienced the same thing just the other day. a frog went inside our house when i opened the door. luckily my husband was here so he's the one who shoo it away because im afraid of it.
i guess you have to make a trap that will not harm the frog.
i hope you'd be able to let him out.

That was funny! I think the only way you can make the toad leave your house is by shooing him away. Or you could hop after it so he can get out of the house.
