RANT!!
This really annoyed me..
On my desk in work I have a calendar, and that calendar gives me a quote every morning.
Well..
This mornings quote? It annoyed me!!!!
It was this.. “Everyone makes mistakes, that’s why pencils have erasers.”
Ugh, NO!!!
Yes everyone makes mistakes, and yes pencils have erasers but come on!! When people make mistakes they are generally unfixable, and even if they are unfixable, they are at least unforgettable. We can’t go and erase our mistakes, so pencils have erasers is irrelevant.
And yes I know not to take it literally but it still isn’t in anyway true to life!!
I just think it’s the stupidest thing ever and it made me really annoyed lol. quotes are meant to inspire our day, not be rubbish!!
What do you think of this?

i don't like this quote as well. it's as if it is an excuse for making a mistake. well, some mistakes are unavoidable, but don't make this an excuse for being incompetent.
pencils may have erasers but as much as possible, write the correct answer. besides, pencil erasers don't erase the mark well enough to be unnoticeable.

i completely agree! yes everyone makes mistakes, but by accident. they should try not to. if everyone is giving the knowledge that making a mistake is tolerable, it leaves the door open for carelessness!

It's the pun that tends to put a smile on our face, a simple fact that would somehow make us think for awhile and then laugh about it assuming we realize the shallowness of it all, lol! I guess it is a mere simple approach for having a nice day.

When we write on something using the pencil, and makes mistakes, we can erase it as the pencil has an eraser, that is literally speaking. As compared to real life, there are instances that certain mistakes could be really compared to it, as you can correct it by erasing it, lol!

but you can't correct it by erasing it! thats why it really annoyed me lmao!

Well I think, the write of that quote meant to be funny.. Probably he wanted to say we should forgive others' mistakes... Or everyone should forgive everyones' mistakes... It has been expressed in the most lame way, I'm sure... Maybe, the writer was in a hurry to submit a number of quotes, or was getting late....
It is worth criticizing and funny, at the same time... :-)

Anyone would have felt the same thing... For example, we get our horoscopes updated everyday on a portal... Just for fun! So we have a good time when we log in... A few fun filled minutes... But we feel sad and deprived, when they forget to update the thing...
It is like something has become a habit, and we feel very annoyed, when we're deprived of that pleasure or if that pleasure is messed with...

haha thanks. i think it just rattled me so muc because i look forward to the little quotes and i like to see if the quote kind of predicts my day, and if i can encorporate it into my day.. but this one was like, what? That isn’t even true to life let alone anything else lol!

There are several ways mistakes can be handled. No doubt the saying talks about erasing. It has a deep meaning chicks.

You have to take it in a wider sense chicks. It does not rest with the word 'erasing' I agree with you a pencil does away with the mistake but I would look at it in a way that we can handle the mistake. Literally speaking you are right. Why don't you look at it my way and have a nice day

You know I have been told that taking things too literally is my downfall haha!

I entirely disagree. I don't think it has any deep meaning, or significance in life at all.
The quote is suggesting that we are all human, and are all subject to human error. Which is perfectly fine. However the quote also suggests that being subject to this human error is entirely fine, as, much like pencils have erasers to correct our writing mistakes, we too can correct or mistakes in life. Again, that is fine.. to an extent.
But to erase something is to delete it, make it so it was never there. And that is not something we can do with a mistake. Yes we can fix something, change something, apologise etc, but that mistake will always be remembered by us, or remembered by those around us that the mistake affected. So essentially our mistakes cannot be erased, so pencils having erasers is completely irrelevant to human beings making mistakes.
What would have made more sense would be to say, everyone makes mistakes, but that’s why we have tipex lol. covering up the mistake, but still semi-visible of what the mistake originally was lol

It made a lot of sense to me, it basically means we have another chance after every failures, nope you can't erase it literally, but you can do something for that mistake to be overlooked or forgotten or buried under so it won't be recognized anymore.
@chicksdigscars (5483)

yes but can you? what if the mistake is so big it cannot be overlooked, forgotten or buried? what if it has affected those around you to a point of no return?

I think I share your feeling toward the quote.I made mistakes in my life that I hope I can erase them but I just can't.I have to live with them ,or like people always say, learn from them. But still sometimes I can't help wishing some regretful things never happen.I guess its in my personality.Different people can get different things from a quote.

I have heard this quote many times, but never thought about it the way you have. Though some mistakes can be wiped away in our mind, but they are mistakes made that sometimes changes our life or lives of others.

but thats my whole point..
when we write something on paper, if we don't like it we can rub it out.. and its like it was never there, no one knows.
but when we make a mistake it life, it can't just be erased! it can't be rubbed out. it can damage and affect others round us, relationships etc.. and we can't erase that mistake from our own, or from others memories!

Our mistakes cannot be just erased or deleted from our lives, but we can always do something to make our lives better. It is like putting it this way, yes you made a mistake, and that no matter what you do, you could not turn back time to be able to undo it. But, you can straighten things out to make things better.
@chicksdigscars (5483)

but surely the quote suggesting that our mistakes can just be deleted for lack of a beter world is untrue.. they can never be removed from our memories, or the memories of those around us that the mistake affected. even if it was a funny mistake it will still be remembered, so it will never be erased. so i think the quote is stating a "life fact" that is untrue, completely lol!

Well, I personally, I would not be bothered just reading a quote of the day. In fact, however, emphasize the fact that, as you said in your discussions, sometimes not enough pencils and erasers to repair to human errors. Often these errors, in terms of getting things done, done physically, unfortunately you can not fix it!
However, beyond of what you find written every morning, I do not see why you need to get nervous about that. I worry instead of more serious things of life. For this I am facing at the moment a lot of family problems and more, to me, does not make me "it hot or cold it" read the fair quotation.

lol it didn't make me nervous.. or make me worry. i have a lot of problems of my own as well to be honest, which is probably why i am so easily rattled. this is a discussion site.. and that is what i wanted to discuss, people's opinions on this quote..

i often cried and didn't want to go to school.. i think it was because i hated being restricted in what i could and couldn't do.

Wow this really seems to bother you!I heard this quote like a million times and never thought about it this way.
I guess it means that you shouldn't make your past control your future.People take what they want from sayings, quotes. That's what I take from it.Even though I agree, the quote doesn't seem right in some way,I don't see why you got so annoyed about it.It's only a quote!
I guess it depends on what kind of mistakes,I belive everything in life happens for a reason, mistakes made, something good comes out of all of them.

i didn't get annoyed at the quote, i got annoyed at what the quote is trying to portray in the literal sense and how it is not true to life.

"Everyone makes mistakes , that's why pencils have erasers."
I kinda agree with this statement.Hold on for a sec before you argue, just listen to my opinion.
What do you when you make mistakes around people, you apologize...right??Why do you erase??
That's the meaning of the eraser.Something that erases your past errors, so that you can continue with a new and maybe a better one.It doesn't mean that you need to forget the past mistakes. That's why there's a saying learn from mistakes..by not forgetting, you'll know what to do if the same obstacle come again/
I hope this helps. ^_^

lol i do understand the general point, and i do agree somewhat, but the reason why i hate it sooo much, is we can erase a mistake on paper, and it’s like it was never there.. but we can’t erase a mistake in real life, because people have memories!
