"There's nothing to lose if we try". This excuse has caused my sister to run her newborn daughter to the emergency room last week. Her mother in-law has many superstitious beliefs. So, when my sister went to the grocery, the baby was left to her in-law's care. When she came home, she wondered what happened to the baby's mouth. The mother said, she wiped the baby's gum with the baby's dirt, as in p**p (DISGUSTING)!!
The reason why she did it? To prevent the baby from getting sick and uneasy when "teething time" comes. My goodness! My sister wanted to argue but then her husband said not to worry because their mom has been doing that to all of his siblings and claimed it's effective. Days after, the baby began to vomit and had stomach upset. She refused to drink breastmilk and then there was fever. It continued for 24hours so they decided to bring the baby to the hospital. Laboratory tests were done and it came out that the baby has Amoebiasis. A gastrointestinal infection from fecal oral transmission. Needless to say, the cause and who's to blame. When I heard the news about it, I really got mad and thought that maybe the mother in-law is insane.
I personally don't like superstitious belief, because they are completely no basis in our existence. How about you? Do you believe in those? What are your experiences to prove that they can help or what

I understand trying to appease the grandmother, but she has gone over the edge. The parents need to sit down with her, explain that her way is not the way they will be raising the baby and then never leave them alone together. I hope the baby gets better and this is a huge lesson.

This has happened to my wife's nephew. Her cousin's mother in law was also superstitious wherein her 1st born son was disallowed by her ma-in-law to be clothed other than wrapped in a diaper for the first 2 months causing the baby to catch colds and eventually had suffered from fever. Then the baby suffered from convulsion and is with cerebral palsy up to this time at the age of 31.

I also have some superstitious beliefs but you also have to use your brain and common sense! I mean, putting p**p in your baby's mouth? That is so un-hygienic! Next time, tell your friend that she should talk to her mother-in-law, not all beliefs should be followed especially if it's for the baby's welfare. Had that happened to me, I dont know what I could have done.

There should be general awareness that a new born infant to be handled with care. You should never leave new born babies in the care of old people because in their ignorance, they may practice weird ways. You should have washed the baby immediately and consulted a doctor, for new born are highly susceptible to germs in the first few months of their existence. We should not expose these babies to new germs, because there immune system is still developing.Let your husband get it clarified from a qualified pediatrician about child hygiene,so that he can explain to his mother.

I don't believe on superstitions. My mother is also had many superstitions when she's still alive. Although I don't believe it, I learn to tolerate it so as not to offend her.

Good Grief... Man, I have heard some really weird superstitions, but this one beats them all.... Where did it come from anyhow? From some sick mind, I'm sure... No civilized human and no animal either, in their perfect mental health, would ever think of anything sick like this... God help the baby! My heart goes for the young baby... They should get an order from the court which will keep the MIL of your sister away from the baby, in case if she knows more crazy things...
I'll pray for the baby.... Take that woman to asylum, man...

Hi friend, welcome to mylot. Sad to hear about this, but most of the elders are in this sort, they have faith with superstitious belief and they will do some unwanted things to the babies. My mother is also in this sort, she did a lot of things to my son at their birth, luckily my kids don't get any issues due to it as well as my wife don't take it wrong, but if this kind of belief gave any side effects and creates any problems like this, surely we must avoid it

Gosh, how can the sister's husband agree to that what the mother was doing. This is like crazy. some superstitions are crazy and stops people from thinking with their own brain. I hope it does not happen again. I have not come across anything crazy like this in my life. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

OMG, that's so sick! I've never heard of this superstitious belief. I told my grandma about this, because she's also superstitious but she told me that even she, an old-fashioned superstitious person knows that feces is waste and hazardous to health. For goodness' sake, that's a baby, whose immune system isn't even fully developed to fight bacteria and viruses. How could the husband be okay with that? I would be disgusted and upset as well and I will make sure that the in-laws would never touch my baby ever again.
