Have you noticed that a warning is taken as the end of things?

Dr. Oz came on The View and warned that a study shows that there are traces of Arsenic. If eaten once a day there is a 44% rise in the amount of Arsenic in the body. Then he goes to say that if you cook rice in more water it reduces the arsenic by 30%.30%?! Oh that's a relief. This is an example why I would rather not listen to all these studies and I should see Dr. Oz and run the opposite direction, lol!And many won't even hear the second part of the statement. They will just stop eating rice. And if you were just told to stop with the burgers and eat rice how would you feel about this? Me? I will keep eating rice when I feel like it and Burgers when I feel like it! But I'm rare I fear. So I ask you, do you avoid Every food that is mentioned in studies or have you just stopped listening to these studies?

Yes, you should always rinse rice or any such thing before cooking it. Like the medical reporter said on the news the other night it is important to eat a well rounded diet and not concentrate on just afew foods. In the Victorian era, "arsenic" ("white arsenic" or arsenic trioxide) was mixed with vinegar and chalk and eaten by women to improve the complexion of their faces, making their skin paler to show they did not work in the fields. Arsenic was also rubbed into the faces and arms of women to "improve their complexion".

I never had a well rounded diet and I'm not starting now! I make minute rice straight from the box or a packet of rice . So If I'm going to die , so be it!

I feel exactly the same way. If I was careful to follow each every one of these alerts I wouldn't be able to eat anything!

I don't usually listen. REmember a long time ago they said bacon causes cancer? Then it came up that you had to eat like 7 tons a year for whatever it was that caused the cancer in bacon to have any effect? How about cholestral in eggs...now they say you can eat them. We would starve if we listen to all that hooey!

Oh Sarah, as far as food goes, I'm no-rules guy... If I followed some food related thing, it was only because of family... Like not eating Non-veg on Mon, Thurs and Sat... When I started staying on my own, i gave it up... Now, I eat anything I like to.. No doctor has ever told me to stop eating something... And even if they do, I'm not sure how much I'll be able to follow...:-)... I'm a big time foodie...

I'm sure that if we really look closely at everything we eat, there would always be something there that's not good for us. And I sometimes think what good are all these warnings?! Just to make us not live anymore, and make us eat bland food that is supposed to be 'good' for us?
I think I stopped listening to all the warnings. I'd choose to live a little, and eat a little bit of everything.

The rice is our staple food,Then what we will eat? What if one day someone from nowhere warns that the one with which we replace rice contains carcinogen? I usually ignore what they said and do as usual.Grant that it is said that there are traces of arsenic, but I think the rice differs from place to place ,in addition it also depends on what kind of fertilizer the farmers have applied.

If we listened to all of these studies we would all STARVE! Everything now is bad for us according to all of these studies. It is crazy! It scares the poop out of people, most of the time for absolutely no reason at all. I do not listen to it at all, I have never bought into that type of stuff though. If it tastes good and I like it, I am going to eat or drink whatever it is. If I die early, so be it. At least I ate and drank what I liked while living. Lol. Some people will believe anything they hear!!

The trouble with these popular science programs is that they tend not to give very much information and somehow emphasise the sensational to the detriment of real, balanced advice.
Here is a link - I suspect, based on the same report - which puts things in a rather better light: http://www.dietsinreview.com/diet_column/09/concerning-levels-of-arsenic-found-in-rice-fda-conducting-full-investigation/
There is arsenic in a great deal of the food we eat, much of it in a form which is not dangerous (though we should still not eat too much of it). Sea-food, for example, contains quite high natural levels of arsenic but is NOT poisonous as a result!
The arsenic levels in rice (and other crops) are something which we need to be concerned about, however, because they are there due to chemicals which have been used on crops and so could have been avoided (or might be avoided it there were new, untreated land available to grow crops on).
In order to minimise the intake of arsenic from rice, one should:
1) Eat white rice rather than brown or wholegrain rice
2) Wash rice in several changes of water until the water runs clear (this is a good idea, in any case, since it helps to keep the grains separate and removes some of the high glycemic index starch).

The first commandment in this post goes against All those food Nazis that said Brown rice is better than white rice. This my whole point. If you say there is arsenic in Anything No one is going to eat it. Why would they want to? Many will get as frustrated as I would be if I listened and changed my diet just to find out the first commandment was all wrong. It makes me think I rather just eat what I want cooked the way I have Always done it and die happy than change everything every few weeks because the Food Nazis say this food is more harmful than the last diet item. I would be livid . And when I get angry I don't eat. But I think that is what they are after anyway! Just Stop eating! That way you will get no arsenic!

That's a big reason I try not to watch them either. I say try because when one of my family members or friends sees a commercial, and they are talking about one of the ailments I have, I am immediately told to watch or record the episode in question (I also get newspaper articles sent to me as well). I appreciate the thought. And I end up watching them because the family/friend inevitably gets a hold of me to quiz me about what they said. And so many of them say different things!
I feel like I can't keep up with their advice. One day you might need this vitamin, but sometimes it interacts if you eat this food, which you should eat every day, but only in small amounts. I just can't keep up!

I refuse to. When they changed their minds about eggs back in the 80's I knew they didn't know what they were saying and that I would rather die eating what I love!It seems like the only way not to have arsenic or any other toxin is to stop eating!

While its good to be aware of these things, they can also drive you nuts. But it is always smart for people to try and eat foods without all these chemicals. And with the internet, we can find out tons of information. Especially when it comes to our children. But the corporations will continue to do this kind of crap because they are making tons and tons of money.

We take overcare after being cheated or lost. No information can make us awake before we are harmed. Studies are made on how much arsenic exists or how much is the intensity we can consume as tolerable or safe. But we dont have scientific mind enough to follow or be cautious as per the warning made in the study.
Arsecnic is carcingenic poison. We should be away from it. Stay fine

I stopped listening to those studies a long time ago. And I have lead a good live. My illness have nothing to do with what I have eaten or stopped eating. My father, a biochemist, taught me whe I was a child about eating reasonable amounts and well balanced meals. The only time I didn´t do it, I put on 20 pounds that I have not been able to shed. It was when I quit smoking and changed the addiction for hard candy (I ate gross amounts of candy for over a month). But first there was a ban on butter, then marguerine was worse. I decided that if something gave cancer to mice, it had nothing to do with me. I am not a mouse! Of course a pound or two of hard candy a day is not healthy. But I´m sure there´s nothing wrong with eating some candy while watching a movie.

I think one should eat what his/her body is asking for. As long as you listen to your body you know what it needs. What is good for one person might be bad to an other person. And if it comes to cooking rice.. I always learned to cook it into a lot of water, I know other cultures do it the other way (since then I can cook it with less water as well). Might be the kind of rice you cook with less water is prepared differently? But if it comes to that many kinds of food are full with all kind of toxics (so is the air, are the drinks, etc).
I think people who are interested in this subject of cooking advices or health will listen to the whole message or search for more info. I don't avoid all the studies, some will make me start think or search for more info, but it doesn't mean I believe everything. Since if I start doing that there is nothing I can eat anymore. BTW I tried out food diaries for years and it never proved I am allergic against any food etc.. although I know I am. Same with kinds of food that should make me sick. I think this all also have to do with how strong your immune system is at that moment.
