Anyone that saw my article for tomatoes is aware how busy I have been getting the tomatoes off my counter and one way of using the tomatoes is homemade soup. This will be great in the cooler months. This year will have tomato and vegetable soups to enjoy. I'm thinking about making some potato soup this evening.
What is your favorite soup? What spices do you like to use making soup?

I like to make vegetable soup. What I add to it really depends on what I have on hand. However, I am a big fan of adding turmeric to just about everything. Garlic is another thing that I often add to food. Beyond that, it really depends on what happens to be in the fridge.

I love garlic and use it often in dishes. I'll admit have never used turmeric will have to check out the spice next time I'm shopping. Is it an expensive spice? What foods do you use this spice in now? Thanks for posting.

I'm grocery shopping this weekend, so will look for it. Thanks for posting. I'm glad to hear its not costly, as have a coupon to save on a spice.

No, it isn't expensive. I either use turmeric or curry powder, which contains turmeric.
I add it to pretty much any savory food. I will pour it into veggie dishes, sprinkle it over potatoes, slip a little into sandwiches. I love using it in tempeh dishes, and it works well with cheese.

Tomato soup is great! I also love it so much. For me, may favourite would be onion soup, I love onions and thinking that it's so great for health too, warm and comfortable to eat, I'd also like to eat corn and chicken soup, that's a truly good food to have when you suffer from cold.

Thanks for posting. I do plan to make some chicken soup, as every year somebody gets sick in my family. Chicken soup always makes me feel a little better no matter how sick I get that year. I have never made corn soup may consider it next year, as the price of corn is really high now.

I guess it really depends on how it is made. I like turkey noodle soup the best if it is made by a certain person I know. That would be my favorite ever. Then there are some places that make out of this world chicken soup. Overall, consistently, I would put clam chowder up there, but I don't know if you consider a chowder a soup. I just wish they would not put potatoes in it.

I'm considering making turkey noodle soup in November. Its the perfect time to buy a small turkey and there would be a lot of left overs. I love chicken soup; specially, if the chicken is white meat. Thanks for posting.

My sister grows her own tomatoes most summers and saves some for soup, sauce, etc. She cooks them up then freezes them in containers, taking out what she needs through the winter. She used to can but it's not practical with just herself to feed and she's too busy! Have you thought about that? You can use the tomatoes when you need them without waste and the texture doesn't matter so much in soups and sauces. And please don't tell me there's no room in the freezer because of all the processed frozen foods!
I like butternut squash soup. You puree the cooked squash with a pear--I use canned pears--then add some nutmeg and simmer it to blend the flavors. It's pretty as well as delicious. I also like my stepmother's vegetable soup which I'm unable to duplicate even though I've watched her make it and she gave me the recipe, must be the love she adds! My other favorite soup is a meatball stew that originally started out as a corn chowder recipe and I kept changing it. Now everyone loves it. Then there's navy beans and ham and, of course, homemade split pea soup--yum!!

You use to be right about the frozen dinners, but in 2010 I ended up in the hospital because of poor eating choices and made many changes including drinking more liquid. I started planting more fruits and vegetables in my yard, which lowers the fat grams and calories we eat each day.
This week I have picked blueberries, raspberries, lemons and tomatoes from my yard. The blueberries and raspberries disappear fast, as my daughter loves them. I may never end up making jam with raspberries this year, as they are gone so fast.
I agree the love of making a certain recipe can make a huge difference in the dish. Thanks for posting.

Wow, good for you living off the land! I also love soup in the cooler months and have already made some of my special recipes since we've had a blast of cold come through here. I made one of my favorite soups yesterday for dinner and I call it "Baked Potato Soup". I usually make my own chicken broth leftover from a baked chicken roaster and use that alongside milk and additional chicken bouillon for extra flavor; flour for thickener; baked potatoes with skins cut up; salt (if needed); pepper; crispy bacon; cheddar cheese. Now it's starting to sound like a loaded baked potato...this time I used some leftover carrots and peas but I usually add a bit of broccoli. What I find about soup is that I like it better the second day, marinating in its own juices and sometimes thickening even more to resemble a stew.

Wow, reading your post made me really hungry, as I enjoy soup left overs also. I do turn them into a stew, so the family thinks they are getting a different meal. Thanks for posting.

I froze a lot of my tomatoes that grew this past summer. I foumd nothing else grew as it was so hot and dry here. We still have containers of tomatoes in the freezer now. I use them in soups as well, I just take the skin off and throw them in stews, and soups.

I think the most important thing for me are the tomatoes, as the best ones are the ones picked that day. Next year I will put in one more plant, so there is enough to can a lot in one day. Thanks for posting.
