Unholy matrimony

There's been a lot of absolute rubbish spoken recently on the subject of gay marriage, with some idiot suggesting (and it's been picked up by homophobes the world over) that this will lead to bestiality. Ludicrous, but what can you do.
Nevertheless, as I lay napping this afternoon (I had an old man moment) the following scenario crept into my mind.
"Do you, Basil, take this sheep Baaaaaaarbara, to be your lawful wedded ewe?"
"I do".
"Do you, Baaaaaaaaarbara, take this human, Baaaaasil, to be your lawful wedded husband?"
"Baaaaaaaaa" (I do).
"Then under the power vested in me, I pronounce you man and sheep. You may butt the bride".
Baaaaaah, humbug.

I have heard people trying to draw a correlation between homosexuality and pedophilia, bestiality, necrophilia, etc., and I think that is about as ridiculous as saying that allowing homosexual marriage endangers heterosexual marriages. I just do not see the connection between any of these except for the fact that two of the examples involve marriage ... well, three if you include your matrimonial example, and I have heard of people being married posthumously, although I am pretty sure the marriages were not consummated posthumously not to mention the fact that they all occurred between a man and a woman - oh wait, there you have it *facepalm* the idea of homosexual marriage caused heterosexuals to engage in bestiality and to become necrophiliacs, which in turn endangers heterosexual marriage.

I have also heard people saying that a marriage is supposed to be "between a man and a woman for procreation of the species", which is basically saying that if you do not want or cannot have children, then you should not get married, even if you are heterosexual, although you will not hear those actual words coming from their mouths not to mention that if (by following their logic) you suggest such a thing they will deny it.
I also hear a lot of "Bible" talk being thrown around regarding marriage, but the simple fact is that marriage, while it can be done in a religious ceremony, is a legal matter completely separate from religion. In fact, a person can be married in a religious ceremony and it will not be legal until it is also performed in a legal ceremony ... I know a couple of people that had to have both, because the church official did not have jurisdiction in the place where the religious ceremony was being performed. Similarly, there are churches that will not acknowledge a legal marriage if there has not been a religious ceremony performed. Therefore, the idea of marriage and religion are two separate issues, so the fact that your religion does not support homosexual marriages is irrelevant.

That is what so many fail to realize. The act of marriage is nothing but a contract. I would love to marry my partner, but it is not going to affect our feelings for each other if we dont. It does affect how we have to do things to make sure we are protected. A married couple does not have to jump through the same hoops that we do. They are automatically protected.

Yep. You clarified the connection. LOL
It just amazes me that people make these accusations when it is documented in research that the majority of people guilty of the aforementioned perversions are not gay.
If someone can ever show me how exactly my relationship with my partner makes their marriage less valid or endangers it, then I might reconsider my stance on things.

Does that mean we have a baaaahtered bride, then? Actually, it could put a whole new meaning on the word 'dogging' as well.
Can I just say that my husband's Christian name is Basil, although he prefers to be known as Tony - who wouldn't? However, he has not, and is never likely to, get married to a sheep. Then again, he's stright, so that's probably why.
The whole thing is just ridiculous. I know a lot of gays, because my daughter is a lesbian, and they're a damn sight more faithful and moral than a lot of the heterosexuals I know.
Where do they get this crap from? I know there's a line in the Bible about a man lying with another man being an abomination or something, so I suppose these people have just dragged up all the abominations they can think of, and decided the gays must be doing it.
It's not exactly the approach one would expect from a Christian - and most of the people who are coming out with this garbage are either Christians or Muslims. I'm a Christian myself, but these bigots make me ashamed.

They may think that they are Christian Sandra but they are not Christian. I have always thought that iwhen we face a judgement that there will be only one question our God may ask of us. He will say . 'How well did you love my people?'. That is it. Not a God who smotes people down etc because this is why Jesus came - to show us love and tolerance and forgiveness. Blessings

What they do is take single verses from the Bible. They do not take entire passages in context. The context you cited is referring to I believe sodom and gamorrah and adultery in general. I am not 100% on my scriptures and I am sure someone can tell me if this is not the passages about said towns.
I will probably get flamed for this next comment, so I will preface it by stating that I am a spiritual person. I believe in an almighty power. I also believe that he is a loving God, regardless of who you are, after all the Bible teaches us to love.
Now for the comment:
The Bible is a teaching tool, much like Aesops Fables were. Do I truly believe that everything that was written in the fables happened? Was there an actual tortoise and hare that raced? No. It is meant to teach us a virtuous lesson. The same with the Bible. I am not saying that everything in the Bible is a fable, but it is a moral compass that should be used to teach us. I dont believe that it is meantto be taken word for word, simply because we dont know what the original wording was. All we have are translations that were done by man. Man could have put his own spin on it when he was translating it, just as people do today.
Sandra, Kudos to you for your views. Your daughter is a lucky lady. As far as us gay folks go, most of us are faithful in our relationships. I have been with my partner for almost 10 years. One day, I will marry her and live happily ever after. :)

I have always said that the Bible is a collection of inspirational stories, rather than the word of God. As long as people live a good life, where they harm nobody and help everyone where possible, they are doing what God wants them to do. And I don't believe that He wants homosexuals to be treated in any way differently from anyone else, because He loves us all.

The purpose of marriage is 'that the couple's parents can be satisfied that their kid turned-out good,' as seen in the tradition of "asking the parents if one can make their child one's spouse."
If the parents don't care, the marriage is good. Not being a parent myself, I can only imagine why they would care and would not allow the marriage between Baaaaaaaaaaaasil and Baaaaaaaaaaaarbara.
