Youless, so far i haven't seen any doctor who is a smoker yet. If i ever meet any smoker doctor, i am sure won't have the interest to come to see that doctor anymore. Doctors are supposed to promote healthy lifestyle and good example in front of their patients. If himself is a smoker, how that doctor able to help smokers to quit their smoking habit. I just hope that my family doctor is not a smoker.

I have to admit in all the forty years I have been going to see a doctor I can't honestly recollect any of them smoking! Unless of course they do it out of surgery hours, but I have never encountered them in the street smoking or having a crafty one outside the surgery. I would think poorly of them if they did smoke, after all they have to practice what they preach! And it would be hypocritical of someone in this standing to be smoking when they are telling their patients to give up smoking as its bad for their health!

I think you are right!I respect doctors because they value lives. If someone smokes, I will never think he's a doctor.

Hi!
I had an occasion to be treated by one Doctor who was a smoker.
He did not have a roaring practice and ultimately his clinic was shut down.
It isn't fair on the part of a Doctor to be a smoker. He just can not set an example for his patient and can not advice his patient to quit smoking.

Well, if it is just a way in order to release their pressure at work, then I think they should do it privately and that nobody should ever see them doing it. It is because that we look up high on them because they are the one who should protect us from diseases, so they should also be a role model to their patients and to people who will see them.

I would be turned off. I mean, if this doctor wouldn't even have the concern for his own health, how else can I expect him to exercise care and concern for the health of his patients? For me smoking, aside from being unhealthy, is dirty: the smell of the smoke, discolored hands and lips and stained teeth, they all spell dirty to me. As a doctor, and as called for by their profession, I would expect better than that.

My grandfather is actually a doctor and he smokes a pack per day. I think it is normal as addictions should not be confused with profession. He was a smoker before he became a doctor and he couldn't forgive his addiction. But at the same time it is not that the doctors who smoke should encourage smoking. They should strictly not recommend their patients to not to smoke.

I think most doctors do not smoke. I think only one in thousand of a doctor would smoke. I think it is not good for doctor to smoke as they have to lay example for others and I think may be the doctor is smoking to relieve the tension once in a while.

Hi youless, it's no problem if the doctor who addicted to smoke doesn't smoke while he is on duty in hospital or during his consultation hours in the clinic. Smoke is not healthy especially the secondhand smoke would cause great harm to the people around. Hoping that all the chain smoker doctors realize this and quit from smoking as soon as possible so as to be respectable and authentic professional doctors who always take care of both his and the patients health
Have a nice day

I remember having teachers when I was young that smoked and they would smoke in the lounge or whatever it was until it was banned. But I dont think I have ever seen a doctor smoke. I'm sure there are plenty that do though. Although they know the health risks as well or more then we do they probably picked up the habit many many years before and have trouble quitting.

I have never in my sixty years seen one doctor who smoked. If one did I bet he is an older one and probably just unable to stop. And it could be, as you said, that it releases their working pressure. Most doctors are very good role models and would never think of taking up such a nasty habit.

Well if the doctor is not advocating the no smoking sign..then it will be fine for me as he is just a person too plus we never know the reason behind it, it might be personal addiction for him too.
But it is a doctor that advocates the no smoking thingie and has signs all over the office that says no smoking and smoking is bad for the health and goes out and smoke then that doctor is a hypocrite for me.

I have few doctors who smoke, but I haven't got the chance to ask them why they smoke since the know very well that smoking is dangerous to health.
Of course, I feel odd seeing a doctor smoking- but all I can do is wonder they smoke and they advised their patient to stop smoking.

You are right.Doctors smoke and I have not seen any doctor who does not smoke,my family doctor included.Actually alopathy is not a way of life. It's not a philosophy. It's just a therapy. In contrast, the Ayurvedic practitioners live a disciplined life. They get up early in the morning and live a holistic life.Ayurveda is a philosophy which advocates natural life style.Doctors,on the other hand, preach against smoking, but may be chain smokers themselves.

It makes us think that doctors know much better on how to take good care of their health than those who are engaged in other lines of business. It seems not if a doctor smokes. I also see some doctors smoking when I was in the hospital. The first thought of this scenario comes to my sight is why the doctor is smoking, then I don't usually give it another thought. Anyway, it could be different reasons for their smoking, though. I don't ever smoke, and nor will I however stressful my work is. Have a good day, youless.

I can't trust a doctor who smokes. I mean how can I trust someone to take care of my health if he himself can't take care of his own. Imagine how he could risk his health and can't control his addiction despite his knowledge that smoking is bad for his health. How could he qualify as a good doctor if he can't show good testimony to his patients. So, if a doctor smokes, I believe he is the foolish person in this world. Why? Because of all people he should be the one to know how smoking becomes bad. If he knows and still can't avoid then he is really foolish and the fact that he is someone who takes care of the health of people makes him even more foolish because he can't even apply to himself that knowledge.

Truthfully I would not want my doctor to smoke, I mean if there taking care of you and telling you how to take care of yourself and then a week later you see your doctor standing outside Walmart with a smoke then what are you gonna thing " Omg, he says that I should stop smoking but look at him! "
