Blindly Following Republicans vs Democrats

United States

The political party that I follow isn't relevant, and I will try to stay neutral for the sake of the conversation. Why does it seem like so many people blindly follow their political party? Instead of people that will be the best man or woman for the job. If we spent half as much time working together than the time we talk/argue/run a smear campaign against "the other guy", we could accomplish so much. Imagine what good could come of the money spent running campaigns against each other and use it for good reasons such as helping fund cancer research or finding a cure for aids.

I am always put in the position to use the old saying of having to vote for the lesser of the evils. I am conservative in general in that I want smaller government, lower taxes, less government spending and waste, less fraud in government programs, etc. I am not religious so I am not persuaded by what many religious people are persuaded by. I think that one big future problem that the world faces is over population but having said that I can't vote for the Democrats even though they are for birth control, etc. just on that one issue and actually some of their programs encourage population growth more that their other issues reduce it. The Democrats are more responsible for big government, wasteful spending, etc. and loss in freedoms; so because of those reasons I am usually against them. Do I think that all the money spent on elections is a big waste? Yes, I do, but that is not going to change.

W Bush did more wasteful spending and took away more of our freedoms. The sooner most conservatives acknowledge what a nightmare of a president he was....the better. I guess I should thank him, it hadn't been for 8 years of his and cheney's BS I probably would still be a status quo republican. But he caused me to take a good hard look at him and the whole republican party.

Let's see...the war in Iraq. The patriot act. The bail outs. The crony capitalism. War profiteering. His abuse of executive privilege. Water boarding. The debt. I could go on and on. I had some major policy issues with Bush. He was a nightmare to me. But I am assuming that I am a more libertarian leaning conservative than you are.

What freedoms did he take away? If we had only the Bush level of wasted spending, we'd have about $5 Trillion dollars less in debt. I'll take that over Obama's $1.6 Trillion dollar deficit any day. But he wasn't a nightmare. The sooner the left acknowledges that Obama is worse, the better. If Bush were to run for office this year, I'd vote for him without any doubt.

I am completely digusted with the political system as we have it right now. It is beyond broken. I wish more people saw that. The two parties have a nice little racket going. They keep people divided and fighting each other so they dont look at "their" side closely to see how bad it is or what kind of candidate they are backing. They demonize each other, and use fear mongering to channel "their supporters" to attach the other side. When it reality both sides are just as corrupt and bad. Both are bought and paid for by the same people and corporations. Those people figured out a long time ago that backing only one pony in the race wasn't a good bet. If you own both ponies, then whoever wins...you still have "your guy" in the white house or other elected offices. They love keeping everyone attacking each other because we dont think look at the big picture and go " oh wait a minute...my guy is a corrupt jerk too, he's gotta go"...or better yet...my party says it stands for honesty and intergity....but their actions show they don't...i shouldnt support them anymore. Can you imagine what would happen if the american public woke up in mass and decided they weren't going to support candidates bought and paid for, that were into crony politics and back door deals? they would all loose their jobs...they don't want that. Better to keep us hating the "evil republicans" or the "evil democrats". They gotta keep us divided and in fear of the other side. Most people have not figured out neither side is good guy. Or they use the well my side is not as bad as the other. Yeah...well a pile of poo is a pile of poo no matter if it has a r or d beside it...so you are still supporting a pile of poo. I try to have hope that one day people will truely realize how bad each party has gotten and will force them to change or leave the party all together. Stop letting the tail wag the dog!!! But every election season I see it. People all over the place saying their pile of poo is going to save the country while the other sides pile of poo is going to destroy the country. When both sides are destroying this country. Every election I can remember I hear "this is the most important election in our life time....you gotta vote for this candidate or the country is ruined." Fearmongering at it's best. All to get you to vote for a candidate who sucks because if not the "country is at an end". I think a lot of people end up voting for a candidate they don't like because they feel trapped by the two part system. They feel they HAVE to pick one from the two major parties or they are "throwing their vote away". The two major parties want you to keep believing that with all your heart too. Having viable third or fourth parties would be their worst nightmare. Until that mind set changes in the mass population we will keep having hand picked candidates by corporate america that once in office will do what is in their big donors' bests interest and not ours. We get the government we deserve....taking a look at our current elected officials in most offices and the people in charge of the major parties....that is a very scarey reality. We really deserve this? Wow...we must really suck to deserve this. Think of it like dorathy and the wizard of oz....once she looked behind the curtain and saw there wasn't a wizard but an old man conning everyone, he lost power and left. He never was a wizard but he sure had everyone in oz conned. Both parties have the country conned. Until people look behind the curtain and realize it...nothing will change.

You are absolutely correct and I agree with you 100%. I think people are so blinded by their parties that it gets rather ridiculous. The current U.S. election I have argued against Obama and Romney and stated how both could run their campaigns better. However the fear tactics keep anyone from voting sensibly! It has gotten so bad that you can't tell someone who supports one party something because they can only hear and/or read what they need to read. Like should they hear or read anything else the world would end. Let alone both parties attack less intelligent voters. They insult their voters, they call them idiots, and not one person in their party can see it. They are fed to believe voting for such and such will mean a better economy and more, but you are right with all the corporations that back them, they aren't looking out for the people. Once in office, they will back their contributors. Interesting food for thought, there is a conspiracy that any president who goes against the federal reserve (which may actually get the country back on track if they properly dismantle it) gets assassinated... or there is an attempt to assassinate them. It is kind of scary and should it be true, it means there is no democracy and people voting is just a "dog and pony show" so to speak. I think the people should fight to change the law to allow third party people on the tickets rather than the democractic-republican party (yes I fully believe it is one party so they can stay in power and help their "friends" who donate millions to them) that way maybe we can get politicians who care for the people.. just maybe.

They only way it is going to change is when people change how they vote. Too many people are party creatures. Honestly the elections are a dog and pony show with the two party system. Look at both parties top contributors...they are the same coporations. So which ever one gets elected it is the same corporations calling the shots. Not just president but also all federal elected officials. All are bought and paid for and it's not by the american public. One some people want so badly to believe "their" side is good and the other "evil"...because it makes them feel better than looking at the truth. That both parties have become so corrupt that neither one is good anymore. I had not heard that about the federal reserve. Ron and Rand Paul, Gary Johnson and a bunch of other politicans better watch their backs if it is true. Ben Bernanke is a lot of the reason we are in so much debt and our economy is a mess. Someone needs to fire him and hold him criminally accountable.

It's a lovely thought that ill spent money by partys could be redirected to worthy causes but sadly political partys are nothing more than businesses in it for the money. In the UK the political partys are run by the hoi polloi who care not a jot for the common voter. Sadly we have to try vote for a shiny turd.

I personnel do not like anything the democrat party is standing for right now. So my only option is to go republican. Until the system changes enough that a third party can arise without weakening either of the two, this is what we have. It is not perfect, but it is the best system in the world today. Can you come up with a better one and make it work? So we are stuck with what we got. The conservatives and libertarians are trying to reform the republican party. While on the democrat party has many parties, including the socialist and communist parties that are influencing them greatly.

I used to say that people were ignorant and that was why they blindly follow. I have since came to another conclusion. It isnt ignorance. It is laziness. It requires a little thought to research things and draw your own conclusions. We are so flooded with information, true or false, by the internet, 24 hour news channels, etc. Each of which will pick an issue and exploit it. One out-of-context statement will usually be spun as the gospel truth. People are not going to put forth the effort to truly consider what was said/done and understand it. It is much easier to take what someone else says and turn it into your own belief than to think about something and come up with your own.

That's a good point, but I also think many people just do not have the stomach to deal with all the nonsense that goes on in politics. The problem with that its like procrastinating on your own life issues to point where its to late and things start collapsing around you.
