Disappointed by Breaking Amish

September 23, 2012 6:56pm CST
So, when I saw the advertisements on TLC for the new show Breaking Amish I was stoked. The medical clinic I work for treats a particular disorder common among the Amish, so I have a vested interest. I watched the first episode and there were some things that contridicted what I have learned about the Amish. By the second episode, I was convinced that something was up. These individuals were too quick to jump into situations that true Amish would have hesitated on. Of course by now there is all of this information floating around online about their social media profiles proving they're not Amish. Two of the cast members already have a child together. One of them is divorced. The list goes on. Now TLC has issued a statement that they will address these rumors in upcoming episodes. I'm bummed because I really wanted to like this show. Has anyone else been watching?

I have not seen "Breaking Amish". I have only seen the previews. I have seen news shows about Amish leaving the order. They do it in the middle of the night and right away start wearing "english" clothes! When I have seen the Breaking Amish I see those Amish still in their traditional dress! Also if a Amish child goes out to experience the world when they are teenagers,Amish parents don't like it but they don't stop them! It seems to me these so called Amish on this show aren't true Amish like you said! I think this show is fishy, too!

I have seen an episode of Out of the Order on National Geographic and find that to be much more believable. And it's true that most Amish have a Rumspringa where they get to go out and experience the outside world without being shunned by their families. But this Breaking Amish show is just not for real. Having said that, I am going to watch the new episode tonight. Am I dumb or what? :)

I have not seen the show. I plan to. I am interested in other cultures including the Amish. I like to learn and take what is good and interesting from other cultures and bring it into my family. I wonder what it will be like. I hope I like it. I have seen movies and documentaries so hopefully I will. I hope they are truly Amish as I believe most reality shows are not truly reality.

I am interested in other cultures as well. But if you're looking for a real perspective on the life of the Amish, do count on this show to give you what you're looking for. I watch it purely for entertainment at this point, not education.

hi all earned it does not sound to me like they are re lly Amish as the Amish I knew do stick to their laws and rules quite strictly. I have not seen it but it sounds like a waste of time to me.there were a colony of Amish where I used to work and they really clung to their rules strictly too.

You're right, the Amish are very strict. That's why I started questioning these people when they were so eager to go out and get a tattoo or buy sexy underwear or try out to be a model. These are not things people would do within days of leaving their communities. But it is a trainwreck and I cannot look away :)
