Cat as the Main Ingredient of Siopao....

Philippines

In the Philippines, there is an urban legend that some vendors use cat meat in making siopao. The story tells that one of the restaurants in Quiapo, Manila City was caught throwing cut heads and body parts of street cats. Some versions also said that they actually saw them cooking it. This urban legend began way back during the Japanese time when there was a scarcity of meat and lots of cats on the street. :)

I've never heard of that one. I've heard about some street vendors in Jakarta who use rat meats. True or not, it's enough to make me think twice about eating at such places...

This was the legend my father told me when i was still young and i still don't know if this is true or not. I am a cat lover and i can't think of eating "siopao" with a cat meat on it that's why since i was a child, after i heard the story, i am not eating "siopao".

Yeah I have been hearing this kind of story a long time ago. But so far none has been caught doing that. So for now I would say that it remains an urban legend and no evidence but all rumors.

I don't know if that really true, friend. I don't like to earn siopao and didn't tried to find out the truth about it. I think that believed is a story telling a lie. Because if that really the case why there are still many cat on the street?

Probably true, probably not, but with the Chinese's track record using dangerous ingredients/materials just gain profit? Well, it is highly probable. I had a friend who's family business is selling bakery ingredients. Among them were powdered milk. He said that milk used in scramble is for animals and the cheese used in buy 1 take 1 burgers on the street are expired already because it's cheaper. I don;t know why they're selling those. Really, expired cheese and animal grade milk! but guess what, he's Chinese.

I have heard of this story even when I was younger and actually, some believe the story. Personally, I have not seen any siopao made of cat. And if you try it, you could actually taste that the meat used in siopaos are either pork or beef meat, depends on the flavor.

I heard that story to, but my mom and uncle used to tell me that one Chinese restaurant really makes use of cat as the ingredient for their siopao. That is why I never tried eating on that restaurant.

QUITE contrary! I'm of Filipino decent and my Lola (grandmother in tagalog)uses pork. Which in the Philippines they will use either pork or chicken because that's what they can afford. Filipinos are not like Chinese and eat cat.
