I had an argument with my son {the second to the eldest} as to making my own account on facebook, lol! I told him I'm too old for such kind of social network and i do not feel comfortable making an account. He states that it would make me aware of where he is and what he has been doing, and i just explained that we talk everyday and there is always the cell phone where i could send my messages at anytime to know where he is or if he needs for me for help. Anyways, the argument went on and on, and to make it short, do you think i need to make an account on facebook at my age?

It sounds like your son is a bit outspoken. I have had an account on Facebook for several years and it has been fun. I have day to day communication with people I probably wouldn't have if it weren't for the site. My BFF that lives in Oklahoma has a real cheap cell phone and to talk to her on the phone is frustrating because I can't understand her. SHe is online now and we visit or 'poke' on FB. And my granddaughter is 20 now and I doubt I would hear from her very often if it weren't for FB. There are alot of fun games on the site too. I would atleast check it out for awhile.

I would really have one. Texting or calling on the phone would be really expensive in keeping up with my friends and family. Thanks for the response.

First of all I don't know your age, but I was feeling the exact way before I did it ...I am 63 and I have a FB account..I am happy that I made the decision to do it...I feel connect to distant family for sure..I've even connected with people i went to school with and haven't seen in 30 years,,I also take advantage of all the free games available to you on fB...I would miss the games more than anything if I lost fb...it also is an excellent reminder of when there are events you might want to attend and it reminds you of birthdays of friends and others in case you forget... I like it..but if you are not comfortable doing so, then by all means "don't do it"...

Having such an honest response, i think you have given me enough reason to join. I would surely try it and hopefully get in touch with long lost friends or classmates from the distant past, lol! Again, my friend thank you for your response, really appreciate it.

You are so very welcome...I am sure you will become to like it if for nothing else but to reach out to others..you can also send private messages to others as well. if you don't want everyone reading what you have to say to someone... Just make sure that you do not add personal information when you make your profile...such as your address, you can put the state if you like but not the city...don't add your phone number either... Enjoy and keep me posted...I want to know that I steered you in the proper direction... GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

If your son want's you to, why not? You don't have to do anything on facebook other than look at it once in a while. You don'y have to post and share your life. I'm in my 50 and have an account.

Yeah, i think you're right! If i can't beat them, join them (my sons), lol! i just feel awkward being at 50 (no offense meant though since we are in the same age bracket) to make an account, but probably making one would make my son feel I took his advice too and appreciate his concerns. Thanks!

My dad is in his 90's and has an account. Age is only a number.

I think you should have an account on facebook. Nowadays, without an account on facebook seems to be looked as out-of-date. Creating an account on facebook is very simple just for several minitues. And you can keep up with all your friends on net in time. It's very interesting. I think you would enjoy it very soon. You can have a try.

Yeah, that's one reason, being outdated, lol! Regarding age and status in life, some sort of contemplation. Anyways, thanks for the response.

Hi obe212003,it seems that your son only wants you to join facebook so that you will be able to see his activities like what he has been doing and where he has been since he would upload all his pictures there, but if it is uncomfortable for you to create an account on facebook then don't.It is still up to you to decide if you want or not.I guess your son wants you to be updated:)

Being updated personally would be best for me as we can see each other everyday, lol! At any time, i could see the pictures he uploaded or what his friends have been posting on his wall, how? He uses my computer and i can log into his facebook with the autosave password and username features of the firefox, lol!

Firstly, facebook is not just for chatting and monitoring your son's activites, a lot more than that. You can get to come across lot of information/Videos posted by people you have networked with, Definitely age is not a limit to know things in your life.

Yeah, the reason behind my son's insistence of making one is to monitor his status, photos and each everytime he logs in. It is not the age factor, but rather a personal matter of course that I have explained above. Anyways, thanks for the response.

If you don't feel comfortable then don't do it. You could set one up and make all your settings private and make him your only friend, at least until you are more comfortable. You do have that choice also.

I am really uncomfortable, but i am doing it. Most of my friends are not into facebook, and that is why i am contemplating on doing so as they would be making fun of me with regards to some sort of "machismo" issue, lol! Honestly, I am going to have one. Thank you for the response.

I'm 67 and opened a facebook account about a year ago. I did it because some of the sites I earn money on post there and I get bonuses, but I've grown to like it to keep in touch with my grandkids and to play the games. Its also nice to get the birthday reminders of my friends and family, who often post some interesting tidbits and funny stuff to brighten my day. The choice is yours.

Not if you're that set against it. I like Facebook. It's a link to family and friends you don't get to see often. It's a link to making new friends. People of all ages use Facebook. Somethings I may never had known about if not for FB news feeds. I'm not willing to let age be an issue at anything I want to do. I'm not a spring chicken either.

I'm actually not against it, just feeling uncomfortable if my old friends would know about it, lol! Yes, you're right age is not an issue here, it i just don't that itch to have one, lol! Planning on having one as soon as possible, thanks for the response.

Yes, i think that would be exciting to see, being able to be updated from family and friends out of the country. I would have to admit that age really is not a factor, and i guess my son would be happy to know that i would be having one soon. Thanks for the response.

Age has nothing to do with Facebook. lol. But if you do not feel comfortable with it, you do not need to get one. I personally love Facebook. I do believe it is something worth checking out. You could keep in contact with old friends from high school, or even get people to refer to mylot for more income! ha. I recomend you at least give it a shot, and if you don't like it, you can always delete it.

I am 51 and I have a facebook account, a myspace account, meetme (formerly MyYearbook) account. I have friends in their seventies that have an account, in fact one of my friends uploaded some photo's of me, my mom and my siblings, photos that none of us have copies of. It was a joy seeing those lost photos. FaceBook is a good way to get together with friends and family that you have been out of touch with. You can chat, share photo's, and also meet new people. I'm not going to say you need to make a facebook account, that is your call, I'm just saying you're never to old. If you feel uncomfortable don't, but if you decide to try it, warning, it can be addictive.

Going to try, and still uncomfortable as you have mentioned that i could get addicted, lol! Anyways, i got more than enough reasons to make one other than my son's suggestion. Thank you for your response.

my father has one to keep in touch with his friends from other countries. If you don't have a reason to make one, why to do it, it will waste some minutes from your life making it.

You son is right; you many not need one, but you could certainly benefit from one in a number of ways. Facebook is a good way to keep in touch with people you are too busy to keep in touch with and vice versa.

Really? Most of my friends would just e-mail me and that's quite fine for me as it is being more personal, or a live chat through YM would be more real for me, more so if it would be on skype with video call. Anyways, thanks for the response, really appreciate it.

You definitely should! I did and I am finding out a lot of stuff about my daughters, and got in touch with friends from my country of origin, after many years.I enjoy certain things that I subscribe to,( videos and pictures of animals,jokes...).The only thing you should be careful ,just let friends see your page.Do not go "public".Your son wants you to do this, because their generation prefer to communicate this way,and they post pictures and comments on Facebook,so you can see them, and they do not have to make an effort to produce them separately for you!!!!So as they say "Go with the flow!!!"

Hi obe! I think you should have to. This way you will not be just listening from others who are talking about this site. You can also use fb in order to invite your frineds to join myLot. That is aside from the benefit your son told you. Have a nice day!

Yeah, i could see your point, but most of friends (my age) are more into work-related activities and have no time for the facebook thing, lol! we communicate most of the time by email, YM or phone, and that's about it. Thanks for the response..

My grandmother is past 60 and has a facebook. But to be honest if you feel uncomfortable about it. DON'T. But you could try it for maybe a week or so and if you don't like it you can delete it(: Sorry you have to argue this with your child. Most children have to argue with their parents NOT have a facebook lol

Yeah, the arguments are fine, very informative, as i seem to find a way to bridge the gap between us. Although i'm not really comfortable making an account with facebook as a way of communicating with him, lol! Anyways thanks for the response, happy mylotting!
