playing AND learning..

It was my best friends son’s 1st birthday yesterday and we attended his party.
What made me laugh was that after 3 hours of running around with screaming kids, eating chocolate cake and sweets etc, we were more tired than the kids.
It was great to see the type of toys that kids have now-a-days.. it isn’t just about fun, but it is about learning!
For example, my partner and I got the little boy a turtle that he can sit on. He can bounce up and down on the turtle kind of like a bucking bronco.. but the handle that he holds on to, sings songs, counts numbers, and has shapes and colours, which I think is fantastic!
I’m glad that entertainment is also about learning these days, because when I was a child [which wasn’t that long ago, I’m only 25] .. most toys were for playing purposes only!
What do you think of this?

These type of toys are essential for today's kids as technology is ready and waiting to offer them everything on a platter which deprives them of the kind of learning opportunity we all enjoyed when we were children. I don't envy them at all!.

When I look at today's kids who hardly need company to amuse themselves I feel we were better off.

I always try to purchase toys that also include learning, I feel like I am getting 2 benefits in one.. Unfortunately as children get older, they are more concern with play. My son is 10 and loves all kinds of games, and I don't mind, some games he plays online are educational, like he recently made an online account on history.com and I am sure besides having fun, he will also learn something.

I do like the current focus on education as well as play and entertainment. That is not only evident in the toys but also in books and children's television. Cartoons now are not only focused on entertainment but also on education, and they try to make learning fun, which is always a good thing. In many of the cartoons there are people that ask how things make a person feel or how a person thinks something should be done and things like that not only to make children think about how others feel but also to let them figure out ways to solve a problem. Of course, this is really what parents should be doing with their children while watching television, in my opinion, but it seems that there are not a lot of parents that actually do it.

That was the same way that I was raised and the same way I raise my children. In fact, I think that the only time my children watched any television before the age of two or three years old is when I was putting in an interactive children's video to do with them ... you know, like the singing and dancing ones to help with speech, memory and coordination. Unfortunately, I know some parents stick their babies in front of the television and let them watch it for hours at a time just to keep the babies quite and occupied.
On the other hand, I do really like the baby chairs like the ones from Baby Einstein where you can put the baby in the seat and the baby has a bunch of learning activities at his or her fingertips ... I think that is far more amusing and educational for a baby and will keep him or her entertained for longer than the television ever could.

well yes i agree about the tv aspect. we were often plonked infront of the tv whilst my parents were making dinner or doing the ironing and things like that, but when my parents were free i often remember colouring in and building things with my mum and dad, and going places etc.. i only ever remember the tv as a way of distracing us so they could get things done, never as a constant!

Educational toys have been the aim of a lot f toy manufacturers for the last 10 years. And I think that was a wise idea to make coz a child don't just get to enjoy the toys but also learn from them. Products like those of Leap Frog and VTech has tremendously changed the traditional toys that we grew up with.

Oh completely. Even the television shows kids watch now-a-days. I thought the characters were just talking gobbley and I couldn’t understand why no one spoke real words, it was all noise and sounds, but I have since found out that scientists have proven that those noises, that we would wonder how on earth that teaches our children anything, actually teaches them more than hearing “grown-up” words they don’t understand.

People is trying to get better and better. The business people know that. They understand what people like us need. what a family would need. that is why they even come out with toys that can actually be utilized for children learning too. Parents who want their children or babies to learn something earlier, they would buy these toys.

Yes the toys today are very advanced and gives a chance to learn what we used to learn in class one. i am glad that toys like this are made and makes it easier for the kids to grasp things fast. i have a story which is about a boy. When this boy was a child, his granny used to read him a book. Though he did not understand anything what was written but he did listen. Later when this boy grew up, he had remembered the whole book by heart. .. That is why we need to teach them at an early stage so that they remember what they learnt. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead

my partners nephew was the same.. he was able to read a book and read the entire book from cover to cover, when in actual fact he can only read about 50% of the words, he had actually memorized the book from it being read to him :)

I have a 15 month old son and I love how these toys are so stimulating and can help with his logic skills. But even so old toys were not always just for play purpose only. A rattle could help the child learn to grasp on to an object. A stacking tower and blocks help a child learn to stack objects on one another. Even a pot can help a child learn that if he/she bangs on it will make a noise.(Cause and effect)

oh yes I understand that learning toys have been around for a long time, and other toys that weren't entirely learning toys could still stimulate a child, but I'm talking about the likes of soft teddys, and dolls, that don't really do anything by way of learning..
