Guys, I have also been studying japanese for quite some time now. I wanted to share how i study, so here is a step by step process on what to learn first:
1. Japanese Characters
-first start with Katakana (the most easy one)
-second is Hiragana (the typical Japanese characters)
2. Vocabulary
3. Constructing sentences
-linking verbs
-possessive's
-etc.
4. Kanji characters (this is the most difficult characters in japanese language. one character means 1 word or more)
-This is just a little optional. you can learn this at the end of the lesson :)
But what is the best way to learn japanese easily is to speak to a japanese that knows english to help you communicate and understand each other while learning :)
How about you guys? what are you step by step process in learning japanese? I still need more vocabularies to learn to and Kanji characters as well. o

I learned Japanese by starting at the Kanji. Kanji is probably the hardest part of learning the Japanese language and I think it was really a good idea that I started learning it first more than anything else. I learned the Kanji characters by Heisig method which is actually in my opinion the best method of learning Kanji. I learned 2000+ kanji characters in less than 4 months. And I can read and write all of them and of course, identify them with corresponding meanings. Oh, by the way I already know how to write in Hiragana and Katakana since I was a kid so I don't include that anymore in my study. I learned next is the Grammar. And up to now, I am still learning the Grammar. The Japanese words are learned simultaneously for me. Every time I encounter a new word, I memorize its meaning and try to use it in many different sentences. Just kind of like how I learn vocabulary words in the English language. So Vocabulary learning is an ongoing process for me. This is how I am learning Japanese.

So am I. I'm not fluent in Japanese either. I just devote my time to learn. And yes, we can talk to Japanese too! Who knows, maybe one day we can go to Japan together! Haha.

Wow~ you are one great learner I must say. ^O^ I envy your skills to easily learn things and especially kanji :) I only know few kanjis and i think it's just less than 20 characters i know XD. But I can say i am good at writing hiragana and katakana. Since those are the characters i first studied :)
With regards to your method of learning Kanji. i don't know that method. can you teach me how? or any links that could help me with that?
I am also still in the grammar composition in japanese and still learning :)

I love Japanese culture, foods and fashion but I find its hard learning their language. I learnt Japanese when I was at school in Bali, there are so many Japanese tourists in Bali and my sensei told us to practice the Japanese language with the tourists. But at that time I dislike Japanese lesson because it is so hard, but I finally talked to 2 Japanese tourists if Im not mistaken their name is Arisa and the other one Isihara. They are so cute and friendly.
Learning Japanese language, I also learn about the body gesture like bowing and we need to do it perfectly or else the sensei told us to repeat it again and again.
But its been years since I graduated from school and then I never practiced the language. So I only remember little about Japanese language.

That is good you have friends to practice with and your father gave you photocopied book of learning Japanese, does he also interested in Japanese too?
There are also video tutorial on youtube learning Japanese, it can help us to learn the pronounciation. But I havent check it, right now Im focusing in English learning to prepare for TOEFL test. In my country, in order to be eligible for thesis writing I need to have TOEFL score. English language is hard, but Japanese is also hard because Japanese has it owns alphabet, katakana, hiragana, kanji.
I like Japan, their technology is great and the people are so discipline, their food is healthy but delicious.
Who knows maybe someday we can go to Japan, I pray for that.

Japanese language is really kinda hard but I still want to learn it :D Even just some basics and all. I have few Japanese friends too but I only talk to them with simple japanese like how are you, good morning, goodbye and etc.. They are now living in Japan so we only talk/chat though facebook. :( I miss them already.
I don't have a japanese book but I have photocopied japanese book :D My Dad gave it to me from their office :3

haha~ well yeah, I love their language so much and would love to go to their country soon too. :)
Hiragana is much more brush stroking than Katakana.. you can see that Katakana uses lines most often than Hiragana.. Hiragana uses a little of brush strokes style :)

Watch more anime! xD I learn lots of Japanese vocabulary from watching anime. It's somehow the best way but it is not formal. So, it is also not really a good way. But, I still prefer learn it from watching anime to speak first then learn how to read the real Japanese word. Probably it would be easier. :)

Haha~ you should say "Watashi wa ScrubJ des'" :) that's without the "ka" since "ka" in the last of the sentence is used for asking questions :)
I am still learning. So hopefully soon I will get the hang of it and conversing to Japanese people :D lol *dreaming
