I recently bought a 'SONY' DVD Player from a store around at a considerably low price. It was packed so well in every thing SONY and even with a warranty Seal. After a few months of use. The DVD doesn't display the SONY Logo anymore but a funny logo and claiming to play virtually everything! I feel that this is a fake, so how does one detect a fake before spending on it?

hey, you may check the serial number on Sony's website . as for laptops it works. some one in our area brought a laptop of Sony , when he checked with the company that serial number does not exists at all , so it was fake.
Another method is , go to a Sony's service center and ask them to check . keep the original Bill with you , just give them photocopy. thanks.
