My sister used to treat her kids bread or biscuits instead of candies to avoid toothache and tooth damage. She also limit their chocolate intake for the same purpose too.So far, the kids do understand it.

Maybe that is why my children regarded it as a REWARD, because candies are not an everyday treat for them. It is very seldom that they could eat candies because I hate it when they have cavities. They are fond of eating hard candies rather than chocolates so I don't think they would acquire diabetes in the process and of course considering the small quantity.

R3j, i seldom want to buy candies to treat my child when he is doing something good. He had been trained as not to eat too much candies for the sack of his teeth. I usually would buy his preferred toy or food, as a treat for being a good boy. Sometimes, i would even buy a pair of shirt with shorts, as a treat to him. He used to received this type of treats and he seems very happy about it.

My son has ADHD, so we tend not to give him sweets, as this makes his behavior really bad.
When it is Halloween he go out trick or treating and that is a time we let him have sweets, another time would be christmas and odd times when we are out.
My son never asks for sweets, as he knows that he has issues with them.

My daughter is still too young to eat candy but when she gets older I might reward her with it once in a while but will try to limit it more to Halloween, Easter candies etc.. I will hopefully reward her with a toy or something else. But I dont think an occasional candy treat is s bad thing.
