Do dogs really love their owners or are they more susceptible to Stockholm Syndrome?

My buddy and I had a really lengthy debate on this and he almost convinced me.I showed him a bunch of stories of dogs waiting for they're deceased owners and their owners but he was convinced that dogs didn't really care.
What are your thoughts?

Your friend is guilty of anthropomorphisation thinking that dogs are like people in fluffy coats and they are not.
Do dogs love their owners, the owner is, to the dog another member of their pack and if the owner does their job right then they are the dominant member.
Dogs are social animals and feel safe and happy when they are with the pack, a dog alone is anxious and fearful, though that fear may appear as aggression.
My dogs loved me from the start, overjoyed to see me. This defeats the Stockholm Syndrome theory since that relies on being around the captor for a period of time before identification with the captor occurs
all the best urban

I know my dog cares as when its time for me to come home he is sitting and waiting for me at the door. When I leave he cry's at the door for me and it does not matter if the rest of the family is home he misses his mom when I am not there. I know that my dog would never be able to live with another person as when we are gone he refuses to eat and has to be taken care of by a vet or he would not survive us being gone. I hate to leave him when we go but at the same time I know that he is in good hands and would be even sadder if we took him as he hates to be in strange places and would have a issue being in a hotel room when we travel. Thankfully we have only had to travel for long distances 2 times since we got him but each time we were gone he refused to eat and lost so much weight he would mope around and cry till we came to pick him up then it was like the end of the world he was so happy and knew we were taking him home. When he gets home he is even more excited to be home he rolls around on the floor yipping and yapping all excited. So I have to say that yes he does care and a lot at that. Dogs are smart and will give their life to protect their pack, as a dog owner you become the pack.
