Could we Really create a Robot to be 'life-like'

I'm currently studying Artificial Intelligence at my University and its one of the one things that really struck my interest, could we really be capable of creating a robot capable of human sense such as Vision, voice recognition, smell and touch. The answer that most researchers have spend many years of efforts trying to find a way. My lecturer has a Robot currently build to pick up and place down items but this took forever is only one sense. He also mentioned that many of the worlds top artificial intelligence scientists are currently trying to use all sections of our brain into one big program or software information system to be integrated into the robot to perform tasks that humans are capable of doing. This means getting robots to communicate and socialise with other robots and humans. Using these skills as a way of to perform tasks that are done everyday by us, using our senses for example if Robot A wants Robot B to make a produce such as a cup of coffee, the robot would need to use his voice recognition to listen to the command of the other robot, the other robot would then need to process that information into recognizing what raw materials need to be found for cup of coffee, such as milk, sugar and the grounded coffee beans. This is where they have struggled for many years, robots have never been able to have the power of self-thought or have any kind of initiative. However the other senses are used such as touch to grab the materials and to make the coffee itself such as stirring etc. Smell could be used to smell the coffee being made so many senses that are currently be researched now almost intensively, companies are spending millions into research and trying to create that one programme to make it all possible.

There are a lot of discoveries introduced in Japanese markets that really have been produced for the ultimate use of certain restaurant in Japan. It was telecast in an exclusive news just to let the whole world, that robots are the ones taking orders when a customer arrives in their restaurant. It was carefully made to understand human wants to eat and the ability to take orders and delivers the orders to the customers.Although, the robots do not looks exactly like a human being, yet it was so design to act and respond to human behavior. There are so much to search and do to make a perfect robot that acts and thinks just like a real human being.I think in the coming future we could have such a robot.

In observance with these new technologies produced by Japanese geniuses,I could just think that in not too far time there would appear some human look alike robots serving the factories or as one fixing your groceries to be delivered in your own home that you also ride with. All that you think as the impossible could be realized in just a few months or year only. The scientist are actually not stopping making renovations to their recent findings.

You mentioned Japan here, Most of the Japanese market is full of ridiculous inventions I for one had a friend give me a catalogue of what's on the Japanese market for 2012, the Wii 2 dominated page to page which isn't hard to understand why. One thing that caught my eye was a hat that you could use to store your iPhone and with it has attached head phones and microphone of which are compatible with Skype and many other Java applets that use voice recognition. Its really fascinating to see.

I think harobot technology are more advanced and improved with each coming year. I see no reason to believed that robots can be created to be as human as posible,. we don't have to go to the extremes of the Terminator but i think a life like robot is not too far into the future for us.

Yes most definitely, we have come a long way from ideas of creating robots in the 60's and 70's into starting to manufacture and built these robots for tasks during the late 70/80's due to the high demand for sci-fi toys and research due to its popularity amongst the world during that era. With star wars and Star trek, twilight zone when Sci-fi was really in demand. This was an important period in the development of Artificial intelligence, and yes I don't see an apocalyptic war between man and machine any time soon, :). Of course these next few years can really define Artificial intelligence and put many decades of research to the test, its like technology with smartphones and computers. We will have smartphones with Terabyte hard drives pretty much in the next 5-10 years so its a constant development that happens day in day out.

I am not sure what the future holds, however I am sure that things will be possible in the future that we can't even imagine now. But, I have to say that I am very worried about what might happen if we end up having robots to do everything for us. One thing that might happen is that we all become overweight because there is very little need for us to make effort with things. Sometimes the only exercise that people will get is when they're cooking and cleaning, and if that is taken away from them then they wouldn't get more exercise. Another issue is that people may lose their jobs if more robots come in to be able to do the same jobs that humans do at the moment. We all know how the economy is at the moment, and if even more people lose their jobs then there is no way that things are going to get any better for the country.

Yes I understand what you are saying here and I have a very good film to prove this, have you ever watch Disney Pixar film WALL-E? Because all the humans live on a ship that is completely Robot-based and man had become so lazy that their life expectancy lowered and their body disorientated due to having everything done for them. I hope we don't stoop to that level. In the current economic crash I for one would not recommend robots stealing occupations, general house work around the house; probably yes but to a certain extent to where you can have regular excise also.

I'm 1005 sure that man can do these kind of genius invention in the near future. The same thing that happened centuries ago when people invented the flying machine -airplanes. I think during those times, many would only dreamed of flying like a bird simply because the technology is limited to what they have on those time. But with the new discoveries and invention, the flying machine is only a thing of the past. Sometimes, the science fiction that we only see on movies and tv's where a result of man's dream of the future. A clear vision of what the future of human kind will be. Though every vision differs from one another or some may be bad, it is still a window to see the future in the present. Simply because we are limited of our technology today, that these things were simply a dream. But, in 5 or 10 years time, the view about your discussion will only be a thing of the past.

Anything is possible in this world and i am sure that human like robot will be created soon. It will be great to have them as servants..lol I would like to own one. I can see it already happening. yess. I do understand that there will be lots of cons also for it but I think one must see it, how it works and it can be used to good purposes also. Great discussion. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead .

Yes it would be great to have robots do chores around the house and freeing up our time, but yes you are right we are not far behind the discovery.

i dont believe that we can. were so complex...

Complexity yes that's what the researchers are trying to solve, the complexity that makes us human and one of the dominating species on the planet.

No one can tell what the future will bring. Many of the things we only see in the movies is now fast becoming a reality. Yes, for sure there will come a day that man can create a robot that will be like us but I hope robots will be put for the good of mankind not for destruction of our world.
