Fast food or Canned goods?

Philippines
September 25, 2012 9:16am CST
I am living on my own and currently employed in a company. I don't know how to cook and I depend on foods that don't require cooking and are instant. When I go out for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I buy food outside in fastfoods and food malls. But I depend mostly on fastfoods or canned goods because they are more convenient for me and easy to prepare. I heard one shouldn't depend much on fastfoods because it is not healthy for oneself. I also heard canned goods aren't good too because they have a lot of preservatives. How about you, what is your take on these kinds of foods? Which is tolerable? better?

I depends on the food but fast food tends to be very unhealthy, full of fat, sugar, salt and lacking in nutrients. Canned food, while it can often contain a lot of salt due to the way it is preserved, at least contains some nutrition. So, in general, I would say that canned foods are better. Although cooking isn't that difficult. There are prepared foods which you could try. You can microwave a lot of food including potatoes and green vegetables. Packaged foods can be full of preservatives but not always and food companies are trying to reduce the amount of bad stuff in their products. You can get things in cans which have been vacuum packed so use less preservative. Also, if you can get a frozen version of some of the canned foods you use, they sometimes contain fewer preservatives because the freezing process is what preserves it. Also, there are a lot of dishes which are simple to cook. You should be able to find plenty on the internet.

Packaged foods should have certain nutritional information on them, although that might depend on the country in which the are sold. Some microwaveable foods can be bad for you. Again, if there is nutritional information on them then you should make sure you read it. As I said though, you can microwave potatoes and other veg. Or you could just live on cold salads and fruit!

I need to be knowledgable in cooking now because I plan on going abroad and living on my own. Yeah. Some foods that are packaged have less preservatives. But how will you know? And they say microwave foods are also bad, is it true?

ok I think both of them will just eat a lot of your earnings but they will deliver little goodness to you...and can not be like food prepared at home...and that is why I have started giving little training to my sons about the basic foods we eat at home so they will not face the problem when they will be somewhere else all alone like you and they are learning well...so my suggestion will be whenever you are back to home for some vacations take help of your mother, aunt or someone to know about the basic foods which you like if possible otherwise you have to compromise with the option available t o you.

Yeah. In short, I have to eventually learn how to cook. What are easy-to-prepare foods you know that are healthy?

That is really great to hear that you want to learn cooking a little so at least a few meals you can prepare at home...ok see dal rice is the easiest one ..boiling rice in hot water for some time and how it happens you have to learn practically from any one at home, the same happens with making dal you have to learn it from any one at home, while making rice or dal you can place one or two potato which will be fully boiled along with the dal soaking the good properties of dal and once it is out peel it and add chopped onions ,green chilly, and some salt and oil to it and this can nicely be ate with rice and dal and all this can me made in half an hour when you learn it.so try to arrange a practical session with someone...you can read some cook books about preparing food quickly and if you have a microwave learn about what foods can be made easily with this.oh I forgot you can even roast a papad to your dal and rice and alu or patato mix which will add to taste. You can learn some salads from the discussion from salads section which are good.Your problems gives me a nice idea to start a blog about preparing simple cooked foods at home for those who are not experts in cooking.

Yeah. I'll be waiting for that blog. They say microwaved foods are not good. Is it true? In a way, it is still fastfood because you are preparing foods fast.

for me i will prefer fast food rather than canned foods, because the food in canned foods is contain of high in chemical preservative compare to the fast food, because food in fast food always cooked before it will prepare and they also have laps time to their food.

Yeah. Do you think also there are chemicals in fastfood because they are also engineered foods. Fast food being fast to prepare is also not healthy. But how about canned foods in tuna? They claim to be nutritious and high in omega 3. It is better than other canned foods like sardines or corned beef?

Both of them are not healthy to eat. But if I would only choose one, I would pick eating fast food over canned goods. Because its much more delicious. :)

Yeah. Thanks for the reply. How do you often eat in fast foods? How often do you eat to consider it still healthy for you?

I don't eat too much at fast food places any more, because they can be very expensive and they aren't very good for your health because they cook foods in oil. Today, they have many things you can buy if you don't like to cook. There are microwavable foods, such as the likes of t.v. dinners, pizzas, ramen noodles, even Chinese foods and breakfast foods. They're even coming out with canned goods, that all you have to do is is put in/on a microwavable dish and microwave. Just add some fresh fruit and vegetables and you have a main course.

Yes. I heard of these microwavable foods, such as pizzas, noodles, just put them in the microwave oven and then heat it. But are these safe and healthy?

Thanks for the advice. I do these most of the time. My uncle brings cooked food to my condo unit and I store them in the freezer. I'll just take them out and reheat it in the steamer or oven.

Probably more healthy than fast foods. There are some called Lean Cuisine. One must have to look on the label and check out the calorie content, etc.

well, it sure costs a lot of money to dine the way you are dining. if i were you, i would learn how to cook. i guess i would go with the canned foods.

Yeah. There are two disadvantages of going fast foods. They are more expensive and unhealthy. Why would you choose canned foods instead of fastfoods?
• Philippines

Both are not healthy really. If you don't know how to cook maybe you can study a little about cooking for your health purposes too. You can search the internet for very simple recipes that you can do.

Thanks for your advice. How about you? What do you consider easy to cook? How about keeping frozen foods in the freezer and heating them when eating, is that healthy?

Hi Jvincent, I dont like both canned foods and fast foods. I would rather eat with scramble egg, make fried rice, or make stir fry vegetable, salad with chillie sauces and fried tofu these kind of foods is easy to make and wont cost us a lot. Maybe you can browse on internet how to make easy soup. Fresh vegetables is much cheaper than canned food or fast food, it is more healthier and we can save more money. Dont worry although you said you dont know how to cook, you can start learning cook easy foods and dont give up if it doesnt turn the way you want...practice makes perfect. My brother is 15 years old and he can make easy foods like fried rice, scramble egg or easy soup so in case when none at home to cook for him he can prepare his own meal. So I believe you can do it jvincent.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I first need to find time to learn because my work demands a lot of time. It will need a lot of time for me to learn cooking.

Depends on the situation, when I'm out and I don't want to spend much money I eat on fast food. When at home I take canned goods if there's no ready meal around the house made by either my mom or our helper. But there are plenty of healthy canned goods in the market sitting, like products of Century Tuna, I love their products and I can finish a bowl of tuna hot and spicy with rice. Delicious! :)
• Philippines
29 Sep 12
Yeah. That's the one I know that is healthy and good. The century tuna offers omega 3 that is good for the heart.

I'm looking forward to living on my own soon and it is a problem that bothers me too.I've tried to learn to cook several easy dishes, some from my parents, some from Internet.I had some fun in the process seriously. But I guess it would be quite hard to think about cooking after a day of work.So fast food may be inevitable sometimes. But I think I will not eat canned food. The thought of some chemicals in it makes me lose my appetite.
• Philippines
29 Sep 12
Fast food will be inevitable but we must not make it a habit. Yeah. There are chemicals in canned foods which prolongs the life of food. But I think it is okay to eat canned foods as long as you heat them in the oven. It will be okay right?

Both foods are not good for your health. There a lot of small carinderia or turo turo around where you can find home cook meals. This is a better option for you. Best, is to learn to cook simple food by yourself.
• Philippines
28 Sep 12
I'll try to see if there is a carinderia in our neighborhood. I am afraid to try these because it might not be clean after all. My health would be sacrificed. And I am not secured with those carinderias unless they are inside the malls. But these are the ones that are expensive.

when we cook canned food, we always add veggies. that way, it feeds more people and there's added nutrients. try to find places that sell cooked food and try to choose dishes that have veggies instead of fried and barbecued. if they allow half orders, then buy 2 kinds. eat fruit once in a while and take a multivitamin.

I think the most important is taking vitamins with fruits and vegetables. I need to have a balance diet everyday.

I hope you can really find a way for quality eating. Fastfood or canned goods wont make you healthy. All instant food is not really healthy. You should invest for your cooking, find a way, or your health will suffer. But for the mean time, I suggest you can eat canned tuna in vegetable oil only or salt water and wheat bread. I have used that diet for 3 months (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

Thanks for your reply. These things won't make me healthy but sometimes I need them because I am always on the go. Sooner or later, I need to cook on my own. Those foods that you mentioned like tuna, wheat bread and others, are not heavy foods.

I guess I wouldn't do neither... I don't like fast food and I am not a big fan of canned food either. If I was living alone, I still might cook something easy for myself like ramen noodles or sandwiches, maybe even go out for food with family once in a while.

Well i can say i rarely eat what you are talking about. I do have canned goods but they are sauces i use like spaghetti sauce or vegetables in cans because they are sometimes just easier to use. I do frozen foods sometimes as well, like pizza or frozen chicken dinners or even some pizza at times. If you can cook in an oven than you can cook alot of different things. I dont know if you have an oven or not but hopefully you do because its a great thing to have when you need to cook something up. You can always just buy a little toaster oven too and cook with that. Those are pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it.

Wow neat. I also have frozen foods wherein I just heat them in a steamer. That's my technique at home. When I need to eat, I just reheat the food in the freezer to the steamer or oven. I need to think of easy-to-prepare foods so that in case of emergency I can get something to eat.

Anything in excess is bad. Better learn to cook simple dishes instead of buying food outside and eating canned goods. If you will sum it up, you will be spending a lot less if you cook your own food plus the health benefits that you can have with healthier food and that you would not be worried of getting sick coz you know that the food you prepared is clean.
• Philippines
28 Sep 12
Yeah. I also observed that there are foods that are dirty. You won't know if the foods are clean if you just tried it.

I think you should learn to cook at least a few basic items. Not only will you be healthier but you will save money. I would recommend buying a good basic cook book. When I was a single man I bought a big thick betty crocker cook book. I helped me out quite a bit. It contained instructions for just about everything. That particular book might not cover your needs but I'm certain there will be something available that will be helpful. I would visit your local bookstore and present your problem with one of the knowledgeable staff members there.

Thanks for your advice. I should indeed learn to cook. I'll go and download some basic cook books in the internet.

Sad to say both are not good for your health and I am sure you are aware of that.Try to learn how to cook even those simple ones or buy cooked foods but not from fast foods.Maybe you can eat canned foods or fast foods but don't do it more often
• Philippines

Yeah. They will be emergency foods in which I don't have time to prepare. Sooner or later I'll learn how to cook.

I suggest to buy juices or fruits too. Both of the canned goods and food from fast food are not that healthy. Be watchful on the food intake. Just like what happened to my 3 year old son :-( He is not eating well that it's why he get's colds most of the time.

So it would be okay to eat fastfoods and canned goods mostly but just partner it with fruits and vegetables?
