I have a one year and seven month old baby boy and I want him to start learning his alphabet and numbers earlier since he is now responding to what I teach him. Do you have any ideas on how to teach him at this age? I would love to hear your comments and suggestions.

my 2-yr old loves to watch "Brainy Baby" there are a lot of selections from this videos... there's one that teaches alphabet, others are colors, numbers, animals, etc. and aside from that i also teach him to sing the alphabet song. you must be patient enough to sing it frequently for him to adapt and memorize. from there, he can familiarize the letters. at an early age of 1 yr and 5months, he already knows how to sing the complete song. just that he can't really correctly say it. and before he turned 2, he also already knows how to count from 1 to 20... and can even identify the numbers, colors, and some letters. one thing also, it will be useful if you also have a book that you can read to him so he can visualize and familiarize how the letters and numbers look like. good luck!

Yes, I noticed that he is responding to the songs on my iPad and he can memorize some of the lyrics. That's when I got the idea to teach him now where he is still like a sponge soaking up all that he sees and hear. Thank you so much for all of your suggestions. I'm kinda excited now. Good luck to us. I will add you as my friend. :)

I don't really agree with showing videos to young children, because I think that there are much better ways to teach them letters and numbers. I think that you can buy some educational electronic books, and these seem a lot better than the television. If you can, you should buy some big sticky letters and put them on various items around the house that he knows the name of and that means that he would get used to seeing the same letters on the items and would learn to read that way. Don't worry too much about teaching him though, as that is what school is for, and I am sure he will be fine if he doesn't learn until then.

Although it is important that he is ready for school,I think it wouldn't that be interesting if he already knows all of these before going to school.

Ferianne, when my son is still a toddler, i used to show him some flashcards with alphabets and numbers. Although he don't really understand them at that time, but he shows interest in them. you can even buy some toys that have alphabets and numbers. When you press those character, it will speak out the alphabets and numbers for him to listen. Everyday, you try to take some time practicing those items with him. I am sure day by day, you will slowly see some improvement....

Flashcards are great visual aids for toddlers! My mom used it for me when I was in kindergarten.

i have a friend who uses "Your Baby Can Read Program". it is composed of 5 dvd's and flashcards. she uses it with her baby ever since. surprisingly, at 24 months, her daughter knows how to read, differentiate colors, and shapes. i also want to try this to my 15 month old, however, it's not available in the market. i've heard she bought the program online for more or less 4,000 pesos if i am not mistaken. i saw some copies (not original) from online sellers in facebook for about 450-600 pesos. on the other hand, i have a 15 month old niece and she already know hot to count numbers 1-10 and how to sing the abc's without any dvd's. my sister was really on hand on teaching her and me either with my daughter, however, it really depends on child's capabilities. every child is different. some are advance and some, you will just be surprised that they're actually know some things without you teaching them!

Kids are really fun to teach as their brains are like empty vessels that are ready to be filled in. Though educational videos and music can be helpful in the development of a child this is not the only way they can learn. Let your child engage in physical activities as well. Memory retention is better when the learners are involve in a physical activity where they enjoying and having fun.

Hi! As I have an almost 3 year old, I often wonder the same thing. You could try the local library as the Childrens librarian may have some ideas. Does he go to a daycare? Ask if there is something that he goes for such as trains? See if there is a kid-friendly program that has trains as the main theme.
So far my little mans favorites are Elmo and Little Einsteins. I know that Little Einsteins are a bit beyond him (5-7 year olds) but the friendly animation, teamwork, and great music are reassurring. I also try to get him to interact with it.
Hope this helps!
