My job requires a lot of overtimes and shifting. When I am assigned at night shifts, I get only short amount of sleep per day. Consequently, I get frequent migraines in between work due to lack of sleep. How can I avoid migraines?

Drink lots of water and try to keep good to a diet full of fruits and vegetables. Eat healthy and try to eat at the same times each day. Try to get as much sleep as possible, even if that means sleeping on the train to work, or on your break at work.

The solution is only getting good sleep. If that is not possible mental make up that the sleep one had is sufficient. also drinking a lot of water, tea etc. may help.

Thanks for your advice. Those are the things I can think of. I already did the first thing that is to drink a lot of water. I follow 8-10 glasses a day. I can't sleep on the train. I can take advantage during lunch break and take a nap after eating. Those are the basics things I know already but sometimes I still ineffective at work because of migraine.

vincent: Sleep is a must. When one cannot sleep he must tune up his mind in such a way that I am not getting good sleep today. whatever sleep we get is sufficient. this is what we do when travel from India to usa or canada-- we get staggered sleep. of course there is no need for us to do work. we do get jet lag after reaching destination. solution -- sufficient sleep or mind make up that lesser sleep is sufficient,.

I guess I have to get sleep when I have time. For my job, sleep is very luxurious. I try also to train myself that lesser is already sufficient. Hopefully my body and mind can adjust to it with ease and without discomfort.

To avoid stress, you need to have enough rest and sleep. The problem is not you getting migraines but you having not enough rest/sleep. Take time to think how you get the rest that you need. It is not only migraine that will be the effect of no enough rest, but many others will rise soon. So it's better to act now.

Yeah. Like now, I just got home from work. It's 1am here. I have to get to work at 8:30. I have to learn how to steal sleep.

I also have occasional migraines and it started when I was in College though, I really do not know what triggered it coz I always make it a point to sleep at least 8 hours every day. Now, my migraine triggers whenever I lack sleep, too. And it usually lasts for 2-3 hours for a whole week. Migraines are a sign that the body is very much out of balance. Whatever you can do to soothe it, will help. Comfort is what you need when your head is aching. Try a warm shower. It is relaxing, the heat causes blood vessels in the body to dilate and draw some blood away from the vessels that are pounding in the brain. Fragrance soothes some people. Whether it is the smell of lavender, or of a cup of chamomile tea, indulge yourself. As soon as the headache starts, fill your kitchen sink with the hottest water you can stand to put your hands in. While it fills, put in your hands and arms at least up to the elbows. You want to keep the water as hot as you can stand, so you will have to add more hot water. Generally, within about ten minutes the headache should stop.

Thanks for the advice. Like you, I had migraine when I was still in college. I got this from my mother and she is also prone to migraine. I'll try aromatherapy. I'll buy something that soothe me and make me relax like the smell of lavender. I am not sure about the hot water remedy. If you would put your arms and elbows, would you get burned by the hot water? For me, I get more dizzy when I am perspiring under the hot sun.

well if you cannot take these migraines anymore better yet look for another job and quit this hazardous job you have at the moment. Remember that your health is more important than earning money from a company who doesn't consider the effects of lack of sleep to their employees. Find a new job and work for a new boss, that's something I can suggest you for now.

Okay. One thing is that I can't leave the job because I like the job. The only thing I don't like about it is the shifts and schedules. Because of this it compromises my sleeping hours/time. From monday to friday, I expect to get 6 hours of sleep the most or lesser. And when weekends comes, I'll just take more sleep to replace the lack of sleep I had during the weekdays. It's not yet really in the verge of affecting my health, but I get surprise migraine in the middle of the day. I'll start to get dizzy and I'll just pause for a while until it goes away. I take biogesic that is for headache. But when the time comes that it will be hazardous to my health, then I'll find another job.

Just try to rest if you have a little time or break in work and remember to eat fruits and eat your meals in the right time :) you can also drink water more often to. Just don't get too stressed and if you are, try closing your eyes for a bit or layback from your chair :)

Yeah. That's all I can do. I drink a lot of water and somehow it helped. At work, I also don't get too stressed because it can harm you emotionally and physically. Thanks for your suggestions. I try also closing my eyes for couple of minutes if I can't sleep during daytime. Somehow it helps me feel relax and energize. But still I am finding more effective ways to stay alert and avoid migraine.
