New music versus music you already know

At my local library we are able to borrow books, cds and dvds. I love music and I borrow a lot of different cds. Most of the time I borrow pop or rock albums from singers I already know or compilation cds from the 80s or the 90s. Every once in a while I borrow a cd from a singer that I don't know, sometimes I like that music and sometimes I don't like the music at all and only listen to the cd once. Do you often listen to unknown bands and music from genres that you don't know well? Have you discovered some interesting bands that way? Do you usually listen to new music or do you prefer music from the past decades? Why?

It's great you are able to listen to music which you never heard before and can compare it. Each of us has different ways to appreciate music.. I would to try doing something like this..

Yes, sometimes it is interesting to listen to music that we have never heard before. We never know if we are going to enjoy it or not, but I think that it is worth the try and sometimes we discover some great music that way. I am able to borrow cds at my local library and that is a good way to discover new music. I can listen to different cds for free and if I don't like the cds I can simply return them and borrow something else. When I visit the library I love to browse the cds and I always find something interesting.

While keeping up an appetite for good modern music, it is soothing to hear those melodies of yesterdays. Old music is good enough and it never gets stale. The sweet songs linger in our minds forever.

I often listen to old music especially music from the 80's or from the 90's. That is the music that I remember from the time when I was a teenager and I still like that music today. I agree with the things that you wrote about old music, it is still good and we can still listen to it today. Sometimes I also listen to new music like music from this year or music that is only a few years old, because I want to be open for new music as well, but most of the time I like the music from the past decades better.

I do listen to a lot of different types of music but there are 2 types I can't really stand... Rap & bluegrass music... I'm more on a heavy metal side, or hard rock I guess, & industrial & dark music... I do like some pop music but I can only stand to listen to them for so long... You know, they say human race is collection of habitual creatures... Types of music out now don't really interest me...

I don't like rap either. I would never buy a rap cd or borrow a rap cd at the library. I hardly know anything about bluegrass so I don't really have an opinion about that. I prefer pop and rock. Sometimes I also listen to hard rock, but only when I am home alone, because my husband can't stand it. Sometimes when I visit I library I decide to borrow some new cds, but I usually get disappointed. There are a lot of new singers that I really don't like. In the 90's I knew a lot about music and the different bands, today my knowledge the new bands is extremly limited.

I love all kinds of Music and listen to a wide range of styles and music from various decades. If I hear something on a TV Show I look on Spotify to hear other stuff from the artist to see If they might be someone I like. I am always looking for new Music, new to me as well as I have found some great stuff from years ago.

When I hear a song that I like I do the same thing. I try to find some of the other songs from that artist in order to find out if I like the other things that he or she has made. Sometimes I really like the some of the other songs as well and that singer becomes one of my favourite singers and sometimes I get disappointed in the other songs and lose my interest in the singer. I recently discovered a Danish band called Sort Sol. They are quite old but I didn't know their music that well. Some times ago I heard one of their songs in a movie and decided to look for their other songs. Today they have become one of my favourite bands.

I believe there is a need for all types of music. Sometimes the music we grew up with needs to blend with the music we have yet to discover. When they meet there is beautiful harminy in the music to enjoy. We need the old music and the new music to have mausical balance in our lives.

That is a very good point. I think a mix of old and new music is a great thing. I have noticed that I listen to a lot of old music especially music from the 80's or from the 90's when I was a teenager and I am trying to be open to new music as well, but there is a lot of new music that I don't like. I have discovered a few new singers that I like and I found some of the other cds that they have made. I know a lot of bands from the 90's and not a lot of bands from today, but I think that it is possible that I will find other new bands that I like.

There are very few songs that I like from today. The music has changed so much that nowadays you don't even need t have a good voice to become a singer. Just yell & scream to loud music or rap off words to pounding music & you got yourself a hit. Occasionally I will hear a song on the radio & think, "Oh I like that song." That's when I try to find out who it's sung by & like you I go to the library to borrow the CD to see if there are any more songs that I might like by them. Most of the time though I just stick w/ artists that I already know & like.

I also find very few songs from today that I like. I have tried to borrow some cds with new music, just to see if there were some songs that I liked. Sometimes the songs were so bad that I didn't even listen to the entire cd Every once in a while I hear a new song on the radio that I like and then I try to find other songs from the same singer. Some time ago I heard a song by a Danish singer called Peter Sommer and next time I visited library I found some of his cds. I like the rest of the cds as well and sometimes it is possible to find a new singer that I like, but I must admit that it doesn't happen that often.

Music... - There has never been so much available to listen to today, unlike when this photo was taken.
I listen to all sorts of music, including Classical, Jazz, Folk, Traditional Popular and Rock music. In terms of Rock, I believe - for better or worse - Rock's golden age existed between about the mid sixties and the mid eighties, possibly extending a further ten years; so that's a short thirty year period. By the mid-'80s, after an extraordinary period of breakneck creativity, I believe Rock had started to lose its potential for innovation. But beautiful music continued to be created within Rock, and continues to this day. There's a great deal of beautiful music being made within Rock; in fact it could be said this decade has seen a creative upsurge. I listen to a lot of new music, and much of it is stunningly good. Even if the climate is not what it once was: for in the '60s, and '70s, and to some extent also in the '80s, popular music had extraordinary power and influence, again for better or worse depending on one's views. While innovation was constant. Also, music was pretty hard to come by, as compared to today, so it possessed enormous mystique. At the same time, this is an incredible era, because there's such a wealth of music available. There was a time, I only heard a fraction of the music available at any given time. Today, I'm able to listen to music I'd only heard about, but never heard. That is mindbogglingly amazing to me.

Call me a music fascist, but when I discover one band, I don't care about future past and present bands, I just listen to that one band till I bleed, it's been 4 years now that I listen to the same band and I rarely make exceptions. However...I listen to a lot of music that is in another language, but it's for educational purposes and not something I care for that much.

hi porcospino. i love music as well and often find myself listening to music while working or while doing mylot. my musical taste was influenced by my parents and uncles as well so i would listen from anything between the cascades, u2, smokey robinson, the platters, duran duran, and most of the music that came out in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. i also had my own favorites and my musical taste is very diverse as i listened to a lot of hip hop and rnb plus whatever variant of rock music that i can get my hands on. nowadays, i listen to grooveshark and i find myself listening to a lot of their radio stations. more often that not, their playlist will be that of artists that i have only heard the first time. what i listen to really depends on my mood. sometimes it is something that i really like like wu-tang clan or dmx or something that i have just listened to the first time like a local electro pop band or a spoken word of speeches done by former filipino presidents. cheers and happy mylotting!!!

Porco, if you asked me to choose, i would prefer music from the past. It don't contain a lot of unwanted languages which makes the song ugly. I only listen to a few music of today since they are of my favorite genres. I seldom want to listen to music from unknown band. Because most of them are using languages which not really fit for us to listen, especially when we have children around. Have a nice day...

Hi Porcospino, I am a music addict, but I generally listen to old film music, and even some modern film music. Our music is slightly different from western music. I like our classical music as well. I also like some of the western classical numbers, which have been somewhat copied in some of our Indian film music. lol Effectively, I have to say I like every type of music. But I do find Chinese and Japanese traditional music fascinating. I could listen to that also for several hours. MTV used to give a few songs like Tarkan and another good number from somewhere in Europe. That was also acceptable. Coming to truly western, I am afraid I dont find Hard rock ok. Yes, off and on I do like a few numbers. But I never did like Michael Jackson.

Love songs would always be on my top list. For the newer kind of songs, I like listening to RnB music. My teenage sons are so fond of this type of music so I learned to like it too.

I think I belong to those people who get stuck to what they listened to in their teens and twenties. I some times listen to new bands and songs if they are like the classic rock songs I like.

Honestly speaking, I like to listen the old music (song) from late 80s and 90s compare to latest one. I also notice that growing teen sometimes listen and prefer late 80s and 90s song. I don't like to listen to the new music style or produce in market. For me, they seems to have finish idea writing a note music to produce a good one. But I don't deny that some of them really good. That only 2 out of 100. That's why I still keeping my oldies cds. For the latest song, I only buy the compilation album. I believe there must be good song in the compilation album.

I think the old numbers are catchy and they stay on forever. I hardly know any new ones. I go by what I like and not necessarily who sings it, although over time, I get to know the singers as wel. My favourite singers are Jim Reeves,Frank Sinatra, Connie Francis, Engelbert, Ricky Nelson, Bony M, - the list is endless.
