Just today, I was the one giving money to my family even if I don't have money. haha I am the youngest of the family and I have an older sister and Mom and Dad. But just this morning, they were asking me if i still have a little money they could borrow. Well, I have a small amount of extra money from my savings so I said yes. And then they ask for it but will pay me tomorrow. HAHA
I really feel like i was the one giving them allowances when i distributed my money to Mom and Sister :D Dad was at work.
Do you guys also do the same sometimes? Giving allowances to your family instead of them giving you? :D

Yes, that is funny. You giving allowances instead of the other way around. It's very good that you can help like that. You must have a very close family relationship. I'm old and do not have much family left that is very close to me. But your post made me smile because you sound so cute and happy. And pleased to be able to help your family when they need it. You are a good person. I hope as you get older the harsh realities of the world never change you.

You're welcome and thank you for commenting! I do appreciate it. And I thought you got enough lectures from almost everybody else when you were just trying to share a happy thought. Sometimes this happens, but not from me. I prefer to encourage.

Haha yeah, I never thought I would gain some lectures and comments in my post ^u^ But still I am happy about it. :) makes me feel the people are seriously taking my share :) It doesn't matter what kind of comments as long as they give their own opinion on it and all :D
Thank you so much again for the encouragement ^u^

I am 22 and have just come back from University but have to live at home for a while because I don't have the money to be able to get my own place just yet. I am not paying much rent at home because my parents are very generous in that respect, and because of that I like to try to pay for some things for them if there is any way that I can do so. Like, I always pay for the food shopping which is about $50 per week and I will pay for the television which is $60 a month. So I don't give many handouts but I do like to help whenever I can.

WoW` you are really a great person to be a daughter friend. I'm sure your family will be happy about it but of course, I know they also don't want to bother you since you are still in school :)
I really like reading comments like this :) thanks for sharing :)

Surely we feel very proud of ourselves and also happy for our family members when we're already the one giving money to them. The time I received my first ever paycheck, I treat my mom to eat lunch at restaurant and we both felt really proud of me and I am really happy to make her happy.

It seems that the responses you will read here will depend a lot on the culture of the people who write it and of the personal situation of them. I believe in helping each other in family (or even with vey close friends) when they are in need. But it would depend on my means and about how much money I can spare. I read in your answers that your mother doesn`t have enough money of her own as she doesn`t work. If you do, you might give her some of what you can spare to her. But I don`t think that your sister should have bought a laptop for herself if she did not have the money to pay for it. Yet, I insist, it depends on yuor culture. I have seen here many young people from other lands talking about their parents "making sacrifices" for them. Excuse me, but they chose to have them and it must have been their joy and goal for life to give the best to them. There`s nothing to repay.

Yes friend, I always give some spare money to my mom if I get my salary from work :) for the expenses too at home. And my sister, just borrowed money to go to her office but she has already paid me the money she borrowed earlier :) Money in our family is something we have to share with each other. So it doesn't really mean anything as long as we are happy together and help each other at home :)

Oh they have allowances and income but my sister has some debts to pay for her laptop and recently my mom got confined in the hospital but now she's fine.. Mom is just a house wife so she depends upon my dad's income for budgeting :)

Well yes, and your father, not you, should be paying for mother... right? And your sister should pay for her own laptop.
Is it normal in your country for the child to take care of the family? Here, the family takes care of the child until they move out, but the child never pays for family.

Really? (O.o) it's normal in here to pay, My mom and dad don't have a lot of money too so I sometimes give them for their needs as well. We should also help our parents since they are the one who raised us and they pay for all of our everyday needs. Atleast we should give them the love they gave us in return right?
I even felt happy and gals giving my savings to them even if it's for my own needs :D lol. But I know they will pay me back :D

I do give some money to my parents and my siblings, but only when I want to. They never asked me for it, all of us in the family have work. Besides, I'm already married and whatever money we have goes to my and my husband's savings account. We were raised to be self-sufficient and not to ask for anything that we need as much as possible. Whenever I give some money to my family, it's usually in a way of gifts. And it's not a regular thing.

Me too friend. I also do that. But sometimes when we are in a middle of crisis and short budget on the things we need at home, we always give and lend some money to our parents :) I am still in early 20's so I only worry about my family first. But they don't ask me money if they have money.. only when they don't have and when they need it. :)

as a mother i don't believe in giving my children money for doing what they are suppose to do around the house. I don't think what you are doing is giving a allowance, you are loaning them money in hopes they pay you back. My grandmother gave me some great advice growing up. "don't lend out more then you are willing to give away." If you don't think you are going to get it back, then don't give it away

Haha~ Actually, I don't really mean lending out allowances :D I just mean I feel like I was giving them allowances upon my actions when giving it to them :) It is just a feeling friend not actually the real thing :)
*i can't seem to get what i am trying to say but I hope you understand :)
yes, I am expecting them to pay me because I need the money till the 30th of the month for my work.. and They have already paid me by the way :) They were just borrowing actually :)

I don't give allowances out at my house, but I know it's coming as I have two children. They are still quite young (my oldest is 6 and my youngest turns 3 next month) but I know in a few years I will be handing out allowances as long as they do their part to help out around the house.

Good point! I would feel horrible and more than likely wouldn't accept money from my children as here in Canada the parents always support the child until the child moves out BUT I understand things are different in the Philippines. I also feel that as long as none is hurting one another, and that either way family is helping family then their is no harm in that!

Yes, that's my point actually :) Of course, harming someone is different from helping ^^ If you do that, that would just mean you are forced to help or something :)

Sometimes parents too may experience crisis and short on budgets. So I think their children just have the right to help out their parents :)

Well I used to share to some expenses in the house like electricity, water and food. I think it is the responsibility of the child to give back to their parents for all their sacrifices and hard work that they have done for us. I helping them and lend money sometimes eith out expecting anything in returns.

I wouldn't call that an allowances sine that would be done and a regular base and it would be the same amount.
I don't give my parents money but they help give me and my husband money from time to time. I have never had an allowances in my whole life it's just money to get things for my kids that they need like diapers.

Hi powerpuff! There are times that I would also run out of cash, and my 12 year-old daughter who is very thrifty would also lend me some cash but I would pay her when I was able to withdraw already.
Sometimes, I would tease her that she is richer than her mom.

I think when you have more than enough then no harm in giving to family because after all they are your family. i am away from my family and my in laws are much better off then me ans hubby so we need not to give them since we are still struggling.. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

Yes! that's right! If they need our help, we should always be there for them :) and of course, if you have enough spare money, you can lend some to them too just to add for their needs and expenses at home :D

Before I graduated college. I promised myself that after graduation, I will never ask allowances to my parents anymore. And I kept my promise. Though of course when I'm still single, I still live with them, and just share some of the expenses at home. And now that I'm married, they are the ones to transferred in our home, well just for practical reasons, to help me with my baby, and my brother's school is a block away from us. So it feels like Im the one supporting them already. But it doesnt matter, we're a happy family.

;hi powderpuff girls yes indeed most families do that it goes
back and forth with different members borrowing but we always all
paid it back too.I have done this with my adult son and him with me.we all care for each other.yes I have done it and my son has done it too.

Yes, but some don't usually do that culture about parents borrowing money to their children or anything. I just knew it now from the comments I got here in myLot :D It really just depends on the culture you are in :)
I am from the Philippines and we don't follow that kind of culture so money is not that much of an issue for me and my family ^^
Thank you so much for sharing your experience too by the way :) Cheers!!

I hate when my older family members ask me for money especially the ones who never call me until they need something . A entire year can pass and I never heard from particular family member and whenever it get close to Christmas the person would call me and they dont even call me for my birthday . *sigh*
I am sometime shock that the person have such nerve because they dont even ask how I am doing . They think I have a easy life so they never care to ask me if I am ok just want to take me for a ATM .

hi
I am professor, retired after teaching for 45 years, Here most of the families are combined families, where you can find 3 to 4 generations live in same house together peacefully,
i never ask for money from kids; though they are having high paying jobs

Yes Sir, we are also staying in the same compound as with my aunts and grandparents :) We live peacefully as well. But there are times my parents are in a crisis or is in short of money/ broke, I know they don't want to borrow from us but they don't have any choice as to where they are going to borrow money. It is also our role to help our parents with that matter since we live on the same roof. :) I love helping out with my family

I am giving monthly allowance to my family of origin and I have been doing that for almost a decade now. My parents have already stopped giving me allowances since I was in College and the year I started to work, I was already the one giving them allowances. That has been the case until at present.
