I've been invited to a works party that i really do not want to go to!
But how do you say no? If i don't go i will be the party pooper but i would rather stick needles in my eye than talk work with people who think David Cassidy is still cool.
Have you been in a position like this? What did you do?

Why do you not want to go??. If it was me and I had a legitimate reason for not wanting to go then I'd just say that I couldn't make it but would ask everyone if I missed much when I returned to work the next work day.

I used to dread going to certain parties (but that was during my social anxiety days). Now I see a whole new outlook in going to these dreaded parties. If going to a party means I will get a break from planning and cooking a meal or two, you bet I'll be going just to raid the tables! I put a load of food in my mouth and use that as an excuse why I can't chat at the moment - ha ha! And sorry we can't stay long, but the kids needs to go to bed by a certain time or they become monsters. I thought Shaun Cassidy was cooler!

Yes...all the time! I have to maintain certain working relationships and part of that is attending certain personal functions that I would otherwise not be at. Now I have learned a trick though. If I make an appearance and explain that I will not be able to stay long....I am out of there within an hour. A quick rotation around the room and whoosh..out the door.

omg! i totally don't envy you in this situation. i would just say that i got sick. say you came up with a cold and have a fever. say you have a toothache. that sucks to have to be cornered into that situation. hope you get out of it.

Every cloud has a silver lining and that has come to me in the form of an accident that I had a few years ago. I have this excuse every time I do not want to attend functions..
You too must be having 'good reasons' to decline an invitation?

Hi ajk
Tough call... how about taking an unknown (uncommon) friend with you at the party? This friend knows no one at the party so would remain close to you and you can chat, drink and even eat together...
And if it didnt work... I would take my brother's kid (8 years old) along...

If you have to go ,to keep peace at work, just show up,make sure that every body knows that you are there, and then as soon as you can,do a disappearing act. If anybody asks you the next day.just look at then, surprised, and say Didn't you see me,I was there ,just ask so ans so,I was talking to them all night!!! Got to be sly as a fox! Good luck! ( I know how you feel,I hated my bosses, and tried to get out of parties like that,as much as I could)
