Are you hiding gender and age in your profile?

Hello myLotters,
Why people are hiding gender and age in their profile? I there a reason behind? Mostly people in social sites will never give out their original names. That is acceptable and fine. But I am curious to know why people are hiding their gender and age.
Also I could see that most of the people are open and not hiding. myLot is a great site and it doesn't reveals any personal information to anyone. The reason why I am asking this is, while adding a a new friend I just need to know the gender and age and it might be good to have a conversation if I am comfortable.
Will it be uncomfortable for a person thinking that other friend can bother him? If it is so, he can remove that one from his list...
Your thoughts please ....

i guess for some reasons why they hide some of their identity and that its themselves knew why they do. what if they would ask too, why, if we talk, it is really important to know my real age and gender? that statement is just nothing, i am just kidding to you but i know you can answer that on your own
thanks for the opportunity :)))

It is not anything paticular about the discussion but just curious to know. Even in yahoo chats which I have done(not now) the first thing they ask is "your asl please...", Hope you have received that too when you go on a public chat....

I plead half guilty. My age is hidden. It wasn't at first but every time I went in my profile there it was staring at me - 64 - and it looks so old. I got tired of seeing it. That's why I hid it. But I've mentioned my age in many of my posts where it seems relevant. I wasn't thinking about it mattering to other people. I just didn't like seeing it.

One valid point indeed. Seeing our age makes us to think the time we lost. I do agree but the profile of yours is seen by many and not only you right?

You are correct. But, like watchamacallitz (below) I don't base my friendships on age or gender. At this point in time I just can't think about my age. It's depressing. But I thank you for commenting! Comments these days are getting scarce and I do appreciate it.

Indeed there is nothing sociable about hiding age and gender - unless these people have another agenda
I am wary of those who send a friend request and the vital information is missing. How can anyone befriend someone if they don't know even the basics about them?
Mine are there for one and all to see, even though some of the youngsters appear to think that anyone over 23 is faking their age and that internet could not possibly be for grandmas

Ha really mysD. Sometimes it is true. Even I too have thought once that how can some of the old persons can make their most of the day here.
Later realised my faults... From this discussion, hope most of us are not intended to think like the one you said... Internet could be and should be for grandpas and grandmas.
Just curious why you've mentioned anyone over 23? Are they adult or old?

Go back to when you were 23.
Didn't everyone older than you seem ancient then?

Well, I Mylot over, in every site that I checked in, I have always given real data related to age, gender, citizenship and more.
Do you think that I am registered on Facebook with my real name.
I do not even understand the reason why many people want to conceal this kind of data. Well, maybe they have a guilty conscience? Or do not want to be recognized?
Well, frankly speaking I do not understand. However, many sites including the same Mylot, they give you the opportunity to not fill the fields inherent precisely at this sensitive data.

about you no problem. you post all details about you, family, unemployment etc. in detail and it is to be appreciated.
You have given as follows:
"Do you think that I am registered on Facebook with my real name."
have you given another name?
yes. in mylot itself we can have a different name and that is why i have not given my name. in fact sometimes a discussion was there how mylot id was framed and I explained the reasons therefor.
People will not give inofmation if it is not made mandatory.

Alberello,
Well some people may not want to be identified in any form of data I guess. But in facebook it is not advisible to provide the real info on a person. I really gues that some people think that their personal info might be used in wrong form by the site administrators or might be taken by some intruders I never know. Well I personally give what is needed and what is not needed. If the site is supisious I never join.

Philip shiny:
It is a good point. People are not revealing their age and gender because it is allowed by the website. If the website insists gender and age should be given those who do not want to reveal the right one may give the wrong information.
Those who have not given are doing a good thing in one way --they are not giving wrong information.
In fact it can be made compulsory to give these details but many may not be willing to.
I have given all my details correctly so much so some members do feel I am telling more than what is to be told. In as much as I have not hidden agenda i have not problem in giving correct information.
Correspondingly those who have not given all the details are not people with hidden agenda but that is way of thinking and it is permissible in the forum.

Hi Ravisivan,
You are optimistic in the way you think and on your writing I hope. I like the one which you have written "they are not giving wrong information."
In some way it could help for peaceful means like website information can be shared and like the one you have about the banking exam details, It is really useful and it not from a youngster I hope as you may have some knowledge and experience in that field I hope. But if you have not given your correct info on your age and gender I might have doubted. But it helps in most ways but I don't have any cons on these info sharing of age and gender.
Cheers ... Nice day always...

as for me i don't hide gender or age here, but i just don't reveal the real name or any pictures. there are limitations, mylot can be a great site but also we tend to share and open up more about ourselves and our lives to get opinion or advice from other people on mylot and also this can be tagged and appear on search engines that can be visible and accesible to everyone and anyone. some things can be kept private and anonymous and if we reveal all true and real information, this can be so open to anyone. for me i am just not comfortable. maybe i can reveal more when i get to know the person or friend better and know that they are true and can be really be trusted...but not to the whole wide world.

Hi jadoixa,
You have a valid point though. Revealing more to persons who are true and can be trusted is a point worth a million in this discussion. Thanks for letting us know your thoughts on this myLot about how and why we are revealing more esp., in here.

I do not think I am hiding anything. I may have changed stuff on my profile in recent years. Sometimes I tell more in my posts than I do in my profile. If people like me enough to follow my posts they will learn a lot about me.

Hi Janey,
I am not sure whether or not my age is showing now, but many moons ago, I heard that identity thieves can use your date of birth to well... steal your identity so I stopped showing my D.O.B on public sites. I noticed that some other users of these sites (I can't remember which one) showed themselves as being well in their 90s. I was amused by this. I tend to use my real name though. In business, I used to have business cards with name, address, phone number. And whenever I issed a cheque (remember those? ) I was giving my bank details too! ID theft is a chance you take I guess in business - no point in going incognito! It would like come into my store and buy my wares, but don't look at me, or know anything about me! It jus wouldn't work! _Derek

Hello derek_a,
No worries about the name. Glad you have shared your information about the steal using DOB. I too agree that DOB must be hidden in social sites but I guess the age is just a number and what there to hide in this?

Well, I'm not hiding mine personally. I am 21 year old female, hear me roar! But there are some places where I'd prefer to keep my age private, sometimes just cause I'm afraid of what people will think of me when they know how young or alternatively how OLD I am. Apparently 21 year olds shouldn't get excited about Disney Fairy movies... who knew!
It's really a matter of where I'm particularly comfortable, and I'm pretty comfortable sharing some pretty personal or potentially embarrassing information on mylot. But there are other sites, usually just ones I'm passing through, where I'd prefer to keep my mask of anonymity. Or maybe I'm just starting out and I don't know the community that well and I'm just not comfortable there yet.
I don't particularly feel like I need to know the age and gender of everyone I'm talking to, so I don't really fault anyone if they choose to hide theirs. Though I admit, I do get curious.

Now you've got me thinking about all of the age and gender anonymous people I've met online. Like they're just some ageless, genderless entities wandering the web... playing fantasy roleplaying games and exchanging fan-fiction..

Since myLot has given that option one should accept it. When a topic is posted or a response is given age or gender matters little.

Gender is not hidden , it is their , it is important to be displayed in profile , so readers will know who is responding , and can compare views from different genras.
Age is hidden for some issues might be sensitive , a reader may not understand the writer. I guess privacy must be observed all the time , hence you're communicating to the globe.

Hello Angelpink,
You are right. Age must be hidden while compared to gender. Gender has some social importance when concerned on a social discussion right?
Great suggestion. Thanks. Have a great day always...

hey PHILLIP,
I have seen many people too hiding their age i think it is mainly because some people do not want to look old. Some don't want to give impression that they are old boring mature people. I personally believe age reflects a thought in other person's mind like if some one is

Interesting indeed. Now I am getting new responses on how the age matters even on discussion sites. I don't think so much in getting friends who were more than 40. Indeed I have more good friends in that age criteria. And the last part you mentioned is that to be taken more immportantly and true that people don't want to show their age even if the discussion involves about age and gender.
nice and valid point. Thanks...Cheers

I see no benefit in hiding one's age or gender, although I have no problem with anyone who chooses not to display such information. I suppose some people may have good reason for this despite the fact that it is not obvious to me.
I am an old man of 63 living in the United Kingdom, so trying to keep such information private seems to serve no purpose whatsoever. After all, I will not get any younger whether I admit the fact or not.
I suppose the fact that the option to hide such data may give the impression that it is prudent and therefore encourage some people to do so.

Nice to hear your open voice on your opinion. Curious that you have told that some have good reason for this despite. I cannot get that. But had a doubt on their reason. It also depends upon the site you share I guess.

Well phillip it is hard to say why people do not like to share their gender or age in social networking sites. In my lot all we bother is about the starting a discussion or answering others discussions, so, I hardly care to whom I am discussing with. But in social networking sites I wonder why many hide their true identity. My guesses might be many which might not be correct. But I do not like my date of birth be shared with my virtual unknown friends. I do not mind in sharing with the person I meet around or I know them in person. So, that is why I do not like to share my DOB but I have no problem is sharing my name or my gender.

The point you have specified about the DOB is perfect. I too even hide my DOB on social sites but not in myLot as it only asks for age and not DOB right?

I am not hiding my gender and age. I don't see any reason why I should hide them in the first place. It's not gender discrimination here in MyLot is rampant.
I don't know for others though, why they would hide any information like that when what is necessary to hide is one's name to maintain a good privacy. I also don't think that others knowing one's gender and age is a breach of one's security/privacy. Seriously, I don't know.
