When ever I took a break time from my work as well as at home from my computer, I used to put it either in "sleep" or "hibernate" mode since I will return after few minutes. One time my wife asked me if she turn the computer off or just place in "sleep" mode. I answered, hibernate instead of sleep. She asked me what are the difference between the two since both will just temporarily shut off. I am not atechi person so I just said "I don't know." I just want to inquire some techie persons here in mylot what are the difference between hibernate and sleep mode. Furthermore, what will be be best option to temporarily shut off the computer betweenthe two mode? Good day!

I used to be confused but I understand it by now. The key is : hibernate still needs power but sleep doesn't.

Yes it sill save you energy if you turn your computer off when leaving but according to some engineers, turning on any electrical device will use up to 7 times energy thru the energy surge which makes you consume the amount of energy you saved for that few minutes. I guess it is better to put it on hibernate mode instead.

Hi, Both mode still use power to certain extent. Hibernation mode uses lesser power, lik eits being turned off but ready to be turned on again without the usual startup procedure of rebooting the system. I use neither mode. When I leave the workstation for more than an hour, say on a lunch break, I would turn it off, system unit, monitor, peripherals and UPS unplugged, to save power. It is only a matter of a few seconds to reboot and start working again, that is if your system has a high rating in terms of processor speed and RAM size.

Sleep and Hibernation are both power-saving state of computers usually used when the user temporarily does not use the computer. However, hibernation is designed for laptops. Here's the techie explanation: Sleep quickly resumes all operation at full power once the computer is going to be used again. This usually only takes seconds. This process is similar to when you are watching tapes/CD/DVD movies that you pause for a while then resumes when you want to continue. Hibernation is similar to sleep but the process is this: Hibernation puts all open files and programs you have on your hard disk and then turns of the computer. This user lesser power compared to sleep. Therefore: Sleep mode means that you only want the laptop to be temporarily "off" only for a few hours. While Hibernation is if you cannot use your laptop for a long period of time--If you wish to still resume your work afterwards and that you don't have the chance to charge your laptop with power anytime soon. Hope this helps! For more info you can just refer here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Sleep-and-hibernation-frequently-asked-questions The link above is not a referral link.

So better to use hibernate mode when I am going away for few hours to save my battery. Thanks for that great information.

No problem. I used to have the same problem determining the difference between the two as well. Besides, I have to know these things because of my chosen course. Searching things out on the net really does help a lot as well.

I am not teki as well. My daughter said that that is literal. Sleep means a few hours, hibernate is like a bear's. LOL. I hope I helped. Let's wait for the sound responses. Sigh.

When you put your laptop in sleep mode laptop is still in running mode only display is off and your all program going to be closed. So after couples of hours your battery of laptop will go down But, when you put your laptop in hibernet mode then at that time your computer will going off and your all program state will be saved on harddisk and it will not consume battery.

Maybe this is the reason why my computer/laptop still consumes power even I put them in hibernate or sleep mode. Sometimes I was surprised that my battery went low when I used to put either sleep or hibernate overnight. I just thought that putting the laptop in either state will make it turn off and will not consume pwer at all. Now I really understand. Thanks.
