Making extra money or saving more money?

September 30, 2012 11:35am CST
So far I think I am earning the maximum I can considering the economic climate where I live. I have a part time job That is 8-16 hours a week and to save money I also do Avon and make some sculptures and jewellery from polymer clay to save on Christmas presents and birthday costs. I also try to be realm stringent and take a really good look at super market prices so that I can get a good deal. Does anyone else have any good hints for stretching their budget further?

I borrow this from Shopaholic: MMM and CBE - Make more money and Cut back on expenses. Either two will do, but together will really stretch your budget further. I can suggest on CBE - if you can share expenses with others, do it - like carpooling. Reuse, recycle - not only saves you money, but the environment, too. Reduce spending (well you already do that) - reduce other expenses like light - switch off lights not in use, unplug all appliances not in use, etc.

Car pooling is a really good idea I have started this at work most recently and it works out really well as everyone is really friendly (:

Good that it works for you. There are a lot of nifty ideas on cutting back on expenses. All it needs is some discipline and you're good to go.

Since you are in the UK there are a lot more options out there for you. Why not use the sites that offer Amazon gift cards as rewards as well as you can swing a lot of free gifts with the right approach or even perhaps join some survey sites as I am sure the extra 20 pounds or so could help out a lot and make the budget easier to stick to etc.

I tried one site and it worked out pretty good as I got £20 worth of pay-pal but it took me a year to do it, though one that said it would give me £15 worth of amazon vouchers for all the work I did and then they never bothered their backsides sending me it. It is hard to figure out which ones are reliable was kind of annoyed with that and it put me off a little bit when they didn't pay me it. You don't happen to know any reliable ones?

There are so many ways to save money that entire books have been written about it. I don't know what you have available there, but go looking for printed material that tells you how to save on utilities and every day expenses. There are several sites online that have a lot of ideas, too, although many of them are USA specific, most of the ideas will work anywhere. Things like checking to see if you're paying too much insurance, keeping lights turned out and other appliances off when they're not needed, using less heat, shopping second hand for what you need, trying to make do or be creative with what you have... it's a never ending quest to cut a little here and a little there in many, many ways.

Yes, that's a good tactic, not just for craft supplies, but for almost everything.

Yeah it really is me and two or three other friends have also started trading DVDs and Wii games too as shops like CEX, or game or whatever ones that offer to buy your games after you use them don't really offer such a great amount of money for trading in used things.Trade and share instead of buying new stuff seems to be working at the moment.

Another thing I started doing this month is to do crafting trades with other local artists like beads, buttons, materials and books etc works out well if you have stuff you havnt looked at in a while or have too much of one thing.

Hi Chaobreeder, if you can sleep early and wake up early, that will save on electricity too. Some people tend to sleep in the wee hours of the morning, and then wake up at noon. They waste so much electricity powering the house at night. It does not matter if money is in abundant, and you do not have to think about budgeting. However, when it comes to the time when money is tight, saving on electricity is important.

Where I live it dosent work out so great as I live in the far North hemisphere, it would probably work best in the summer but in the winter we get very little light as it closes into Christmas. Wont get light properly until 10am and then gets dark around 5pm again.

I'm trying to earn extra money because I want to buy things, so I'm not really trying to save money right now.

I don't really have an urge to buy anything but Christmas and birthday presents at the moment other than the basics like food and petrol for the one car we use.

Shopping at the dollar store helps me save money.

The garage where I work does three or four packets of sweets and chocolate bars for £1 but I am largely trying to cut down on sugary things.

You are doing a lot , what you can also do try buying grocery in bulk , I found it cheaper that way . You can also buy certain things when you know price will go down , like certain clothes on sale .

I had Avon for 2 years as well, but I realised that I was spending a lot on buying their products for me so I was spensing all of my earnings in buying my own cosmetics from the company! I decided to quit because I didn't make any profit at the end of the month. You can try reviewing sites, I know a couple of them that I am also using and if you are good in reviewing you can earn a good amount every month!

I still like using Avon because of the discounts you get in the clearance, I think it is the only thing thats kept my christmas presents affordable, I only do maybe 10 houses plus friends and family have been doing it since 2009 I think and I usually get at least 1 new customer every year as I hold parties and stuff but it is a lot of work.
