E-cigarettes have nicotine?

My best bud's birthday is just around corner, and I'm thinking of giving her a present. Since she's a smoker and I'm worried about the possible harm this vice could cause to her in the future, I'm thinking of giving her an e-cigarette as a gift. But, a colleague of mine told me that e-cigarettes contain nicotine. Say what? I thought this was supposed to help you break the habit. Then, why on earth would it contain nicotine if that's the case? Could this e-stick really make you stop smoking? Enlighten me guys pls! I'm a former smoker myself but I quit through my perseverance and self-discipline. And mind you, it was not that easy. Back in the days, e-cigarettes were not yet in the market. So, I never had a chance to check this out myself.
