I would have liked to be in a car on the road that night to see it for myself.

On my way to Tulsa this past week, my dad told me a story I had never heard before. We were talking about motorcycles and how our state doesn't have a helmet law. And here is what he told me. He was around 21, and had just got married a year prior to my mom. They didn't have much, so he rode a motorcycle because it was cheaper than a car, and didn't use as much gas. One late night he was driving and the bugs were just hitting him in the head and face, over and over again. He wasn't wearing a helmet and had no kind of glasses. So when he stopped to fill up his motorcycle with gas (only having enough to spend on gas itself) he asked the cashier for a brown paper bag. He proceeded to cut two circles our of the bag for eye holes, got back on his bike, and with one hand steered the motorcycle while the other hand held the paper bag over his face.
Can you imagine?

That must've been a rough ride home, glad he made it okay and nothing happened to him. I never been in a situation like that because where we live we have to wear helmets. Maybe you're dad should buy a helmet if he still rides motorcycles it's always safe to wear one even though your state doesn't require it. It will save him from any accidents in the near future.

Funny story. LOL.
My parents don't tell me their stories in a general way. But I remenber a funny thing what have happened between my dad and me several years ago. I was riding on a motorcycle that been steered by my dad. When we went through a downgrade with a lake beside, the front-wheel of the motorcycle collided a stone then we fell down from the motorcycle and I was almost fell into the lake.

Wow! That was dangerous only using the one hand. Hope it helped with the bugs. Bugs can really sting a person. I hope he was able to get a helmet later.

That is a shame. Hopefully he was able to get a helmet at some point.

Haha! What a visual! Can you imagine passing him and wondering what in the world was going on? Now a fellow rider would probably know exactly what was happening and would laugh but it might actually scare other people! lol

That's very funny. And how very creative of him. I wonder if any cars passed him or what the people inside those cars must have thought. It probably would have startled me. It's nice to hear stories like that from your parents. Maybe you should start writing these things down, kind of like a collection of stories. It would be interesting for you to read in say, 20-30 years.

Hi..I could not imagine for that ever happening..I'm very glad that your Dad was okay and brave for only using his one hand to maneuver the motorcyle. He could have been in serious trouble if there had been an helmet law back in your dad's time; or he could have seriously hurt himself..
We all learn from our experiences and am so relief that now he's just telling the story..I don't think he would really liked to have relived that experience again..
I give credit for your dad when he was twenty-one for his creativity. Thank you for sharing your Dad's story here on MyLot..

What would we think if we saw him riding down the road like that?!

Someone today would think he was dangerous or trying to be a spook or something. It is pretty innovative. I worry about people who only drive with one hand. Hubby is one as well. Your dad might appear to be an early Halloween reveler.

My dad talks to me more now than he ever did when I was younger. He is eighty now, and I am older than your parents. I do remember spending a lot of time with him though. Probably things he does not remember, but they meant a lot to me, I guess. Like letting me try to use a screwdriver, when I was about five years old or less.

It is hard to imagine riding a motorbike like that. It is very dangerous if the traffic is busy. When I was a teen, I used to be able to ride my bike with my hands off the bike and I could ride it well for some meters. I could balance my bike quite well, but not now. I won't risk riding it that way any more as I am not young any more. lol. Have a good day.

Haha I seriously cant even imagine what the drivers on the road who saw him thought. At least this way he was able to keep the bugs out of his eyes and nose. So gross. It can hurt quite bad to if your going fast and the bugs are slapping into your skin. I would have been worried about driving one handed.

The more I hear about your dad, the more I can imagine him doing something like this; how inventive he is... So did he buy a helmet after that?

see, helmets are for more than just safety.
It reminded me of that scene in Wild Hogs where the guy is being hit by bugs and even has some in his teeth, then the other guy gets hit in the face with a crow.

That was a dangerous thing to do because, you never know what traffic will be coming from the opposite side,if there is a careless driver coming from the opposite direction, he would have certainly met with an accident. He should use a helmet because,if he had enough money to buy a motor cycle,he can spare a little more and buy a helmet.Spending a little more to protect your life is a must.

It was a used motorcycle and not a new one. And no, he couldn't afford a helmet. He only got that because he couldn't afford an actual car. Plus, this happened decades ago and the point is that it is a funny story. Not an indictment on helmet laws. Which our state does not have in the first place.

Sometimes things happen that need to be addressed and he did the only thing he could think of. It might have been more dangerous for him without the bag, as if he got hit in the eyes at the same time, he would not have been able to see, but it would have been a sight to see.

I never heard of that before, it was an ingenious solution, however, it was also dangerous, he could have gotten into an accident, or the police could have stopped him because he looked like a bandit.

We can become very inventive when money is in short supply. Kudos to your Dad. I would have liked to have seen this as I cannot imagine if I would be scared or amused. Blessings

ROFLOL! That is hilarious! And maybe even a little bit scary! How awful though to be out in the open getting hit by bugs (yuck!) as it would also be painful at high speed.

hahaha, this is too funny!! I couldn't imagine being on the bike and getting smacked in the face with bugs! Oh how gross that must have been to get cleaned up! Helmets & eye protection are so important when riding a bike, everyone should wear them even if there isn't a law for them where you live! I'm glad your dad didn't get hurt and was able to share this comical story with you, and then for you to share it with us!
