What will you do to deal with your laptop when it says Fan Error and won't open?

I have an IBM ThinkPad T43. It is around eight years old. So far, the only problem existing is the FAN. These days, when it is switched on, it shows Fan Error on the screen and then it switches off automatically.
Half a year ago, the same case started to appear and later it worked again. Now this kind of problem of Fan Error is appearing again.
I am wondering whether I should get it repaired in a computer-repairing shop or keep on doing the same thing again by constantly switching it on or not.
So my question is: What will you do in my case, to have it repaired or keep on trying switching it on till it works?
Thanks very much for your advice and response in advance.

Hello my friend williamjisir Ji,
Well, I am not talking as an computer hardware genius, but trying to find out. As far as FAN is concerned, it keeps temerature to required normal operating temeperature of any appeartus. As fan may not be working, it will increase temeperature of inside the item and it may become dangerous for its proper functioning. So with your experience, you may take risk to switch On for a limited period. I think controling switch is mal-functioning and it is required to be changed. But going for its repair may cost lime and money. But it is advisable to consult computer Doctor.
May God bless You and have a great time

Hello friend. After I responded to your response this morning, I took my IBM laptop to a computer shop for the replacing of it. The computer guy checked it and told me that it absolutely needs to have another fan, which would cost me 30 US Dollars. He told me to go and get it tomorrow when he has received the fan he is going to book online. I left my phone number to him and I am looking forward to getting it tomorrow. Thank you so much for your consideration, my dear mgbu. Have a great day.

Hello my friend williamjisir Ji,
Well, my hubby has totally a different approach and attitude for such things, he is an retired Electrical Enineer fron Air force. He says, nothing wrong with fan, only it's controlling switch/circuit and first doubt goes to its swiching on automatically. Further, keeping my advise reserved, i will not go as per responder No.5 as he is a retired Professor, known only foir theories in the class-room, my hubby is practical, who made both brief cases with 3 screws at the cost of 1 $, when we were returning to India from US. Else my son was ready to purcase new Brief cases. My hubby's concept is to make repairs if possible, where cost should not be more than its actual value. Also he thinks, what if we get sick, throw us in dust-bin and buy new parents.
May God bless You and have a great time

Hi friend
If you have funds buy a new one, i mean latest model with new features
If you don't like to spend much, get the fan replaced at any shop.
If you don't want to spend, just switch off, use when it cools.
Have you retired or still in teaching?
Bhuwan.

Hello Professor. It is the second choice I made today and hope I will get it back tomorrow.
Right now I am still working and will have to work at least till I am sixty years old. That is to say, there is still eleven years to go before I can get retired and get my pension. By the way, it has been discussed a lot online that the government is gradually adopting the policy of delaying our retirement age till around sixty-five. So that's why I say at least I will have to wait till I am sixty. I guess I will have to probably work to sixty-five if health condition permits by then. Enjoy your life, Professor.

Right now in China, it is 60 years of age for teachers. ^60 is a good age to retire, but after 60, if you are still needed, the school will still invite you to teach. So it is with some other occupations.

Your laptop already had good quality because at least it has run for eight years Although today the laptop is less expensive and you can buy a new one with less money. But it seems it is still a waste because you have an IBM laptop anyway If I were you, I may go to get it fixed and I think it will not cost so much.

Hello youless. I got another fan for the IBM laptop and now it is working without the previous problem. I hope this fan will last as long as possible. Otherwise I will have to consider buying a new one. By the way, it cost me 180RMB for the fan. Thank you for the response. Take care.

Hi my friend, this is really an old model but because IBM makes quality laptop it was able to last this long.. It is sure durable and strong. I like this type of laptop also, i do have this 2 years ago but now replace it with something new.
About your problem, because of its age(old), it has come to a stage where it would show hardware problem and errors. This is what we called as lifespan range of a computer. You're problem is basically the fan cooling assembly, I think you need to replace this., You can have it repair to an computer expert or buy the cooling fan assembly. I don't really know where you can buy it, maybe you can ask second hand computer stores or stores that have old stocks or old model laptops. Or maybe you can ask IBM support for this..
Curious about the problem, i search the net and found a tutorial site stating how to replace the cooling fan assembly.. here is the link: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-cooling-fan-ibm-thinkpad-t43-laptop/
Hope this help.. --Happy Mylotting--

Hello pals. This is indeed an old IBM type. I love it so much and would like to keep on using it. Now it seems to be working again after my wife used a hair drier to blow off the dust. Isn't it gorgeous! Thanks very much for the detailed response with some useful information. Have a great day, friend.

WOw..thats great news!!! .. Your wife is sure is lucky to get it working again..hehehe
But then again, I'm sure eventually stop working because of its age, it would be able to cope up with the changes in the technology.. your last option should have to replace it with something new..its a reality my friend. I guess you need money now for it..savings for future use if this laptop would come to its lifespan.

This may be related to a faulty cooling system or fan. With this kind of error, I strongly recommend you to contact your manufacturer. They may be able to refer you to a Service Centre who can assess this.

Hello chiwasaki. That fan is now replaced with another one. I paid some money to get it replaced in a computer shop and now it works. I wish it to last as long as possible before I have to get a new computer. At least I hope it will last one year. Thanks for the response, friend. Have a good day.

Hi,
You have very nice IBM there, eight years and still running, and it is complains of a very simple problem: its internal fan may have lots of dust in its blades or the motor may have seized and cannot do its primary function which is to cool down the whole system. Times like that, the automatic temperature sensor on the CPU kicks in and shuts it down to prevent further damage due to overheating. It could actually melt the circuits if forced to operate without the cooler.
We call the phenomenon "thermal error" and it can be corrected by cleaning the fan blades, checking if the fan still functions, freeing the whole internal mechanism of dust that hamper airflow. It should be done by a competent technician trained to disassemble mobile systems. The assembly is quite tricky to dismantle and clean, some parts break easily if mishandled, one wrong turn of a screwdriver and everything is screwed up.
One reason I stick to desktops. They're relatively easy to assemble, repair and maintain. Cost less for the higher specs and performance too.

Hi rog. Thanks so much for the detailed response, from which I have learned a lot. We have a Dell laptop with the same problem last year. It was bought in 2005. Last year, my son helped open the back cover trying to clear the dust, but in vein. What was worse, something was ruined and we had to take it to get repaired and it cost us a lot. I am going to let him try it again, but will tell him to be more careful with it if he is willing to have a try. Thanks again, rog. Have a great day!

What rog0322 said is true. Actually the problem is easy to do but the trick is on the disassemble and reassemble the it. You must try to open it slowly and never force to open it. Usually, for the fan section, you can open from the back of the laptop to get access to it. Consider the battery, and check if you have to remove the cd player first. Be gentle when removing the cover. I suggest you to video tape when you open it so that you can check back the step by step (reverse) when reassembling it. Note that, you might have some screws balance.
