Sri Lanka setting bad examples in world cricket

The switching of captains by Sri Lanka for the Monday game against England is totally against the spirit of the game. By not having Mahela Jayawardene is the official captain, they are setting the wrong example just to be able to play a match. That feels so cheap. And do you remember the Suraj Randiv incident when he disallowed Sehwag a century - a deserving century. Common Lankans, grow up and show some spirit.

This tournament has been going on in SL ,so obviously they want to win this one badly.Record of SL is has been poor in finals, and ban on Mahela would have made things worse. In professional sports spirit of the game has lesser importance than success.

There is no doubt that the hosts, especially would like to win a major tournament like a World Cup, whichever sport and wherever be it held. But the tactics used are certainly not good. They are setting such examples for the generations to come. And that is really a sign of concern. It is not expected from any senior players in any sport.

It is very clear that Sri Lanka has made a mockery of ICC rules and regulations. Now it is for ICC to see it in that spirit and take action against them. Only last year they were awarded the spirit of cricket award by ICC. So now this all comes up for questioning and I think ICC should take stringent action against Sri Lanka, but knowing ICC they will do nothing. Cheers! Ram

I don't know if I should say it is a mockery of the rules or not. Because, in the first place, there does not exist such a rule. That is the opportunity the home team has taken. But yes, the ICC will most certainly be reviewing this rule first as they have come hard on the runner rule. But having got the spirit of the game award, Sri Lanka did not deserve any such thing and that too in a World Cup. No way.

What ever if Sri Lanka again are slow in finishing the innings then match referee will call Mahela only. Because on paper he is the captain of the side and ban will be imposed if anything goes wrong with over rates. Anyhow, when ICC match referee of the match, umpires and opponent captain feels alright then there is no point in we feeling bad about it. If Cricket rules say on cannot switch the captain then it is against the spirit of the game but as I said match referee would have known about this change.

If we go according to your theory of the referee calling Mahela, then what's the point in saying that Kumar Sangakkara is the captain. If the same mistake gets repeated and Mahela has to face the hit, then why would the Sri Lankan think tank make Kumar the captain for the England match the captain in the first place? I don't think the referee would have called anyone else but Kumar had the same thing taken place once again. Well, that's my interpretation. And we can easily disagree on this point.

They did this to save him from one match ban implemented on him for the slow over rate in the previous match. I think ICC would make a change in the rules so no one would misuse the rules. As per as not playing with the spirit there are many players currently playing does not play with the spirit of game. The Suraj Randiv incident with sehwag was never acceptable.

when sanga walked out for the toss I was mildly surprised.when he joked that mahela was not captaining cuz he was losing those tosses i was amused.when a commentator bought up that mahela will be banned if he goes overtime again i was shocked.mahela will send sanga to the toss as a captain to save himself from the ban but acts like the captain on the field? He was the one asking for a change of ball for kulasekara during the final over.reminds me of some political leaders whose party won elections but the cannot become the official ruler due to certain isues so keep a very loyal guy as a dummy but he makes all the decisions for the dummy ruler thereby ruling the government and people indirectly.setting some very bad precent there sri lanka.wish somebody take some action against them.

Yes, it was really surprising to see the developments from that match till now. Not needing too much explanation, I would say only one thing - that is the poorest show did by the Sri Lankans who have a rich history of players like Arjun Ranatunga and Arvinda. The players who were involved in captain switching have brought the respect down for sure.
