Hello aegina and welcome to myLot. Here in my country lentils are considered part of the legume family in other wards they are a bean of sorts. You are right in that once they produce their seed the plant does die and needs to be planted again the next year. When you speak of spices think of things like cinnamon, ginger and so forth. Lentils are full meal food. They can be planted in early spring during the cool time od the year. You don't say where you are so it is difficult to say when to plant the lentils. They like cool weather. and are drought tolerant. Here is a web site that explains about growing lentils. It also has a link on how to cook them. http://www.ehow.com/how_8242157_grow-black-lentils.html

That spice is not used in my country, unless it has a different name. I do plant some herbs and spices in my garden to add flavour to my food. I have oregano, peppers (sweet and hot,) rosemary, garlic, several kinds of onions and chives. They are easy to grow and they are awesome.
