Since 2005 Mother's Day and Father's Day that has been added to the national festival of grandparents. The date was yesterday, October 2. A note of the Auser (a voluntary association and social promotion, aimed at enhancing the elderly, and enhance their role in society) explains how the law establishing the holiday was introduced to enhance and recognize the role of grandparents in families and society in general. In fact, grandparents are increasingly essential in assisting and supporting parents in the daily and growth of children, helping both affective in both economic well-being of the family. The choice of the day to celebrate the grandparents, October 2, is linked to the celebration in the Catholic Church of the Guardian Angels, assimilable to grandparents who protect and watch over their grandchildren.

nice to know about celebration of October 2 as a day celebration of role or grand parents. In India also october 2nd is a holiday on account of Mahatma Gandhi's birth day. Have you heard about Mahatma Gandhi? I am giving a link that will tell a few points about gandhiji who is also called the Father of india. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohandas_Karamchand_Gandhi I am sure you must have heard about this great personality who fought for the freedom of India adopting Satyagraha -- non violence methods.

When I heard for the first time of the great Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, I was in elementary school. I remember my teacher pointed out the phrase, "Gandhi non-violence." No doubt a great historical figure and Indian philosopher. Just read from your link that Gandhi was born October 2, 1869. So every year on this date, he being recognized as "the father of the nation" in India is an official holiday.

Yes. october 2 is important day for India. Many people have come and gone after Mahatma Gandhi and it is really difficult to find a parallel to such a great personality. Even his relatives have not had s smooth life. they have been put into lot of difficulties. I appreciate you for being positive and to fight for survival and living. How I wish alberello will get a good job which keeps him engaged through the day and he also gets paid well so that he can take care of him and his parents well.

We have a grandparents day in England. I think it is in September . We as a family don't really take much notice of it, but I do think it is a good idea.

Well, perhaps just in England, the holiday you have a much longer time than us Italians. From what you were able to read in my thread, in Italy this celebration is in vogue only from the year 2005

that's nice , never heard of celebrating grandparents say. This means grand parents are only remembered on that day? is it? what about the rest of the days. I feel if we look after them well, and maintain good relations ,everyday is a celebration for them in that age . we don't celebrate any grand parents day , at least i didn't hear about that till now, but may be in few years we are going to follow that soon, because, here in our country grandparents stay with us , i mean with their children and grandchildren, but as the days are changing the nuclear families are increasing day by day, and the aged parents are left alone, so slowly old age homes are also increasing , we are loosing our tradition and culture.
