If you're reading this you probably follow politics, and if you follow U.S. politics you probably have heard that GOP Presidential nominee Willard "Mitt" Romney is reportedly planning to use some "zingers" during tonight's debate and that he's actually been practicing them on staffers since August. As you probably know, Mitt's already used some zingers during the Republican debates; his challenge of a $10,000 bet to Rick Perry comes to mind.
There have been several VERY memorable zingers during past debates such as Ronald Reagan's famous "There they go again" and Ross Perot's running mate's "Who am I? Why am I here?" question.
MY question tonight is who will ultimately get in the most zingers, will they be good or bad and will they have any real impact on the election? Actually, since the debate is set to begin in 12 minutes or so I'll be interested in reading both any predictions any of you get posted in time and your opinions during and/or after the debate is over.
PLEASE let's keep this particular discussion somewhat lighthearted and civil...lol!

I am agree not to many zingers. the Debate was weak the moderator was weak and Obama was weak. I thought overall debate was poorly done. They let Romney get away with anything he wanted that being the President and moderator.

Obama spoke for five full minutes more than Romney. So Romney didn't bully the moderator here. What you did notice was that Romney showed leadership and confidence and was masterful in handling the moderator, whereas Obama was whiny ('I had five seconds left before you interrupted me'.
There were not many zingers but there were some excellent lines - all delivered by Romney. Can you name two?

I was more or less talking about rudeness there was a difference between the way Obama conducted himself toward the moderator when he went over time and the way Romney did. Just to give you and a example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oWmGDsbq3o
There was others but This is all I could find for now. I actually thought this was one of the better times for the moderator as he did not let Romney push him around to bad and eventually putting Romney in his place. There were other times he just let Romney go probably because he was tired of fighting with him.

Overall I did not see a lot of zingers. Not impressed by the debate at all.

I agree, I have to give the slight edge to Romney as much as I hate to say it. I thought the whole format was kind of weak. I do not know if it was just because the moderator let Romney dictate his his own rules. I know Obama did it a couple of times but at least he was more respectful about it.
Romney was real aggressive and the President was just to passive. I can see why Romney is a good sales man as he can makes people believe anything he says. He policies have seem to shifted again and Obama let him get away with it. At the end of the day Romney may have won this one, but I do not believe most of what he says and he kind of just reminded me of a bully the way he walked all over that moderator.
Obama on the other hand, just need to come a lot harder than that. I was really disappointed in his passive attitude tonight. Obama should of challenged Romney to be more factual. I would like to see Romney back up everything he said tonight so he did not win in that regard in my opinion. Of course everyone keeps letting Romney get away with it, so it may not matter.

@crossbones - Obama has no facts or specific answers but you believe him utterly and Romney gives you facts but you want him to prove them? Well, I suppose you can't "prove" catch-phrases and slogans, so there's no point in asking Obama to prove anything he said.
@lilwonders - Romney had several wonderful lines that I think will be remembered from this debate. One was the borrowing from China test to decide which programs are essential. He didn't have zingers, he had some solid and specific answers which is why all polls show him winning this debate by a wide margin.

And Romney did? To me he just changed his policies again to suit the setting.

Light and civil And talk about this race? That is a zinger in itself, lol! Mitt has to something. Unlike McCain and Dole before him had great senses of humor. True the suits that ran their campaign for some reason kept it hidden. They lose and that's when I find out they have great senses of humor. It made me say Where was that during the campaign? So Mitt better rehearse A lot. He seems to be a puppet. Or a desperate guy who will say Anything to get support. Obama Has a sense of humor. It is dry and witty. Poor Mitt.

You're right, that sure IS a zinger, isn't it? I totally agree about Dole and McCain and I'll also say while I couldn't imagine myself ever voting for either one of them I believe they're both good men who know what they stand for. I think Willard Mitt Romney is the definition of an empty suit. I think he's missing the "humanity" gene...lol!

All Obama could do was harp on the $5 trillion tax thing that Romney said repeatedly was not his plan and that a the fact checker on the station I watch said was false; in other words that Obama was wrong about. There really weren't a lot of zingers which for the most part was not what people wanted anyway. The news section of a financial site, it has the stock indexes and stuff, had a poll that said Romney won with about 70% to Obama's 30%. Romney enumerated his points and counterpoints while Obama just talked generalities and ran over his time which the moderator kept letting do.

Actually, Romney's tax cut would be around $4.8 trillion according to some so I guess it really isn't $5 trillion, right...lol? What station were you watching which said the President was wrong? I'm going to go WAAYYY out on a limb and guess it was Fox...
I agree most people didn't want "zingers" but it was the Romney campaign that leaked the information he'd been rehearsing them since August.

I think you have to question why a campaign releases a story about having practiced zingers to use during the debate. I know we are post-debate now, but this was my opinion prior to the debate. I thought it was misdirection and disinformation designed to make the Obama camp expect zingers.
In retrospect, I think I was right and I think it worked. Obama seemed to expect zingers and talking points but instead Romney came fully prepared with specific answers loaded with numbers, data, etc. I think they prepared Obama for a totally different debate and he was utterly lost. Part of that was also preparing Obama with talking points that weren't necessarily germane to the questions or Romney's answers.
It showed especially when Obama kept accusing Romney of not being specific after Romney had given a very specific answer. They prepared him with talking points.
I think, overall, it was a good opportunity for Romney to show people he is who he says he is and not who the opposition keeps telling people he is. Perhaps he waited too long to do that, but sometimes, it's better to sprint at the end than to waste all your breath countering attacks for the long stretches and being worn out by the end. I think strategy was key, here. There was no point to giving specifics before, it would have given the opposition time to spin them into unrecognizable talking points.
As for who won the debate: I think Bill Maher said it best when he tweeted that Obama looks like he DOES need a teleprompter.

I also questioned why they'd release such a story and I tend to agree with your assessment but I don't agree that it was "right", although I suppose all is fair in love, war...and especially politics, right?
I'm not going to defend President Obama's performance; I agree it wasn't his best performance and that's a huge understatement. I found it quite frustrating to watch, to be honest. However, I sure don't think anyone can assume they finally saw who Romney really is. I don't think anyone will ever really know what he stands for because he doesn't REALLY stand for anything, he just becomes whatever he thinks he needs to become at any given moment. I wonder how many of the millions who watched the debate still believe Mitt will keep the preexisting conditions clause of the health care plan intact despite the fact that his campaign spokesman came out immediately afterwards and said he'd "misspoke" on that small fact?
Obviously, if who won a debate is determined purely on style and presentation with no "points" given for substance and FACTS, Willard won, although I thought he came off looking and sounding like a used car salesman, which probably is close to who he really is except I'd trust any used car salesman more that I could ever trust him.

Funny you would make fun of the President over his use of a teleprompter, which are used by virtually ALL politicians, when it's Romney who can't say a single thing that isn't scripted without putting both feet in his mouth...lol! Just sayin...

Obama was not his usual self. He is usually a good public speaker. Or rather a good telepromter reader.

Of course I am responding after the fact. I thought the debate was pretty good (you know which way I swing). Regarding the "zingers", I guess I wasn't really looking for them. I just wanted to see what was said and how they were saying it. I truly believe that the President did not do too well. Romney was able to point out some great points and did not let Obama make untrue statements. I understand that the President still has a job to do and maybe did not have as much prep time, three days may not have been enough. Romney is in his element here. But I have to say the biggest loser was Leher. Poor guy had NO control.
