To rename a street after a living person borders on the absurd.

Recently I came to know that a politician, I am not sure who he is, had offered a suggestion to rename a street in old Delhi after Sachin Tendulkar, a living legend in the game of cricket, to honour him. To rename a street after someone who is very much alive borders on the absurd. I felt extremely surprised to see the extent to which politicians can go to garner popular support. They use the reputation of national icons to strengthen their own support. But this time it has crossed the tolerance level of people and has raised severe criticism in the media. With due respect to Sachin Tendulkar, it may be said that this is nothing more than a big joke and it has definitely put Sachin Tendulkar in an embarrassing situation. What’s your opinion in this respect?

It happens herr All the time. There are streets named after know And Loved live football players. In fact back in the day a town voted to remame the town after football legend Joe Montana! It think it is a great honor and something both parties can agree on over here. No poltician would gain any extra support but he/she would look good.

I differ with you. It is not a honour to a player and though the politician may not gain any extra support from it but he has done it to gain political advantage from people and not to honour that living legend. There are many legends in the same game of cricket who have already passed away, so he could propose to name a street after any of them. But he has done so for Tendulkar which proves that his ill motive of gaining something for himself.

If it is all about politics then it is sad. Over here All politics are set aside and the love of sport takes over. And it is an honor. A Great honor.

Didi: I support you view. We should not name streets after living persons. They may comment on the person/street bringing disgrace to the eminent person. Didi-- you know KC Das sweet shop? What is the price of a rosogolla nowadays? In 1978 I use to eat for 25p/50p small/big rosogollas. very tasty.

Hello Doctor, I am agree with you. It is not our tradition to name any street or building after a living person. But person to came in lime light do these. I read that some person construct temple of Amitabh Bachhan and in south it is common to worship of hero and heroins.

Yes it's really weird. It should be named by someone who past away and also that did something for the city, if not is specially linked to said street.

I think responsiblity of a politician is to give service to his people and for the betterment of a country. If he do something for his own interest it will be a different case. And I treat it as something that should not be imitated by many. Many they should do something more worthwhile like giving food, shelter, the basic needs of his people rather than changing names. Thanks

Hello DoctorDidi, greetings. This kind of renaming of popular places, airports, establishmnents, and many other is becoming popular to lawmakers. But this is my first time to hear that it will be renamed to a still living person. Maybe, they are just trying to get the pulse of the masses. If there will be no violent reactions from the public, it might as well be push through.

I'd agree with You on this, especially If this was being done just so that the Politician involved can claim the credit for the "award".. I'm not familiar with places being named for Celebrities who are still with us..AFAIK,having passed on seems to be a requirement,as it's then a memorial to that person,a testament to the regard they were held in..There are many awards that could be given to a Living Person to show the regard they're held in by their home town, city,or country..the street naming thing just seems more final to me,as though there's nothing more for them to achieve!

If I remember correctly, naming streets or roads after a living person has been done before. However, the motive for doing so, and the manner suggest these are being done to gain popularity using someone else's name. In this case, it is use of Sachin Tendulkar's name.

To name or rename a place, street, airport or anything depends alot on the person who has the authority to do it. Usually a place with a person's name is for in rememberance for the person for his good doing in/for that place. There could be other reasons, politicians ..yo. If the other person agrees i see no problem.
