avacado

I wanted to ask you fine mylotters how to tell if an Avacado is spoiled? I've left one in the fridge for about say 10 days. I started peeling it today as it didn't feel like mush and I see all sorts of pits in the avacado some are greyish and some are the regular color. Does this mean it's spoiled or is it still safe to eat? Or did it do this because it ripened fully in the fridge?
Can you tell I'm new to the world of avacados? Just trying a healthy fat and something new for the family to try.

I have never put avocados in the refrigerator. They don't seem to ripen well in the cold, since they're a warm climate product. The gray spots may be from the cold, I'm not sure. I've only seen brown areas in avocados that are overripe. (Those are still edible unless they're really brown.)

I didn't know how fast I'd use it so I thought it would be best to refrigerate them? I don't buy te over ripe ones I just buy te ones you have to wait a few days to ripen, especially if you cant see what they look like under their skin.

Yeah that's true. It's like waiting for a tomato to go red or a banana to be at the right ripeness for you.

I never refridgate mine, I just leave on the counter until they are a little soft on the end. But I have learned never to eat one that looks funny, they become very bitter. I don't know if it can make you sick or not. I usually buy mine at Costco but the last two times I was really fooled and had to throw out most of the package, they didn't appear ripe but when I cut them open they were hard inside and the skin just slipped right off. I was able to make some dip from them, but haven't brought anymore for a while.

Huh? I thought it just peeled off when it was ripe. I guess it could depend on how ripe. Mine were tender when they just turned ripe but pretty solid. Ones that were riper my fingers were all mushy.

My husband buys avocados at the farmers market every week, and makes the best guacamole in town. If the avocado is regular colour it's OK, but if it looks brown or grey, then it's starting to spoil.

I wish we had them at the farmers market. However, I do find them cheap enough at Aldi, usually .49-.69 ea.
I've seen some of the skins looking brownish but the avacado was still firm. Would those be spoiled or?

That is true they are rather flavorless w/o salt.

We have lots of avocado here and you can know if it already spoiled if it is
already too soft and have dark colors on it.

hi 3snugglebunnies scoop out the greyish parts and the green should be fine.lthey will ripen in the fridge but are better kept out of the fridge. they are so good and I just love to make a avocado sandwish with squished mashed avocado and a little good
mayo.

I agree with you, Hatley. I love avocados and do that when there is a gre part. But sometimes they change their taste even if they don`t change their colour. So I don`t eat those either. It`s not bad for your health, but it doesn`t taste good.

Never thought about mixing it with mayo on a sandwich. Right now I either eat it plain or mixed with salsa on chips or with my fingers.

The way you describe your avocado, I think it's already rancid. Always put in mind this: When you are in doubt, throw it away. That's what I have learned from med school. Even if your food is in the fridge and it's been there for a long time it will still get bacteria and molds. Remember that there are some strains of bacteria that can survive low temperatures.
